It's a FAMICOM clone, most known as Famiclone. It could run original Famicom cartridges, as the "yellow" clone cartridges too. In my country (Hungary) it is a really common unit, could be found complete boxed units for cheap at chinese or flea markets for about GBP 10-14. Loose ones are cheaper. There are 2 or 3 kind of package versions.

The "High Grade Multipurpose Use" text appears on the original Japanese version of the mega drive on the shiny plastic circle surrounding the 'dome' of the cartridge port. It's printed on the right hand side of the power LED. It also has "AV Intelligent Terminal" printed on the left.

It's not a famiclone, it's a Mega Drive clone and it plays Mega Drive/Genesis games. You can see the type of processor it uses at 5:09 (SM801-A1). It's basically a Mega Drive on a chip and the same processor found in other common Sega clones such as the Mega Drive X or Sedaa. Another KZbinr by the name of HPZeta does an unboxing and teardown of a very similar clone if you're interested.

Cool clone. I've seen something similar before that looked real until I noticed it had no Sega CD slot. Not sure about the real Japanese Mega Drive 2 but I have a Japanese Mega Drive (original) and it says that weird "multi purpose high grade use" stuff on it too. So that's were they got that from it might be on the real Japanese MD2 like it is on my MD1.

I am confused because wiki says only MD1 and Genesis. From another side some sources note MD2 as redesign verison with black buttons. However there is same with red buttons that called Malasian version or MDII Europe (PAL) version. I have one but it is origin of China. I thought it is fake but Internet specifies Chinese ltd was Japanese Sega licensed branch in 90s. Is it true?

"High Grade Multipurpose Use | Intelligent AV Terminal" was the Japanese equivalent to the "High Definition Graphics | Stereo Sound" printing on the very early revisions of the model 1 PAL Mega Drives and North American Genesis systems (minus the "Stereo Sound")

By the way, SM801-A1 is pretty good chip. Stereo sound, RGB output, many settings: PAL/NTSC, 50/60hz, regions. It even supports power base converter. One con is that expansion slot is not supported

As a clone its best thing that was in Russia. Original earlier SMD clone (I have one, that was buyed in August 1998 (or 1999? I cant remember). It have regionlock switch and it can launch Virtua Racing (not x32 version). Newer clones cant launch it. And it have bigger circuit board.

Hi I just noticed this video! Replacing the voltage regulator (LM7805) will probably fix this thing. Then you can use an original Mega Drive 1 power supply to boot it. (or any 9V 800mA with center negative) power supply. I have a similar clone (with the SM801-A1 chip) and I must say it's pretty good. I removed the onboard 4 mode switch, lifted the right legs of the chip from the PCB and soldered them to 2 other toggle switches. Now I can switch between 50/60Hz with one switch and change language from English to Japanese with the other switch. Timing on this thing is great and it sounds pretty good. I know for a fact the SM801 chip also has the signals for RGB video on it, but the manufacturer of the clone(s) never hooked up those pins. I am planning on doing the "RGB mod" on mine and also true stereo output. the RGB mod makes the SM801-A1 clone compatible with the 32x :)

These were common in Romania back in the day, except they're not Sega, they're NES clones, even though they're shaped exactly like asian megadrive 2s. I actually have an asian megadrive 2, and it looks quite similar. You can tell the difference by counting the pins on the cartridge connector. The 3 boards inside were a RF modulator, a small board witht the cartridge connector and a black blob chip on board, a ribbon cable going up to the controller board, and the controller board, with power and reset. The plastic was very cheap. I actually have two of them, but they don't work. We also had the yellow cartridges, very similar to famicom games, but most of the time chip-on-board with the black epoxy blob, and I'm pretty sure nowadays that they were cloned as well.

