This is a fascinating site. I am a mere amateur, trying to build the Isaacs beginner's clock. And I do not have a fraction of your equipment! But I am learning a lot from watching these videos. I watched you turn the wheel down to size, and it was howling. You were using a brazed carbide tool. Carbide tools are wonderful but whenever I get that very same howling sound I examine the tool with a loupe, and usually there is a tiny chip in the tool edge. I do not have the wheels to grind carbide. But perhaps this is the cause of the chatter. In the end it did not matter. HSS does not chip, but carbide does.Thank you for posting these videos; you make them, I'll watch them!

Sorry to hear of your problems. Hope you recover completely soon. I am from '43 so I know a little about old age problems. See you soon I hope

I get chatter if my tool height isn't right, it's dull, or there is too much play in the cross-slide. I use cheap plunge type carbide router bits with a 1/4" shank as boring bars and they work great. Thanks for sharing your knowledge.

Hey James, I heard you say, "as we say in Maine wicked sharp." I live in Bangor, Maine. I wonder if you are far from me. I haven't heard of you so I am not so sure. I am however, sure you probably won't put your location on here. I was just curious. Thanks for sharing your talent. All the best, Sean

Did you ever figure out where the chatter, vibration, was coming from? I'm an engineer and tend to get lost in those little retails. Unequal contradynamic forces or something be loose in the works? Really fun videos. A source of fascination or a soporific for us micromechanically oriented nerd types.

Inotice that the flat belt on the lathe rubs on the lower support? Does it need to be tightened or the motor adjusted up a bit? Enjoyed the video, keep em comming? Greg

Greg. What it really needs is a leather belt. I have one just haven't had time to put it on. That plastic one is supposed to be very good but I find it stretches quite a bit.

Thanks for sharing your great work. I collect chess clocks and have quite a few, most made in Germany. Some of them are old and stopped working and hopefully they just need to be cleaned. I would love to bring them back to shape if I can. Any help is much appreciated Thanks so much

Also carbide tools are not ideal for fine cutting, HSS is better.
