CLOVIS by Triplepoint Outdoors: Broadhead Test

This is a test of the 100 gr CLOVIS Mechanical broadhead, by Triplepoint Outdoors.
Here is summary of my 2022 Testing Procedure & Scoring w/ the scores of the Clovis posted in parentheses as well.
Total Clovis Score: 85.6 = 9 Golden Arrows
1. Flight Forgiveness (20%, 20 pts)
This is not just a test of how heads fly out of my bow, as it was in the past. With a well tuned bow, properly built arrows & good form, almost every head flies well. That's why in the past most heads got a flight score of 9 or 10. But that doesn't help those who may not have perfectly tuned bows/arrows/good form. So now I am gauging Flight Forgiveness. This is based on how the head flies for me, how well it spins, how "sensitive" the flight is to imperfections, & the exposed surface area of the blades. The max score of a Mech is 10 (20 on 20 pt scale) & the max score of a Fixed is 8 (16 on 20 pt scale).
2. Cut Size (20%, 16.84 pts)
The more tissue being cut, the more lethal the head, all else equal. The entrance cut, total cut, & width of the cut (a crucial variable for bloodletting) are all scored:
The entrance cut size is compared to a standard of 2.5" then that fraction is weighted to 7% of the score. (1.6”+.55”/2.5 X7 = 6.02 pts)
The max cut size is compared to a standard of 2.5" as well, then that fraction is is weighted to 7% of the score. (1.6” +.55” /2.5” X7 = 6.02 pts)
The max cutting diameter is compared to a standard of 2.0", then that fraction is weighted to 6% of the score. (1.6"/2 x 6 = 4.8 pts)
3. Blades (20%, 18.7 pts)
Initial sharpness (9%, 300 grams=9/10=8.1 pts ) & Edge Retention (9%, +0 grams=10/10=9 pts) are measured using the Edge On Up Sharpness Tester. The pressure needed for a blade to cut thru a copolymer wire is measured in grams.
Edge Retention is the loss of sharpness after the head is shot in Penetration Test 1, thru 1/2" MDF and 2/3" rubber foam mat & Clear Ballistics FBI gel. For every 50 "grams" of sharpness lost, 1 point is deducted from 10.
What are some sharpness scores for common edges?
A butter knife takes 2000 grams of pressure to break the co polymer wire.
A new high end cutlery edge: ~ 375 grams of pressure.
A utility razor blade: 200 grams.
Based on the many broadheads I have tested, here is my scoring scale:
Out of the Box Sharpness:
0-200 gr: 10
201-300 gr 9
301-400 gr: 8
401-500 gr: 7
501-600 gr: 6
601-700 gr: 5
701-800 gr: 4
801-900 gr: 3
901-1000 gr: 2
1001-1100 gr: 1
1101+ gr: 0
Ease to resharpen or replace blades is judged & given 2% of the score. (8/10=1.6 pts)
4. Penetration (20%, 14.67 pts)
There are 3 penetration tests:
Pen Test 1: 1/2" MDF, 2/3" rubber foam mat, Clear Ballistics FBI gel. Depth of penetration is compared to a standard of 9" & weighted to 9% of the score. (8" = 8 pts)
Pen Test 2: Layered cardboard. # of layers penetrated is compared to a standard of 70 layers & weighted to 9% of the score.
(51 layers=6.56 pts)
Angled Penetration Test: How effectively does the head penetrate 1/4" MDF covered by carpet at a 45 degree angle. This accounts for 2% of the score. (2/2pts)
5. Durability (20%, 12.5 pts)
Each head is shot thru 1/2" MDF 3 times. Its condition is judged 1-10 after each shot & weighted to 12% of the score. (10/10 = 12 pts)
If a head survives that, it is then shot thru 22 ga steel plate twice. Its condition is judged 1-10 & weighted to 5% of the score. (1/10=.5 pts)
If a head survives that, it is then shot into concrete once. Its condition is judged 1-10 & weighted to 3% of the score. (NA=0 pts)
Steel plate & concrete are certainly not "realistic" mediums, but they do reveal the outer limits of a head's durability.
BONUS: Heads will be rewarded bonus points for special, intangible features such as: rotation, no O rings/clips for mechs, extra thickness, hole size, other unique designs, etc.
+1 no O rings, +1 practice lock, +1 pivoting blades, +1 modularity
-2 blades tendency to close, especially when pivoting -1 blades closed throughout gel Penetration Test 1
Total Bonus= +1 pt
TOTAL Score Clovis: 85.6= 9 Golden Arrows

