He didn't remember everything though. He remembered his attack, but he could only remember bits and fragments from his life. When the kid from 2 shot him in the head he had some memories of his son playing baseball but nothing about them would ever stick. I think that's why he let his wife move on.

@@JaybayJay In the opening of this video after Murphy has died and OCP is rebuilding him as Robocop pay attention to the segment where they talk about saving or keeping his left arm. Morton asks if Murphy/Robocop can understand them and one of the other people there tells him "it doesn't matter we're going to blank his memory anyway". So potentially at this stage, Murphy is still in there, having just experienced death and resurrection by cybernetics, and is listening to the docs discussing erasing his memory and replacing more of his body than they need to.

This scene suggests that Murphy has some sense of continuity of his existence. The POV goes from the moment of his death through absolute darkness to being a cyborg like no time has ever passed between these events. I like how Murphy probably registered the TV but had no idea it was him on the screen, so he didn't even have a reflex of looking at it, being totally unaware of the change he underwent, deep down still thinking he's a human. This scene is genius indeed.

Compare Jones’s attitude to ED-209. “Who cares if it worked or not?!” And yet Morton and his people, while not being so soulless and corporate, are indulging in some genuinely unethical mad science.
@ProtomanButCallMeBlues
@ProtomanButCallMeBlues 4 жыл бұрын
@JRPGFan20000 The DVD commentary explains that better. Originally Morton was supposed to be more evil, but they made it gradual and he became "the villain that never got his chance to be evil". The Robocop project wasn't for protecting or helping others. The Robocop project was the catalyst for his ego, and he projected his pride on it's success, even though we (the audience) know that Robocop only worked because it was Murphy.

I don’t think they wiped that much of his memory really. Definitely not as much as they wanted to anyway. Case in point...Robo still says the same phrases, peels out in the car and twirls his gun. He also remembers being gunned down by Clarence & his gang. So there’s quite a bit of Murphy still there.

The film was supposed to slowly humanize him. Starts off with the team assembling his helmet and voice. Then loses an eye piece exposing his eye. Then he himself takes off his helmet exposing his face. This is around the time he starts to gain his humanity and completing his arc by remembering his name. It's cool the way they did it in my opinion.

This has always been, since the first time I saw it, my favorite sequence from the film. The engineers having their private party celebrating the completion of their project, before presenting Robo to the 'suits', and reveling in their own ingenuity and naivety as well as in the splendiforousness of their creation... for such a notoriously savage action film, this is sensitive, humanistic filmmaking. Indeed it's little stuff like this which make me _love_ this movie.

I've never noticed this until just now but if you watch the last target Robocop shoots, he shoots it in the same way (bascially) as he died. Right arm off first, followed by the chest and left arm, then to the right side of the targets head. In the end there is no body except the damaged head. Probably a coincidence but with PV who knows.

Not accidental. He also does Murphy's gun twirl and the same driving mistake (the suspension/spark -thing) in the parking area as Murphy did moments later. They were all hints that his psyche was still there in the machine. The movie has a trillion clever hidden layers and symbolism that I personally still discover all the time. Like the broken coffee mug with the "World Class Husband" in the scene where he visits his old home.

This sequence is amazingly great, perfectly shows Murphy's death and "rebirth", but also, I'd say that it does the "show don't tell" manner very well, you are given the details through Murphy's POV as he's being reconstructed into Robocop, such as when they say "lost the left arm" or when they show off the robotic arm. Perfect way of letting the audience take in what is happening on-screen. And great hint in catching the very first glimpse of Robocop on the TV as he's walking by. But also, it must have to be a very frightening thing to go through; you die, and then you "wake back up" and find yourself being rebuilt into a machine in a sort-of Frankenstein way.

Actually was just talking to me buddy about this. The scene in the first movie where he's being built, and there's a new years party, a lady kisses him drunkenly, and that's what actually legitimately got me to...like...cry. Imagine someone kissing a dead body? It just was such a visceral, disgusting injustice, it made me sick to my stomach. It's really portrays them as people, but awful people. It was like watching someone kick a dog. It gives you the feeling that the world it takes place in really *is* on the rocks.

Something you will not find in a movie today especially not the Remake is little moments of subtlety for example when RoboCop is aiming at Targets when he goes to pick his gun up he does the little spinning thing with the gun that Murphy did for his kid and Lewis sees him do that and that's how she recognizes its Murphy and just five seconds they were able to establish this without any dialogue it feels like subtlety like this is a dying thing

Verhoeven wanted to make that blackout between the medics pronouncing Murphy dead and Robocop's initial bootup go for about a full minute or two, to really emphasize the slow transition from Murphy's death and rebirth but felt that audiences might not appreciate such a long silence. Watching it now, it does feel a little quick, that crossover. Would've been nice to see it Verhoeven's way or with a cursor that started blinking in the corner for like 30 seconds before Robo comes online.

sadly, armor plating on that tank got really bad in second part of the movie. I mean, at the parking lot scene he got penetrated by a freaking 9 mm pistol rounds while in the very first duty scene (the shoplifter) he took entire SMG clip into his chestplate without even getting a scratch. unless it's another layer of clues and hints (more man - less machine) or smth like that.

The way the music picks up tempo when the lights of the car go on, Robocop puts it in to drive and spins the wheels! The roar of the car's V8, mixing perfectly with the music as the car shoots off up the exit ramp. The music, which again shifts tempo when the scene shifts to an outside shot of the precinct! I love how they build up the hype when Robocop is revealed, how you get a glimpse on the TV as he first gets up, how he walks into the station and you can't quite see him through the glass, how all the police get hyped up and rush over to follow. Its just so well done man. Been in love with the movie since I first saw it as a kid.

This build and reveal is how it's supposed to be done. The brilliance is how he is revealed piece by piece - you never get a full head-on shot until much later. Look at how you get a brief snippet of him on that TV screen at 2:57. The metallic clank and humming as he plods forth like something out of Frankenstein at 3:44 while the cops look on astounded is as surreal as it is exciting. It's details like these which make the movie. Absolutely unforgettable introduction, gives me chills each time, and they didn't need massive explosions, bombastic music, or slow motion to accomplish it.

its a really creepy thought; you get murdered by cop killers then all of a sudden your brought back to life not knowing WHERE you are, WHO you are, who those ppl are in front of you...list goes on

This has to be the best moment in cinematic history because of the way they did everything you don’t see what their doing to him visually other than from his POV and that quick glimpse of him when he’s walking was absolutely genius it was a holy shit did you see that moment I would’ve loved to see how the audience reacted to that in the theater

My commodore 64 booted instantly. You turned it on and it was ready to go - you couldn't even tell. Now, actually loading a program from the floppy disk and started it up, that was another story. That could take minutes.

@Tsephe Letseka Really, I think it is realistic in our time like to have prostatic augment human being by then. Though the interface and hardware will be lot more powerful than it's fictional counter part.

Actually computers back then could boot instantly, if they booted from ROM like Commodore 64 did. Even input latency was lower back then. Today 100-200 milliseconds may pass between you press a button on your keyboard and a character appears on the screen. Back then this number could be as low as 30 milliseconds.

I STILL get goosebumps at that moment when you see RoboCop on the small TV monitor, and then again when hearing those heavy ass footsteps as he walks into the Police Station. My reaction hasn’t ever changed since first watching this age 10. My most favourite movie ever.
