This scene suggests that Murphy has some sense of continuity of his existence. The POV goes from the moment of his death through absolute darkness to being a cyborg like no time has ever passed between these events. I like how Murphy probably registered the TV but had no idea it was him on the screen, so he didn't even have a reflex of looking at it, being totally unaware of the change he underwent, deep down still thinking he's a human. @JRPGFan20000 The DVD commentary explains that better. Originally Morton was supposed to be more evil, but they made it gradual and he became "the villain that never got his chance to be evil". The engineers having their private party celebrating the completion of their project, before presenting Robo to the 'suits', and reveling in their own ingenuity and naivety as well as in the splendiforousness of their creation... for such a notoriously savage action film, this is sensitive, humanistic filmmaking. This sequence is amazingly great, perfectly shows Murphy's death and "rebirth", but also, I'd say that it does the "show don't tell" manner very well, you are given the details through Murphy's POV as he's being reconstructed into Robocop, such as when they say "lost the left arm" or when they show off the robotic arm. Perfect way of letting the audience take in what is happening on-screen. And great hint in catching the very first glimpse of Robocop on the TV as he's walking by. But also, it must have to be a very frightening thing to go through; you die, and then you "wake back up" and find yourself being rebuilt into a machine in a sort-of Frankenstein way.

Something you will not find in a movie today especially not the Remake is little moments of subtlety for example when RoboCop is aiming at Targets when he goes to pick his gun up he does the little spinning thing with the gun that Murphy did for his kid and Lewis sees him do that and that's how she recognizes its Murphy and just five seconds they were able to establish this without any dialogue it feels like subtlety like this is a dying thing

The reveal when he walks into the room behind that opaque glass and all of the other cops are like what the hell? Gives me chills each and every time. The scene is so effective. Note filmmakers, you don't need flash and pizzazz to make a scene kick ass. Sometimes understatement works to make a moment memorable.

@Tweekend277 жыл бұрын
Verhoeven wanted to make that blackout between the medics pronouncing Murphy dead and Robocop's initial bootup go for about a full minute or two, to really emphasize the slow transition from Murphy's death and rebirth but felt that audiences might not appreciate such a long silence. Watching it now, it does feel a little quick, that crossover. Would've been nice to see it Verhoeven's way or with a cursor that started blinking in the corner for like 30 seconds before Robo comes online.

When I was a kid, I was sent to bed one night while my parents' dinner party was still going on, with all the lights on and people laughing and carousing... Then, what seemed like an instant later, I woke up to go to the bathroom, and when I walked into the dark, silent hallway, I started screaming, "WHERE IS EVERYBODY?!" So, the intervals between Murphy's boot-ups seemed of perfect duration to me.

sadly, armor plating on that tank got really bad in second part of the movie. I mean, at the parking lot scene he got penetrated by a freaking 9 mm pistol rounds while in the very first duty scene (the shoplifter) he took entire SMG clip into his chestplate without even getting a scratch. unless it's another layer of clues and hints (more man - less machine) or smth like that.

Most of the damage to the armor is done by ED209. If you watch the parking garage scene again, he looks tore up when he walks out, before they start shooting. Their guns just push him back a bit, and he has to keep his mouth covered, since it's the one spot they didn't armor.

Films today don't have the magical touch of the 80's! As a child of six years old watching this, I always loved the bit from 7:32 onwards, it was just so perfect! The way the music picks up tempo when the lights of the car go on, Robocop puts it in to drive and spins the wheels! The roar of the car's V8, mixing perfectly with the music as the car shoots off up the exit ramp. The music, which again shifts tempo when the scene shifts to an outside shot of the precinct! This build and reveal is how it's supposed to be done. The brilliance is how he is revealed piece by piece - you never get a full head-on shot until much later. Look at how you get a brief snippet of him on that TV screen at 2:57. The metallic clank and humming as he plods forth like something out of Frankenstein at 3:44 while the cops look on astounded is as surreal as it is exciting. It's details like these which make the movie.
