Follow our recommended 5-6 mile walk up #CloughaPike located on the edge of the #ForestofBowland #Lancashire. Filmed & edited by #LancashireLads
We start our walk in Quernmore, Lancaster, where there is free parking at Birk Bank. From here, we jump back on to the road for a short distance before turning off left and beginning the long slight gradual climb through some housing, a couple of fields and a farm (Rooten Brook Farm), on our way up towards the fells.
Expect to find lots of hidden gems on route, streams & mini waterfalls, old barn ruins and quite a bit of bird life too, not to mention stunning views back down towards the coast on a clear day!
At the top, once satisfied with your time at the Clougha Pike trig point, we will be pushing on, what seems further into the fells. It can get a little wet under foot in places, but there’s a clear enough, wide enough path to follow without getting ‘bogged down’ by those wet spots.
Eventually, we will be turning off left, rather than continuing on towards Grit Fell and Ward’s Stone (slightly right). This left turning will bring us to the shooters track, not the biggest fan of it’s purpose for shooters but it’s a really handy, public footpath to use, descending Clougha Pike. There is an alternative extremely rocky route down, but we have found this too sketchy, especially in wet conditions, so best to jump on the shooters track and play it safe with us instead :)
Once reaching the shooters track, we will be turning left, however for a relatively quick put stop, you could turn right and head for the Andy Goldsworthy Clougha Pike Chambers, a rather popular bit of land art perfectly located high in the fells. There are other bits of land art further down on the descent too, seen here in our short film… we didn’t get over to the Chambers, but we will film them another time for you!
Eventually at the foot of the shooters track, rather than going through the gate, we’ll be bending off left on to a grass path. Best to use GPS so not to miss this turning! This is our final stretch back to the car park at Birk Bank… and that’s it, the Clougha Pike hike is complete!
