Westport United advanced to the final of the Connaught Shield with a very hard fought win against a very dogged Cloonfad United side that was very well supported by the locals.
Cloonfad took the lead on 35 minutes, sparking a pitch invasion by their young ultras as the three counties side were looking to create history.
Cloonfad dug in and made life difficult but Westport created more opportunities and finally grabbed the equaliser from Jack Dawson, who headed home on 65 minutes. Westport got a new lease of life but Cloonfad held firm until Dawson struck home the winning goal on 84 minutes to stun the large home support and it turned out to be the match winner.
Credit to Cloonfad United, who battled in every minute of the game and the supporters who were out in huge numbers to make the occasion spectacular.
Westport United now play Headford's Moyne Villa, who defeated Roscommon's Ballinagare United, in the final on May 26th, so mark that date in your diaries.
