I've grown my Clivia plant from seed and its been doing well, but has now outgrown its pot so its time to re-pot it. In this video I repot the Clivia, discuss where its come from and how its been doing over the last three years. I also change some of the old compost for a better free draining mix and remove some of the old dead roots.

I have one of these, I planted a seed in 2009, and mine is just a little bigger than yours. I haven't left it to rest during the winter, so I doubt it will flower. Will make sure to let it rest next winter!

i have a huge one off these.. gets bright orange flowers on it twice a year.. the mother plant is huge and has lots off baby's around it. well i say baby's but there big had well..i read they like to be root bound. i have it in a large pot that i have had it in a while.. and have not potted it for a few years. i have it in my stairs that had no heating. i think that's why it flowers so well.. great video

Well done twice a year is good, the bigger of my two plants only flowers once a year in spring. Yes, being root bound and also having cool temperatures encourages them to flower.

i think it does it twice though because there's quite a few plants in there. maybe it's different ones. I'm going to look this year and check..

I Grow all my clivia by seed as well. Have a couple nice Chinese variegated / dwarf types as well. I live in the US and since I moved to an apt. with Eastern exposure my plants don't bloom anymore. Even when I put them outside in the cooler temps during early to late fall for that 8 + week cooling period to urge flower stalks. It hasn't worked! They used to bloom twice a year for me when I had a Northern exposure. Just goes to show how much one's environment really makes a difference. They are healthy though, and the foliage is quite pretty. Would love to see an update on your plant!

@gulmina khan HI Gulimina. It is good you did not cover seeds completely. In my experience, i found soaking the seeds in water for 1-3 days help the radical (the first root sprouting) to break through. I then used some cocunut coir (ground up coconut shell) and soaked that in water. I then drained the water out so it was moist but not too wet. I then pressed the seeds into the top of the coir (using small 2 - 4 inch pots) with the radical/root side down. I found that if I put them in a dark warm place (I used my closet that contained the water heater) the seeds would sprout leaves within a few days to a week. Once I saw the green emerge from the seed I would put them near the window but not in direct sun. The radical root will push the seed out of the coir, so you may have to use a pencil to create a hole and then gently plant it back in. Once the seeds have a fair amount of leaves and roots, then I would plant them in a better soil, like shown in this video, with some kind of perilite or pumice, if you have access to it. I recommend visiting the different clivia society websites for more info. The original one is www.cliviasociety.org. There are also ones in USA, Australia and New Zealand. Also there is a Clivia Enthusiast group on YAHOO. I highly recommend joining as there are many breeders who share their wisdom! Good luck!

I forgot to mention that the reason I germinate the seeds in coir is because it helps prevent fungus, bacteria and mold from occuring like soils can do. If you are able to peel off the super thin skin around the seed after soakng them (and be careful not to damage or cut into seed) then that will help as well. However i would skip the peeling step if you risk damaging the seed. I have purchased many seed from various people worldwide as well as produced my own seed, so I have had a lot of practice!

I have one of this and the warm indoor temperature due to radiator forced it to bloom prematurely that the flower stalk did not rise above its leaves. beautiful plant,

Thats strange, normally its cold weather that causes them to flower. Maybe it was a sudden change from cooler conditions to warm. I keep mine cool over winter until its flowers start to open, then I take them to the livingroom so they are easier to see.

I have had a clivia for more than 10 years. I once got him from a colleague. He flourished nicely on my desk, but when I retired and took him home, he stopped flowering. Now he is standing here in the living room, without much sun (west side), with beautiful shining blisters, but never flowers. Because he apparently has to stand colder, I have now put him in the office where there is no heating. It is approximately 10 degrees Celsius. I give him 1x water a month. I had him a few years ago re-potted because I thought this was the problem, but I had no result. Can you give me advice on how I can make it bloom again?

I’ve over watered my Clivia plant and lost two leaves. The roots are not strong. There’s hardly any roots. Do I repot them? If yes, what should the potting mixture be like? I hope I can save the plant. I got it a month back. It has about 10 leaves in total.

If the soil is the wrong type then yes repotting would be a good idea. Clivia plants usually have lots of thick roots, so if your plant doesn't have many they have probably rotted off due to over watering. As long as the soil is free draining they are not too fussy about soil. A free draining loam based soil with some organic matter and lots of grit/perlite is ideal, but multipurpose with lots of perlite or grit will also work well.

@@Gardeningat58N I ordered it online, so it arrived only with hardly any roots. It wasn’t sturdy, so I had to dig out little soil and place it deeper. Thank you for replying. I’ll go ahead and repot it. 🙂

Soon will be a good time to buy them. They normally appear in Garden centres in March and April as those are the months which they normally flower.

I purchased one of these from the garden center about 4 weeks back, it had beautiful reddish orangish flowers on it, today the last of the flowers dropped off. Should I cut the stem of the flowers (not the stalk) or do I need to do anything else? If anyone can tell me it will be appreciated.
@Gardeningat58N
@Gardeningat58N 6 жыл бұрын
Yes, cut the flower stems off so that the plant does not produce seeds as you want the plant to put its energy into new growth not seeds. Once the flower stalk goes brown then you can remove the flower stalk. Its good to leave the stalk to go brown, this way the plant can re-absorb nutrients from it.

It's in the same plant family as Amaryllis and Daffodills. They grow well in shady areas, but need a cool season to encourage them to flower. I think they are sub tropical.

What time of year should you repot? Do you wait until flowering has finished?
@Gardeningat58N
@Gardeningat58N 23 күн бұрын
Its best to repot in spring or early summer, if it has flowers or a new flower spike then your best waiting until flowering has finished.
