Oh please let's do a music theory / audio engineer analysis of a baseball game. 😂😂😂
@nacoran7 ай бұрын
Some acoustic topics... -Yankee Stadium messes with singers singing the anthem with the echo (there is actually an acoustic weapon designed to do something similar by playing back what someone is saying just out of time enough to cause people to stutter). I"m not sure that the new stadium is as bad though. -Most famous fan chants... Off the top of my head I remember it always sounded like Lou Whitaker was bing booed, but they were saying Lou... the famous Daaaryl chant that messed with Darryl Strawberry, loud stadiums like the old Metrodome or Turner Field with the tomahawks going, actually, a rules question too... back in '05 they made Houston keep the roof open in the postseason... Houston wanted it closed because it was louder and more intimidating, but every rule I could find says the team gets to decide if it starts open or closed. -Does spin rate affect the pitch of the hiss of a pitch? -Does a loud crowd favor the offense or the defense? -Best national anthem performances. -Interesting music/baseball crossovers. Phil Linz threw a harmonica angrily at his coach (Yogi Berra) on a bus after Yogi yelled at him. Stan Musial also played harmonica. Bernie Williams played guitar, and in one of the 'Bo knows' ads back in the day Bo Jackson didn't know Diddley (in a follow up ad he did play, but it was faked). There is an old clip I have been looking for where they got some players to sing "I just called to say I love you" (Stevie Wonder) for one of the national broadcasts on Mother's Day. I know Ricky Henderson was one of the singers and he was really bad. MC Hammer was discovered by some A's players (Dwayne Murphy and Mike Davis). Apparently Denny McLain played organ.

In cricket the video review have two tools they can use to check on very faint nicks (it's version of a foul tips). The first is the "hotspot" an infrared image system that can show the heat generated by a ball striking a bat, even on the thinnest of hits. The second is "Snickometer" or what is now called the more boringly named "Ultra edge", where it does what you showed in the second part of your video, an audio based detection system that shows spikes via an oscilloscope. Using those two systems I've found that they generally get any referred call regarding ball hitting bat to be correct.

Another Tumpane ejection tonight as well. I wasn't aware of all the ejections in the past few days except for the Wendelstedt one and Tumpane's last night. It's certainly a lot, and we may get to 200 again this year. I hope you had a nice time off.

Great analysis! To the ear, in real time, it is an impossible job to get right 100% of the time. Why MLB picks some things to review and not others boggles the mind. Looking forward to the next video ! 😂
@KevinQuinn817 ай бұрын
I feel like they can do the thing cricket does with the audio and looking for spikes in the wave when the ball passes the bat to see if there was contact. Just change the rule to make it challengeable and have that be part of the review.

To me, it did look like it changed spin after the swing went through and before hitting the dirt. I think he got this one right.

This is about as a basic fix by technology as possible, especially given it already a proven technology in other sports. Synced up microphone with camera and infrared hotspot and this never gets miscalled again. No excuse possible, MLB must implement either immediately or in the past. I have yet to see a single justifying reason why basics like this aren't got right yet

Confidential to broadcasters and KZbinrs: "timber" rhymes with "limber"; "timbre" rhymes with "amber".

This has been solved in cricket. They go to a replay with audio.

Which is cool. Unfortunately you can't really reverse these kinds of foul calls consistently. This one you're good to go, batter's out because 1st is occupied with less than 2 out. If first is unoccupied or 2 are out though, you're either giving the batter first or calling him out, and either way someone's going to be very (rightfully) upset at that outcome without getting to play it out. And what about R3? Does he score on the imaginary throw to first that puts out the BR? Does he get thrown out trying to score? It's really hard to reverse any foul call, even an erroneous one, without giving someone something they didn't earn.

Let’s just pretend this wasn’t strike 3 or anything important that would end an inning. Somebody check the umpire’s DraftKings account.

This would have been a perfect time to show us the 3d data. Was it a strike all the way through the zone? Did it get close to the bottom of the zone at the end of was it all an illusion?

American musicians generally pronounce "timbre" /ˈtæm.bɚ/, using a French-inflected nasal A (as in tam-tam). Australians, though, will pronounce the word closer to our word for forest products. Enjoy the videos!
