I just saw her in Annihilation and she graces anything she's in. Cabaret (especially this production) is my favorite and it BLOWS MY MIND that she played Sally!

Yes i fondly remember seeing this play when I first moved to NYC. I haven't missed any of Jennifer Jason Leigh's plays since. She took a lot of heat because her singing wasn't top notch but those critics missed the point - the character is not supposed to be a world class singer.

I love Jennifer's interpretation of Sally in this. Like in the original story, Sally Bowles was not a talented singer but was very charismatic with tons of demons. Jennifer played her according to the way she was written in the book I Am Camera.

Her singing had its fog-horn moments, but that was how Mr. Isherwood described Sally Bowles in the short stories. Ms. Leigh's performance seemed totally committed and brave.

Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! I saw JJL at a Saturday matinee and just thought she was phenomenal. (Yes, I know i am in the minority.) My favorite moment is when she puts her hand over her stomach as she sings, "Start by admitting from cradle to tomb...." Such a brilliant actor.

Axl, you like a lot of people seem to think Sally Bowles is meant to be played as Liza Minnelli did in the movie--insecure but a brilliant, talented performer. Christopher Isherwood, who wrote the original material "I Am a Camera" and then "Cabaret" were drawn from, thought Minnelli was brilliant indeed but totally wrong for the part. Sally Bowles as he conceived her was a desperate extrovert who wants to be in the spotlight but has absolutely minimal talent; she's someone who would never get any further in showbiz than a divey cabaret. So JJL's bad singing is, at least, faithful to the conception of the character.

With all due respect to you as a fan, and to Leigh, whose film work I respect, this is not a case of not singing top notch, this is an affront to musical performance. The whole point of the character of Sally Bowles is that she's supposed to be a supremely talented and arresting performer but also very insecure and full of demons. We know Leigh is no stranger to catharsis, but I just don't buy her as Sally. Having said that, thanks for uploading this. I was too young to see this.

She is a 3rd rate singer in a 3rd rate club. Unlike you , I actually saw her in the production multiple times and she was brilliant.

Sally Bowles was neither attractive nor talented. She had some sort of tainted charisma that kept the fans streaming into the Kit Kat Club.
