I think the meaning behind the line “But don’t be here to stay” is the ghosts telling Kel that she can get help from them for now, but she can’t stay with them forever. Eventually, she’s gonna have to go on with life using the help that the ghosts provided to her to successfully live.

Thank you! I'm so sick of everyone saying "oh she killed herself" like no. First of all, I don't think that they would make something that dark. Seocnd of all, the ghosts are obviously here to help her move on from her lose and get along with the people around her or find new people. And finally, the line "don't be here to stay", like you said, is the ghosts telling her that she can't or at the very least shouldn't stay here. Like get rid of that mindset. Let go. Same for the scenes where she's drowning, I personally thinks that that's supposed to represent the feeling of "drowning" in your own emotions. You know how some people even describe depression as a flood building up in their heads? Yeah that.

I kinda just realized the symbolism of their animal features. A songbird for George, a creature both representative of music and never-ending optimism, a bunny for Brenda to represent both her involvement in show business and her ability to bounce back, and a wolf for Dave both as a representation of the character he created and his perseverance against all odds and his loyalty to his dream. I’ve watched this video about a dozen times, and it always makes me cry. One of my best friends in high school was always there for me when I needed her most at my lowest. She helped me get into therapy, and feel safe enough to do it. I found out last year after we haven’t talked in a while that she had died two years previously. I feel like the ghost were meant to help kel be happy after the death of someone she loved. Brenda showed that you need to keep moving no matter what, Dave showed that even if people put you down, you get back up and prove them wrong. The final ghost (i don’t remember the name) shows her that you can still be happy even if something horrible happens.

I had a theory on each ghost’s way of helping Kel based on their reveal in the trailer. George was the first ghost to tell Kel his story, as she’d lost her I’m assuming maternal grandfather based on evidence that these ghosts are tied to Kel’s life in some way. George had lost his wife, yet was able to continue on as even though it hurt to go through life without her, he had the memories of their time together to look back on and smile over, the bad memories included. So long as you have the memories of your loved ones in your heart, they’re never really gone. Brenda is George’s wife based on a lot of evidence (especially the ending of his video). She was losing control of her body and wasn’t able to dance, yet her daughter encouraged her to never give up on her dreams, showing her mother that dancing wasn’t just in the way you moved your legs (Brenda danced with her arms, her voice, and in her head, long after she was dead). Brenda never gave up on her dreams, even when she died she was still dancing because that was her passion. From Kel’s story we learn she was ridiculed by her peers and put down by even her parents. Dave’s story was about karma and what you make of it, what karma you made giving back to you. He never gave up on Wubby Wolf and always moved forward to accomplish becoming an animator. Even when that big shot cruelly turned him down, throwing his pitch into the garbage, Dave still got his big break thanks to George and Brenda’s daughter! An old saying is that for all the bad luck you experience, it just means something good is coming to counterbalance it all. You just have to be patient. For Kel, I think the lesson she needed to learn there is that the people that put her down all her life won’t get anywhere because they were mean, and expectant of things they didn’t want to work for. Work hard and good will come your way, as Dave did in getting his Wubby cartoons up and running.

Ok here's my theory: Kel was bullied at school, her parents doesn't care about her and abused of her, and the only one who cared about her was her grandfather. But one day her grandfather died.
