This man,in my humble opinion is a genius. Brilliant novelist, artist, producer, director, just insanely talented, and his whole body of work especially his art and writing is so original. To top all of this off he's a very nice man.About 20 years ago I wrote to him at an la address requesting an autograph. After a while an index card and letter arrived, with clive profusely apologising for the delay, which didn't bother me in the slightest, I was so happy to have his signature. I have every book he's written and all of his films as both producer and director.

Genius! I have visited his website and there are thousands of artworks and paintings! THOUSANDS!!! literally! and each and every artwork is an individual masterpiece. I never realised that these artworks are so LARGE!!! CLIVE BARKER the name is associated TOO much with hellraiser series and candyman and that is a SHAME that CLIVE BARKER the ARTIST & PAINTER has never received world recognition. there is nothing less in his paintings than any other great masters of fine art.

15:18 - "What matters is there's something in you, which is unique to you. And that's the only thing that matters. Not being the next Clive Barker, not being the next Stephen King, not being the next Stephen Spielberg - whatever. What matters is being the next whoever you are - the only, whoever you are - and right or wrong, I'm the only Clive Barker."

What an illuminating look at one of the most original and unique author/artists I've ever had the privilege of being turned on to. His Abarat books, while intended and classified as being part of the young adult genre are equally appealing to me as an adult. Having the additional pleasure of having these paintings go with the book adds an incredible dimension to it. When I first heard there were paintings that accompanied the work, to be honest I was a little worried that by having actual pictures in the book it would remove my ability as the reader to entertain my own imaginative view of the world and its characters. My fears and doubts proved completely unfounded. Not only does the art bring out the book in ways I could have never imagined, it offers a kind of intimacy to the reader with incite into the characters and the places that makes them living and breathing. I was so happy to get sucked into this world. Thank you Clive Barker, and we can't wait to see the paintings you've been working on for the third book, Absolute Midnight, and we can't wait to read the fourth book. But I won't say hurry up or rush it. I trust your genius and however long it takes, I'm patient and willing to wait. Thanks for touching the world with your art and literature and being willing to share it with me and countless others!

Clive Barker. My all time favourite author. Long may you live and keep creating these wonderful worlds. I always preferred my nightmares to more ordinary dreams and you have been the one who came closest to actually charting or depicting the worlds in my (and many other's) dreamtime. Just do one more thing for me..finish the Books of the Art...I'm running out of time!

Yes there can be only one Clive Barker but sometimes Quiddity and Abarat feel like they are places I've visited in dreams..there IS and only ever will be one me but it amuseses me that the collective subconcious (I think..I'm not quite arrogant enough to believe only myself and Clive Barker visit these places nocturnally!, it really makes me think about the spiritual, dream life..Clive Barker has such a talent for capturing these elements of ephemera and putting them into his amazing work. I just love it he"s the best of the best!

humans used to be eaten by wild beasts. humans used to not understand the mechanisms of the world. it was confusing and hostile. having such elements in nightmares are preparations for a primitive reality. our lifestyles have evolved, but our brains? our MINDS? maybe our nightmares aren’t preparing us for modern reality. maybe even our emotions aren’t. stress is killing people in the modern world, because stressful situations are no longer a two minute scrap with a tiger or swooping bird. now your stresses last months, and they have no claws or eyes to see. it puts our bodies into paranoia as though there is a literal unseen enemy, when really it’s an abstract concept like the IRS. maybe the reason so many people feel that their emotions are wrong, is because they are? because we aren’t built for the world we’re building? what if we are making the human experience obsolete, and suffering for it?

Clive is a master of horror. He's been an inspiration for my own music and artwork. Incidentally, ten years ago I was treated for a huge noncancerous brain tumor that robbed me of my left-side hearing-a particularly nasty form of torture for a musician. One of the guys that operated on me was Dr. Barker (Chouinard)! Needless to say, I've never been quite the same since then!......strange.....surreal.....nightmarish.....;-)

Fear not, KC! From www.clivebarker.info/intsrevel34.html : "And finally, I’ve been working on the Abarat books, the two remaining Abarat books. The room I’m sitting in at the moment has piles of handwritten manuscript which is obviously Deep Hill, which I guess is now about 1,200 pages of handwritten stuff, and hundreds and hundreds of Abarat illustrations, so what I’m trying to do right now is go through these many illustrations and obviously the paintings here which have not yet been seen and I can start to put them together with Abarat Four which needs one more draft, otherwise it’s finished [...] Here I am facing Book Five, the final book of Abarat and it is huge. It’s huge in terms of its narrative, it’s huge in terms of its number of characters, it’s huge in the way I want to wrap it up. I want to make sure that all the questions people ever asked (...) all those questions are answered."

Abarat is fantastic. It's a "riot of color and weirdness" according to the interviewer from Trashotron, and he's right. It's a great mix of plot twists, colorful characters, imaginative environments, outrageous action etc. etc. Unfortunately, like many of Barker's works (Scarlet Gospels, Galilee, The Art series) he hasn't finished the series which started in 2002. He's got 3 of the 5 books published and part 3 "Absolute Midnight" ended on such a strange cliffhanger I cannot wait until he finally releases part 4.

To me Giger's world is rather sick and twisted. Barker's world is just wondrous, even when he is portraying very evil characters or sitations, indeed like a dreamworld. If we could enter dreams and walk around in them, my mouth would be agape in Barker's and I would be petrified, no doubt, but also thrilled and excited. Giger's world I'd just want to get away from as fast as I f'in could, seriously. That guy is seriously messed up.

Abarat is a young adult series about a young girl, Candy Quackenbush, who lives in a boring place called Chickentown. You can imagine what their chief industry is. She one day winds up wandering from school and meets a couple of odd characters on the outskirts of Chickentown that eventually lead her to the Abarat: an land mostly covered in water except for 25 hours, each representing an hour of the day, except for the 25th hour which is "A Time Out Of Time". Candy encounters a variety of characters including the charming John Mischief and his brothers who are part of antlers on his head, the adorable Malingo, the devious Kasper Wolfswinkle, the chief villain of the series (at least the first two books) Christopher Carrion and his sadistic grandmother Mater Motley, and many more colorful and vibrant characters, towns, creatures and cities. It's one of the most imaginative and energetic young adult series out there and we HOPE WE GET BOOK 4 SOON!
