As a layman I was wondering that in case the Indigo pilot would have aborted the landing & would have gone airborne and simultaneously the Air India plane would also had taken off then wouldn’t that situation had also brought both the aircrafts in a risky situation as they would have been moving in the same direction and almost at the same height. Being an atc I can tell if indigo had opted for going around then the situation had become much worse. There was the possibility of a Double decker situation. Hats off to wise decisions by atc officer and IndiGo pilot involved in the incident.

90% blame is on ATC. If IndiGo pilots reject landing after seeing Air India, then there would be two planes in the sky in close proximity which is just as bad.

Turbulence is an natural occurrence, it can't be avoided at some extent. and this can't handle by passengers at any given point just keep calm and follow the instructions given by the crew and pilot (lesson can be learnt from Japanese A350 crash).

Hello Gaurav! Even I was travelling with my family on 6th June from Delhi to Itanagar (HGI). We’ve faced almost same situation. Our plane was allowed for takeoff and it started to speed up but after a while our aircraft stopped with a great thud and a harsh landing resulting in wounds and chaos. Later it was found that other plane from Chandigarh was on the same alignment beside us at approx distance if 1000-1200 ft. I also tweeted and raised complaints but nothing happened! So I guess DGCA and airlines have to make strict reforms and ensure our safety!

One of the most informative video I have seen. Thanks for being so precise and not taking sides or faulting anyone in the process to subdue any public opinion. I am glad this didn't turn out to be a tragedy. If only we had multiple runways and a bit more time to avoid such instances. I have been in us and have seen with my eyes the line up of 6-7 aircraft in Chicago O'Hare airport, thanks to great weather. But, i have to start with a bit here as our cities are most polluted in the world and we cannot copy paste global.norms in our cities for corporate greedy.

You have rightly pointed every aspect of the situation but having worked as a Mumbai ATC I can think of one more possibility about why Air India seemed to have started its roll a bit late. Its may be because of strong head winds. The interval arrival spacing between two arrivals in mumbai is approx 120 seconds in which the ATC has to push one departure. But in cases of strong head winds, departure needs to add more thrust to achieve a desirable take off speed and eventually it needs more time to begin its considerable rolling speed as well. Indigo’s pilot and ATC would have thought that Air India will be airborne in 35-40 seconds and Indigo would get landing clearance before threshold and this would have ticked all rules correct. But if due to strong head winds Air India took 40-45 seconds then might be the situation became what it became.

No, all calculations are airspeed and not grounspeed. Headwinds will not affect airspeed .