SEGA must've either outsourced the production or something, because I have pretty much identical case in my hands, but the finish and the print are high quality. The mainboard has all the features and looks quite high quality as well. The reset button, for example, is none of that cheapo stuff. Most of the chips are sensibly marked as SEGA... There must've been a proper version that looked the same or at least a very advanced clone. All the caps are marked as Rubycon and nearly all chips as made in Japan.

yeah, vovan 145 is right, there were quite a lot of these units in the post soviet contries in mid 90's. but i don't think it's a bad thing that not many could actually own the original megadrive. after all, the only adventage of the original over the fake is that it has slot for connecting it to mega cd. but, from other hand, even some fake ones(early revisions) had that slot, plus they don't have region lock, usually, so you can play games from any region.

It is 100% a clone console. It has been made to LOOK like a Japanese Mega Drive. I even mention this in the video @ 1:25. Also please tell me when you think Sega removed the Sega CD edge connectors in favor of region lock bypass and language select switches!? In the video I even show the clone's cheap and nasty internal circuitry with its SM801-A1 (Mega Drive on a chip). If you're still convinced this is a legit Japanese Sega MD then the only one with bad judgment or improper research is you.

The place where I live it is even hard to get your hands on such counterfeit consoles let alone getting original ones without pouring money madly. Well, I have one of this counterfeit. Controllers are not so good but I got used to it after playing with it for while. The computer part gives incorrect sound output for certain games at certain stages. Now that I have the console a new problem stands now...Darn game cartridges......They are not easy to find in where I live..

There are two knock-offs using the Japanese Mega Drive 2 case : this one, which is probably a Famiclone, and an actual Mega Drive 2 clone (which I had in the late nineties). The Mega Drive 2 clone was 100% percent with everything I tried on it (pirate and original cartridges - but I didn't have Virtua Racing back then), had it's MegaCD 2 port and behaved identically with a 'normal' one as far as I could tell. It's PSU failed at some point and didn't look like a normal Mega Drive PSU, I don't think it had any Sega branding, don't really recall. In Romania these clones were somewhat common back then, but they're really hard to find nowadays.

NK0d3R Sorry, i know this is a late reply. The main chip in this clone is an SM801, which is basically a Mega Drive on-a-chip, so this fake would play Mega Drive\Genesis games if it worked (I'm kind of glad it's not a Famiclone).

High Grade Multipurpose Use, I think all objects fall under that description if you intend to hit people with them. ^_^ From what others are saying it was common in Russia, I'd say it would be better to have a knockoff Mega Drive than not have one at all. Nice bit of history you got there, I hope you can get it running some day. :)

airthrow PAL is the dominant analog broadcast system. For example Soviet Union and then Russia used SECAM but commercial VHS tapes since 80s were in PAL, and AFAIK there's no such thing as SECAM VideoCD or DVD, so Russia must be listed as PAL/SECAM country. And don't forget about Australia. And some asian countries used NTSC, most - PAL segaretro.org/Mega_Drive_consoles_in_Asia

I got one of these. Without fake expansion bay. Friend gave it away. Needed to replace cheap switches, and it works now, it had random resets earlier (bad reset button). Mine looks even cheaper inside, and doesn't have fake serial numbers and so on. But controlers are broken- directionals dont have all directions anymore. And video output is not sending any signal for some reason, only bad rf video. Yours may be not getting correct power on board, or bad caps on it. Check voltage reg output.

Back in 1995 some Taiwan-made clones were actually better than original, like had both working expansion port and region switches, larger capacity caps and headphone amp with a good quality. But they had high quality large PCB with a lot of components, one clone i got even had original Sega chipset. Today's clones are utter crap.

Btw, your switches are the same switches as on my clone. I know what they are. Four position switch is: - English/NTSC - English/PAL - Japanese/NTSC - Japanese/PAL Two-position switch chooses between PAL-A and PAL-B mode. In my clone, they are positioned on the bottom and have appropriate marks.

Were you trying to say that American people don't get fake crap off Ebay? Even Best Buy stores sell fakes once in a while, exactly what happened to the guy who got a fake IPad from Best buy not too long ago.

Maybe that was the one with the Famiclone inside it. My friend had a similar one, it only had one epoxy topped chip in it instead the Megadrive-on-chip and other accesories. The outputs was different. But the games weren't 16bit, they was NES/Famicom games. If you were lucky you got "original" games instead the unlicenced ones. They're horrible with a few exceptions.