All of our testing has been very extensive, and the Clovis performs extremely high in ALL testing that we've done. We just ran it through 18gauge steel as John did and the head was perfectly fine minus a very small tip curl and the cutting blades were perfect!

We were interested in the steel impact so we tested today in the shop. Shot a Clovis through 18gauge steel, perfect hole, leading tip was perfect except maybe a slight tip curl, cutting blades were perfect. On a rear deploy gator style head, as well as one that locks, or a slip cam head, forward motion is what deploys the cutting blades. We've had complete pass through on every animal taken, and with phenomenal entrance and exit holes. Heads that lock can cause deflection, excess drag on bone, or have the tip setback too close to the wing blades, causing deflection. The ClovisTM simply performs, and all data and slow motion videos are on our Facebook page and social media! Thanks!

But Lusk’s did break, so saying the one head you shot didn’t break doesn’t nullify his test. His was also proved with video evidence. Also when you guys say you got full pass throughs with full entrance and exit holes, does that mean the extra penetration was cause by the blade being closed through the soft media and the opposite side reopening the blades? Looks like a very intriguing design and wonder if there’s a slight flaw in the head that keeps the closed in the soft media or if John’s test is has an oddity that creates this result.

@@trob205 From our data, ballistics gel DOES NOT respond like animal tissue. To date, 100% of game taken with the Clovis has had huge entrance/exit holes with hearts cut in half. The issue is the speed of bow that he is using. Every rear deploy gator style head, and there are many on the market, responds the same way in gel..but not in animals because tissue in animals doesn't self seal behind the head. That's the issue, he needs to shoot them all out of a high speed crossbow to parallel the effect in an animal! With regard to breaking, I'm going to attribute it to all the tests he did before the steel weakening the blades, because we never got one to break at all last night....he should have 2 more new heads though so he can go straight to the steel and see!

@@trob205 What we've talked with him about is that the gel doesn't parallel real animal tissue unless shot with a crossbow with sufficient speed to show that, and that's what we've found with our real world testing. Full pass through, full expansion, and full 2" entrance and exit cuts blowing through game; all of which is available on our Facebook page in vids and pics!

Nice design with some great features. Looks like you were correct in your assumptions prior to the testing. I agree with you in that locking blades would definitely help the performance and going to a blade design with more mass will help .

Ballistics gel doesn't represent tissue and flesh well at all because it's meant to impede motion. Using a Ravin crossbow sending the Clovis show what happens when it truly hits an animal, massive entrance/exit and helical cut through the animal as evidenced by all of the big game we've taken with it! All have had perfect pass throughs!

I am not bashing your head, just offering suggestions to improve them. I really like the design concept but broken blades in an animal cause no danage.

We would love to re-test our head with John being present because we are not finding ANY damage at all in pass through of the 18gauge steel! The tip is fine, and cutting blades are in perfect shape; so something was odd with his test. We will put the Clovis up against any mechanical or fixed blade, as evidenced by our big game animals taken with it! Complete pass throughs!

Locking of the blades is a plus and minus. When you lock them, you get possible deflection and excess drag on bone. All heads take moving through a medium to deploy, it's just that with gel, it stops the arrow so quickly that it can never represent flesh and tissue. We proved that with our Ravin sending it through gel and it deploys and cuts a perfect helical path! All of our data, pics and video are on our Facebook page!

