I have a recording from PRISM that I believe was from somewhere between 1987 and 1990. (It was during the first PRISM logo.) These credits were present on that version. Also, their computer malfunctioned and cut off the post-credit part, jumping to a PRISM commercial instead of finishing the movie.

And I always thought the credits originally had the split-screen effect that we see on the TV airings and on the VHS and DVD releases.

Yes and no. VHS tapes and old televisions used a 1.33:1 aspect ratio (aka 4:3) which looked more like a square. This movie was released in theaters with a *2.40:1* aspect ratio, which looks much more like a rectangle. However, you'll see that they had to crop and stretch 2.40:1 movies so that they could fit on 1.33:1 screens, like this. While the theatrical version used a split screen, they had to merge the credits and the video in this version so they wouldn't have to cut anything out.
