Close Call at Toronto Airport - Air Canada Flight 1037 and Flight 606

Video of the near collision of 2 Air Canada airliners in 2020, an Air Canada Embraer ERJ-190, registered C-FMZW and an Air Canada Boeing 777-300ER registered C-FJZS were close to impact during their takeoffs.

I would have thought it unsafe to clear any take-off without ATC establishing that the preceding aircraft has confirmed airborne.

Good thing this occurred in good visibility, low visibility could have prevented the quick reaction of the triple 7 crew and caused a serious event. And yes clearing an aircraft to take-off while the first one is still on the ground is unsafe to say the least.

Great video - one note, in Canada the standards, visibility conditions, etc under which pilot-applied visual separation can be used is mandated by Transport Canada, not the FAA. Your nerd comment of the day! 🤓

On the air Canada plane is it normal while taxing to have sparks and steam coming off the wheels

There are ditches and taxiways either side the that runway so it wouldn’t be my first option. However, if impact looked certain I’d probably try it!