We actually eliminated so many variables with the Clovis. Perfect centric flight, perfectly held and secure cutting blades with no other mechanical device, massive impact energy. It's all there! Every game animal has had huge entrance and exit holes that you will never see with a slower compound vs gel...you have to use a higher speed crossbow with gel to see it, but on game animals ANY bow will produce results! Thanks!

Hey John it looks like after the cardboard penetration test that one of the blade tips broke off. Could just be a weird angle like the ballistics gel when you measure.

I didn't notice a tip breaking off. With Penetration Test 1, the camera lens on my phone sometimes makes it not line up well with the positioning of the broadhead and the measuring tape. But the measurement I report is accurate. Oh and also, it’s common for heads to kind of bounce backwards due to the elasticity of the gel. If you look closely you can see the cut in the gel extends much further than the final resting point of the head.

John my friend…. I’m surprised this scored so high. I honestly feel like this head is way too inconsistent and is more than likely going to fail. It’s unethical to use a head like this on an animal. They need to pull these from the shelves until they can figure out how to get the blades to lock open. The magnet is cool and the tip & blade thickness are all positives, but the blades closing is a major fail. 👎🏻

I subtracted a couple points just due to the possibility of the blades closing, as I wrote in the Vid Description. But it still scored well due to its other strengths.

The weird grind on bevels caused that thing to kick off to the side on every impact. That is going to cause a lot of drag on the shaft and hurt penetration. Part of me wonders if they accidentally ground a batch the tips wrong and are now marketing them as a feature. On a side note it may be worth factoring the price per head and "reusability" in the final tally.

The grind actually is great because it keeps the edge very sharp, but also very strong. The original Clovis is great for normal compound bows, slower crossbows, etc. because of the impact CUT. The Helicut is our true single bevel grind on opposing sides to give it more helical motion through an animal, along with a severely sharp chisel-type tip to blast through the toughest animals on the planet! 1.The ClovisTM doesn't have tabs that hang out of the ferrule to drag in air, our blades are fully hidden inside the ferrule 2.Our leading tip is much further out in front of the wing blades so that a cut is secured before wing blade deployment,in other heads like Sevr the tip is too close to the wings and could...could...cause deflection in angled shots 3.Our single bevel sharpening allows a much stronger, and sharp, edge while inducing rotation to greatly increase penetration and tissue cut 4.Our tip and blades are cut from .039" 420ss which is thicker than most any mechanical 5.The ClovisTM can pivot around bone and the blades will open right back up because there is always pressure on the wing blade stubs to do so 6.Our 7075 ferrule is as strong as titanium in material spec 7.We get instantaneous deployment upon impact 8.The EarthTecTM system holds the cutting blades securely and perfectly closed at the shot and in flight for the most precise short and long range shots compared to any head 9.Our rear ferrule shoulder increases the back of the ferrule by 10% to greatly increase penetration by not allowing tissue to drag on the arrow shaft 10.The rear design also employs the Magnus effect of airflow around the broadhead to self center in flight 11.EVERY big game animal shot with the Clovis has had huge entry/exit holes with hearts cut in half 12.Every game animal shot with the Clovis has expired quickly with large blood loss and recovery 13.Our modular tip system allows hunters to pursue multiple game species by changing the tip for different types of performance 14.We are very proud of our ClovisTM design and can't wait for everyone to watch us perform this fall, and we appreciate all of the huge interest in the head and the design...it came from a love of the sport and huge passion for bow hunting! I was excited initially with the design of the single bevel head. I thought it might have the advantage of single bevel with the Sevr pivoting blades. The excitement was fleeting when it was revealed the blades don’t lock in open. It caused enough concern I will not shoot a game animal with this head. Close but no cigar.

@@triplepointoutdoors No disrespect to TriplePoint intended, I’m an avid bow hunter but not an engineer . My concern was from the video I watched. If I have any doubt I will not use a broadhead I have concerns with on a live animal. I have no doubt it will kill . I did look on your website and did not see any video or other information that would have lessened my concern. I look forward to seeing more information that might change my opinion.

