You know, the Gameshell just like other small Linux computers like the Raspberry Pi are ment for people to learn the Linux way in an easy and "accesible way" it's not easy to learn if you've never touched a computer before but with some practice and effort it can become second nature.

The Software is OK, but I use Linux for 10 years. I own a Clockwork Pi. In my opinion it is almost a perfect Hardware. I have also a view issues. WiFi reception is really bad. No SMA connector to add an external antenna. A extra USB Port would be nice to plug in a Keyboard. The Clockwork Pi OS is basicly just Debian. You have to run "apt update && apt upgrade". The system image from clockwork is not up to date. Also zsh doesn't work well with that weird Clockwork GameShell Launcher. So you have to use bash as login shell. All that stuff that Windows hides at. %PROFILE% is in your home directory in hidden folders. Thats pretty much standard in *nix. There is a .lexaloffel folder. (look at the pico-8 Website) kzbin.info/www/bejne/fKqofJp6bslqbZI With left and right you can switch between Favorites. It is usefull if you put a lot of games on the device I think. (I don't use this feature) Press Right or left and remove the game from the favorites. To put PICO-8 Games. Come on as a Developer you should be familiar with git. Just put your games on GitHub your local SSH Server, GitLab .... and clone them on your Clockwork Pi. Develop the Game on your computer and make a git pull on your GameSH. I think it should be possible to add a launcher menu item to do that. Debian provides you with everything you need.
@LazyDevs5 жыл бұрын
Oh wow, I had no idea you could press left and right in the ROM list. There is literally no indication whatsoever that this is possible. Thank you for clearing this up! As for Devs needing to be familiar with GIT - it depends. Not every GIT user is familiar with Linux command lines and how to set up scripts in Linux. These are very different skillsets. I mean, I agree that it's a good idea - this is exactly how I have my device set up. But that's not something I'd expect anbody to pull off. I might record a tutorial on that later. But consider how fool-proof the manual for assembling the device is. You don't even need a screwdriver. It seems like the manual for the hardware and the software are adressing wildly different types users. On the other hand, I'm glad you are enjoying the GameShell. I agree - I think for the right person, it offers a lot.

The PocketCHIP was something that got me to do a lot of firsts: My first Kickstarter support, My first time with Pico-8, my first time learning how to deal with linux command line, my first time I actually tried modifying something(I added a bigger screen). I don't have it anymore sadly. I used it until It broke, but thanks to it now I am a happy Pico-8 owner. Also, I enjoyed the new format for a new subject. The GameShell is way out of my price range, so it was never too much of a debate. The video was very entertaining nonetheless. (Like the PocketCHIP :-P)

Honestly, the fact that this can run pico-8 would be an instant sell for me, if it didnt use micro-usb for charging (as oppose to usb-c). I know if seems very small, but I know the device would last long with micro-usb, and I just try to avoid is like the plague as it stands though, Im eyeing up the rg351p (as that can also run pico-8, but doesnt have wifi built in) and trying to decide between the two.

The thing I hate about most handhelds is that they're just too small, and the buttons are too crammed. I regretted buying a PSP for that reason. Someone should make one that can be adjusted like a RAT mouse or something. I don't find it comfortable to hold them like 8:20, I'd rather have them fitting in my hands like a gamepad. The PSP was almost there... but not really.
@IcoKirov5 жыл бұрын
great idea inside a great shell. too bad what's inside the shell beside the idea is not that great executed... i mean, it's modular, but there are no modules for it. and in order to add shoulder buttons, you have to get a module, that is such an after thought, that it's completely outside the shell itself... what kind of modular design does not allow you to switch a an existing module so you can get some better one (for example one with more buttons)..

This looks like Dieter Rams made it. Jesus... so cool. And to answer your question, different consoles have different button mapping. It's a common conundrum on any game emulators so that's just something you get used to. I think you're being far too critical of something that gives you the liberty to DIY stuff. Try the Miyoo Mini, compared to that, the Gameshell is a breeze.
@LazyDevs4 күн бұрын
