scott burnhan "Timber Wolf" is quite right, wild wolves are extremely wary of human beings. Except in Yellowstone and other areas where they are protected, biologists seldom see wolves in the wild except from aircraft, or when they have trapped them to radio collar them.

Wolves are genetically identical to Domestic Dogs. Going far enough back, some "omega" wolves(those not inclined towards any dominant behavior) who decided to try their survival fortunes following human nomads, were the ones who ended up being domesticated over the past 6000 years or so. The PRIMARY difference between dogs and wolves is one of "nurture", with only a little of the "nature" thrown in. ...all has to do with behavior. Genetically, A "wolf" is a "dog", and a "dog" is a "wolf." This may have something to do with why it breaks my heart when I see the majestic creatures hunted.

In this case she had no idea I was there but, she was obviously very curious about the truck and equipment. I find that the new diesel equipment exhaust smells a bit like deep fried cooking. That could have been the attracting factor in this situation.
@wudduplele10 жыл бұрын
I really don't think she "had no idea" you were there. She probably smelled you miles away. You may find exhaust to smell like deep fried food but for a wolf (or any animals) this smells nothing like food. "Lone wolf" are way less shy than the average member of a pack, more agressive and far more dangerous. She was there looking for you, sir.

As someone who wishes to hunt ethically, I believe the only time you should kill or wound a predatory animal is if you are attacked, or if you are a rancher and catch a predator in the act of going after your livestock. I'm no expert on any animal behavior, but this wolf probly knew you weren't an immediate threat and was more curious about the equipment there. I've seen horses and other animals watch cars and trucks go by with an interested look. Even saw a deer once looking down on a highway from a rocky outcropping up in Montana.

Great footage, I truly respect these magnificent animals. I hope this wolf has a wolf pack as they don't survive will on their own. Unfortunately some yahoos think it is cool to kill them for sport, leaving a few member's of a pack behind it is terrible. As far as I am concerned killing any animal for sport is criminal, ban all trophy hunting. Lets be true caring, moral stewards of all wildlife not kill them. All the best.

Nick Beddington Hi Nick. Kenton Carnegie, the only person killed by wolves in Canada in at least 100 years, was killed while working at a camp near Wollaston Lake, SK. People had been closely approaching and possibly feeding local wolves who were scavenging at an unlicensed dump. This reduced the wolves' natural wariness. Their strong wariness of people is what normally protects us very well. There's a dramatic photo from CBC (before Kent's death) of a man on foot, with a stick, closely approaching a wolf in the area. Instead of hurrying away, the wolf stands its ground, bristles, apparently growls - which is totally abnormal wild wolf behaviour and a dangerous situation. Wild Sentry (educators on wolves) has a very informative page featuring the CBC photo: www.wildsentry.org/Killer_Wolf.htm ...So, yes, I'm thinking Ron Cox is right on the money with this one.

I am inclined to believe the official Human Wolf Kill record keeping in much of wild Canada or Alaska is substandard and may or may not be accurate. Hungry wolves leave few clues.

From the wolf's behaviour it appears that people have been feeding it. I hope this practice has been STOPPED.

There are no humans directly feeding this animal Susan. Perchance she has happened upon human food around the railway before thus she is attracted to the vehicles in search of scraps. I had never seen that wolf before this incident and have not seen it since 3 years later. I belive you are very well educated in the wolf department Susan but i belive there are to many variables to put into consideration before coming to a firm conclusion. She may have just happened upon me that day. We are exactly 64kms from civilization of any sort at this chance meeting. She could make that in a day.