It's not uncommon for gator style heads to have problems opening or staying open in test mediums...but then do very well on game.

Well they tried some different stuff and that's cool, I would think a single bevel w light blades would shear them off in the mdf I was surprised they held up. I wish it had opened on the gel to see how much rotation it actually getting. Thanks for the test it was an interesting one.

We are getting about 90degrees of rotation out of the normal Clovis, the Helicut gets much more rotation at around 120degrees, but the faster the bow, the more rotational energy! I mean its hard to knock the Rage broadheads for failures, then turn around and score this broadhead soo high. I love your videos and I know you always try to give the small companies with new ideas a fair shake. But that broadhead failed at everything other than being a fancy field point.

Well, I had to be consistent with the scoring. I don't know what else I could've done in the scoring. The Trypan broke a blade twice in cardboard and on the first shot thru MDF...this one proved much more durable than that. But I still docked it a couple points for the blades closing...and I noted that concern in both the intro and the conclusion. The blessing or the curse of the scoring system is that it's consistent.

We will put our Clovis up against any head on the market. The reason that is seemed like the blades stayed closed is because ballistics gel is intended to STOP heads and bullets! If you shoot the Clovis out of a compound versus a high speed crossbow, you get vastly different results as we will show on our Facebook page by doing it! Slower compound bows don't show good results in ballistics gel because it stops the head too soon. Our Ravin testing showed the Clovis blasting through the entire gel block and out the other side; further than any mechanical tested! Furthermore, you can see the deployment of the blades and the helical path beautifully through the gel block with the Ravin because it has the speed to show it in gel...compounds don't in gel, but they do on game!

This is the first review of yours where I don't agree with the final score. I realize it's all scoring system based but I think we can all agree that this isn't an 85-score worthy broadhead.

Thanks for the comment. Michael. I have to stick to the scoring system I have in place; that's what keeps it from being too subjective. I did dock it 3 pts for the blades closing in some of the testing. And I voiced the concerns in both the introduction and the conclusion. Not much more I can do than that. It's really hard to say that the blades would close in an animal. Gel and cardboard have their limitations in replicating animal tissue--and gator style heads like these have a tendency to close up. Same thing happens with Rage NC, Deadmeat, Truglo and many others. The magnet may create a bigger problem with them closing, but I can't say for sure--hence, I stick to the scoring system and voice the concern.

I see a lot of comments complaining about your score for this head. I see your replies and understand the scoring. But perhaps for 2023 when there are obvious flaws (like blades failing to open and stay open) you could doc extra points. You have a score guide line. You could add to that with negative points for things just like this, blades breaking, bending, Feral bending etc. Just set it up so they take off of the final score. Failure top open could be -1 full golden arrow, where as something less severe such as a bent blade would be -0.5 golden arrows. Ranking this head with 9 golden arrows is deceiving. Even if you didn't round up I think 8 is deceiving. But to rank it as a 9 in my opinion puts it right up there (on paper) with other heads that have performed exceptionally well. Something I'd say is safe to say this one doesnt.

