I'd guess people aren't just voting for this record thinking you haven't heard it but would like to see your thoughts on it

One of the most singular hip-hop records ever. It feels more like watching a movie than listening to a record.

One of the most unique and beautiful albums ever made, truly an astronomical flex of what hip hop can do and be. This album casts such a strange spell and has such an (truly the perfect word for this album) ethereal vibe and energy, it defies any kind of words one can say about it. It's something you just need to hear to feel.

I’m the same age as you, Myke, and I remember being so excited about this album. It legit opened up a whole new world for me in terms of an abstract approach to writing and art in general. I loved the second Themselves album for the same reason. Fun fact that you may already know: I listened to a podcast conversation between Why? and Odd Nosdam a few years ago and Odd said that the reason many of the songs on this album are made up of 3 different beats that all fade out is because he didn’t have a sequencer so all the samples would start slipping and become out of time after a couple of minutes. So he let all the loops ride for as long as they would work and when the beat started getting out of time he would fade it out. He said he originally made a lot of the beats just to listen to on headphones on the way to class and then the three of them made songs out of them.

Hell yeah man, Anticon was my shit back in the day. Saw Sole in college, love the first Them album, 13 and God, etc. That crew and Living Legends was dope.

4:52 really hit me, I can understand how myke interpreted it but to me the line speaks to the process of making art in a very intimate and vulnerable way, because when you're writting something (or doing anything artistic) you are pulling from your perception, your sensations and experiences, but, if you do it enough, a big part of your life becomes making art itself, and so, when you want to talk about how you make your art, you pull from the present, you are making art right now, so why not talk about it? That dread you feel when it's you trying to make art and you're too in your head, you start going meta, spiriling down your emotions, to me the line captures that perfectly. (also that Björk T is dope)

I think people voted for this because they knew you could introduce a lot of people to it. They probably thought "oh, Mike is a total rap nerd, he'll be able to sell this album the best"

Worth noting that these were all originally released as 10" records which is why they're all around the same length and every track has a 1 and a 2 (side 1, side 2). I like how these are all less songs but collages and woozy pieces that just blend in and out of each other. Shame they didn't ever do another record like this (aside from maybe Greenthink).

I usually just vote for the one I wanna see your thoughts on most. But I also don’t know how the poll is created. This is a magical little record and it’s nice to hear how you feel about it!

I wore this album out when I was in high school in the early 2000s. Great video, an entire Anticon video would be dope

This album is great, but the first time I heard about it it was a review where someone compared his rapping voice to Adam Sandler. And now I can’t get that cursed association out of my head

Great review for a great enigmatic album. Found a copy of the american Mush pressing this past summer.

Back in the day Anticon was too weird for me, but it was mainly due to me being a DJ and wanting more regular beats to scratch to. I had plenty of friends into it though. The underground hip hop soundscape was pretty diverse in the early 2000s. There was also the whole Project Blowed thing which happened before that and was pretty abstract. Even Heiro influenced a lot of people with their internal rhyme styles.

I was excited to see this cause my favorite artist right now is Yoni Wolf. It’s interesting that he was doing these weird hip hop albums and now he’s a singer in a rock band. I love what he’s doing now but I’d love to see him go super weird again. Him and Odd Nosdams “Reaching Quiet” album is one of my favorite things and honestly broadened what I thought you could do with music.

@@AudreyAdz Also that small album he did with Doseone "Object Beings" is pretty out there. Also also his verse on "Bad Entropy" on Oaklandazulasylum has my absolute favorite lyrics from his entire career. It's so good

For an OOME video, this album is very Of Your Element! 😄I might have to check this out. I'm not too big of a hip-hop fan but I happened to really like stuff like clipping. and Dälek (both of them better than Death Grips... sorry, guys) when I heard them, especially clipping.'s 2020 album Visions of Bodies Being Burned.

I think people „missuse“ the oome format to vote on records the want to hear you talk about in a formal review were they know you are a fan of. That being said: i‘d love to hear your takes on anticon. Maybe that could be a video. I would appreciate it.

This is one of those albums with one massive banger (apt a) and the rest doesn’t live up to it. That’s not to say it’s bad, just apt a is so good . Another example of this kind of thing is luomos vocalcity (tessio the song).

Haven't heard this in years. Dose One is either amazing, or trash, imo. I got to see Jel live (speaking of Anticon), and was highly disappointed. Probably one of the worst hip hop shows I've seen live.
