Damn he reallly trusted his band on the Ed Sullivan show performances. First time I’ve seen him play with his back to them 😂

His left-hand technique is just mind-blowing, and this performance truly highlights the sheer mastery he had over the drums. I have to wonder what this sounded like for the band onstage, and what kind of stage monitoring there could've been back in 1970; I can only assume there were side fills of some sort offstage (on both sides), but still... I think this just illustrates how *great* the ensemble must've been to be able to play *so* tightly...being set up with only the visual aesthetic in mind (for television), as opposed to their conventional setup - with the rhythm section together as a trio, nestled within the horn sections and the horns being stacked together. For those of us who've played in this type of ensemble, I'm sure you can relate to how foreign this must have been.. It makes this performance that much more amazing!

I wonder if Bud Slingerland ever saw this. That’s almost certainly the infamous Fibes snare drum that got Buddy into hot water with Slingerland several times due to his endorsement contract.