I appreciate the comment. I actually did dock this head a total of 3 Bonus Points for the blades not opening. It’s outlined in the score sheet. (It’s also outlined there that 85 pts receives 9 Golden Arrows. Golden Arrows are not subjective; they’re awarded based on a pre determined scale of the 100 point scoring system). And even those Bonus Points, both positive and negative, are consistent with my other tests. I have to be as consistent as possible. At the same time, while I can see the blades closing as a potential issue in a hunting situation, I’ve not even hunted with it. There are other mechanical opening heads that have not opened or stayed opened in testing but then people swear how effective they are in the field. So I have to be careful making claims about what “will” happen in the field vs what “might” happen in the field. I do my best to create tests that will predict how a head performs in the field, but unless I’ve shot a head thru actual animals, I really can’t say 100% what will happen. I remained true to my scoring system, consistent in my bonus points, took 3 points away for the weaker areas of concern-yet due to the other strengths of this head, it still scored fairly well. So I added a verbal concern about that area both in the intro and in the conclusion. The fact that some think the score is “too high” is largely, if not wholly, due to the weaknesses revealed in my testing. I gave this a lot of careful thought and stand by my approach. However, it does also cause me to consider scoring in the future and how I might be able to add some process in 2023 that would be more helpful. But that’s not clear to me at this point. This is the first head that has scored well yet has a design issue that “may” make that scoring seem overrated. Again, that’s why the extra verbal cautions in my commentary in addition to the score. Hey John can you by any chance move your camera slowly to the angles that show 8”? From that angle it looked a lot less. Looked like the edge of the Gell was aligned before 2” on the Stanley tape. Thanks Joe. The challenge is the positioning of the camera lens (iPhone) and the tape and arrow...depending on how close it is to the camera. But most of the difference with this one is that often times broadheads penetrate to a certain point then the gel forces them back a bit, as it can be kind of elastic. So I measure all the way to where the tip penetrated, not just its final resting point. If you look closely, you can see the cut extending about an inch or inch and a quarter further than the broadhead's final position.

This head should have scored a 5 just for the magnetic closures but 0 on everything else. You mentioned that the bevel on opposite sides would cause rotation but on the same side would go straight. Wouldn't it steer (deflect) it in one direction instead? Seemed like a lot of deflection in the targets.

Not at all, the cutting blades cause helical rotation on the original tip, where as the HelicutTM gets more rotation from the true single bevel on both. We've had nothing but great performance! Thanks!

When you say it should have scored a “5”-what are you talking about? And why would it get a 0 for flight…sharpness, etc? I score each head on a 100 pt scale. 20 pts for Flight; 20 for Sharpness; 20 for Penetration, 20 for Cut Size and 20 for Durability. Then it is given a corresponding Golden Arrow rating proportional to the cumulative score. There is no way I can just give it a “5”. It’s flight, edge retention, cut size, penetration, durability, all gave it the score it received. It was docked 3 pts total for my concerns about the blades potentially closing prematurely. That’s fair and consistent with my other tests. It earned the score it received. It doesn’t mean there are not concerns; I’ve well noted them. But those concerns do not negate its strengths.

Imo, when the wound channel is not much bigger than a field point because the blades fold in after impact, that's a big failure. The fact that the blades broke into pieces is another big failure. This head deserves an F and should not even be considered as an option for hunting.

Like everyone else I'm a bit surprised by the score as well. I think it definitely has some potential. But the blades weren't open in the gell test. I've seen better penetration in the cardboard. Not the sharpest out of the box and didn't even make it through the steel plate once without breaking. This is one circumstance where I'd have to just ignore the score and take a hard pass.

Head was fine, leading tip was great, and the cutting blades perfect! With regard to the gel test, which I'll address today with all of our tests, data, vids and pics....as well as big game kills. @frank browning I'm going to explain that today on our Facebook page and why everyone who tests gator style heads in gel gets it wrong. The Clovis, like any style rear deploy, deploys beautifully and cuts to a full width when going through animal tissue as evidenced by our hog, deer, ram, and antelope kills. The problem with gel is that it's intended to greatly impede and stop bullets and arrows. It self seals, and wraps around the shaft to drag and stop arrows way faster than in game. I've tested the ClovisTM in gel with my Mathews compound and the ravin crossbow. The problem Mr.Lusk had is that he used a compound. All broadheads stop at around 6-8in and don't have the energy like they do going through animals to see the cut path. You can,however, see the true deploy with a bow with sufficient speed like a ravin or other higher speed crossbow. I have gel tests we've done on our Facebook page...and ill do more today in order to explain, how in gel you really need that speed to do a correct test. When I did it my mathews shows around 8" of penetration, more than any mechanical, but with the ravin it truly shows what it does through an animal. The ClovisTM blows through the entire gel block sticking 2" out the back side and fully deploys through the gel with a 2" cut and it's helical. John needs to use a crossbow for those tests because he's not showing what truly happens in animal tissue...which is VERY different than gel! All of our big game kills have been 100% deployments with huge entrance and exit holes as you would expect. All of the tests done on gel should be using a bow with sufficient speed to show the true cut path, because mechanical or fixed, he's getting that part wrong respectfully! I'll be going over the physics of this today on our Facebook page and we have all of the data and video to explain this important point. The head will pivot around bone because when one blade folds in, the wing butt of the other side is fully out, and under extreme pressure wanting to always fling back open...John didn't realize this point of how the pivoting action works, so I'll explain the physics today with data and results! With these that's correct, cause the magnet will close the other blade. But with the Sevr (the improved Ulmer Edge) that can almost never happen cause the blades pivot on a hard impact or they overlap in the back to absorb energy if both blades have a hard impact. No broadhead has held up to the durability tests like the Sevr for that reason.

