Clips from MSCS meeting to discuss Feagins' future

On Jan. 14, 2025, the Memphis-Shelby County Schools Board of Education convened an evaluation committee meeting where members discussed Superintendent’s Marie Feagins’ future with the district.The nonvoting meeting included no action by board members, as expected. Board members had almost no discussion about the future employment of the district’s leader in the meeting after Feagins read her statement of response.
In a work session later that evening, members discussed board member Amber Huett-Garcia’s proposal to keep Feagins, with both the board and superintendent agreeing to certain conditions meant to improve the strained relationships.

I think those 5 board members are up to no good. This lady came and started getting rid of jobs that needed to be gone. She was and still thinking about the children. I say let her do her job. These people want a job and is not doing anything. Thay just want a pay check. The work she is doing is good and I say let her keep her job. Sounds like to me she is cleaning house and some people are worried there dirt is going to be found.

It's amazing that these people can sleep at night. They're hurting the entire system, especially the kids... and they're actually the ones that need to be let go. If she sues, it's gonna be a long recovery. The kids are not the focus. Definitely voting certain ones out!

Unfortunately, it looks like Dr. Feagins will be terminated. I wish someone would explain what that “other thing” is that’s driving this bus to terminate Dr. Feagins.

So there's clearly some unspoken, unsettling concerns from both perspectives. There appears to be valid concerns being swept under the rug as well as positive attributes not being recognized. In the midst of it all, it's the community that suffers. If there are wrongs that can be made right, the opportunity should be given. But if there is deception that would be harmful to the future of the staff, students & the community, the right actions should be taken now. It's not about having a woman or black woman in power. It's about having the right morally sound person in this position that impact so many lives.