Naw, it was for 2 reasons. One is the heavy arrows I was using for that--they're a lot easier to get out of the MDF. But also, the positioning of the camera accentuated the kick quite a bit.

No go. If you choose a mechanical go with a Sevr. I swore off mechanicals after a not so great experience with the Sevr last year. With the modern fixed blades, IMO there really is no need for a mechanical on big game anymore. If your setup is properly tuned there shouldn’t be an accuracy difference.

They're for the set screws to go in to keep the blades closed in practice. And another set of holes is to give less weight to that portion so the blades close properly.

Actually the single holes in the wing blade are a design feature to make sure that there is ALWAYS more mass of metal on the cutting blade side, so at any bow speed, the natural position for the cutting blades is to stay against the magnet, with the magnet securing them perfectly until impact! It's a design for a reason!

Well, I can't just "give it a lower score." The way the scoring is set up, it gets the score it gets based on the performance. However, I do have some subjectivity when it comes to the Bonus Scores. I docked it 2 points for the blades closing. That's more than I've ever docked a head for a single weak feature. But like I always say..."you check out the scores in the areas that matter to you the most." :)

Sevr knock off with a crappy cut on contact bladed tip. Every cut On contact tip style broad head I’ve use always brakes. It’s the weakest point of the broad head. They always bend over and brake of bone is hit.

I can't fathom why these companies are still putting cut outs or holes in their blades. They are painfully obvious weak points. The rage blades now have those scallop cuts on the back of the blade that bend backwards or break. These companies need to stop removing important material from the blades.

@@triplepointoutdoors the practice screw seems likea good idea in theory but if it's sacrificing strength then I don't see how it's worth it. What about selling a pinned practice head with the broadheads. Then you can practice with an identical head and add strength to the real one by eliminating the extra hole.

@@chadwoodward2402 The strength is there, our mechanical is one of the only that made it through 3 mdf layers with 3 shots and no breakage or bending. The steel broke the blades from being stressed before, but doesn't happen on a new head per our tests on Facebook that are available. The Clovis flies just like any field point, and is THE most accurate mechanical head on the market...so we definitely can remove any of those holes, but it's not really weak there because the wing butts double cover those holes on impact, leaving you with about a .080" thickness in those areas! Some of the strongest mechanical blades on the market, and our tip is a tank! Thanks!

The blades don't close if you shoot it in to ballistics gel with a proper bow with enough speed as it would be hitting an animal! We've shown that! The blades are thick .039" 420 SS and when we did the 18gauge steel test today in the shop, the blades were untouched and fine! We don't know what happened with John's tests, but we are definitely NOT seeing any damage at all in steel! I'll test it all day long in front of people to see the head go right through steel if you want, and all of the data is available on our social media on Facebook, Insta, KZbin, etc.Thanks!

Also, I don't think it was horrifying since most mechanicals at least bend in mdf and ours did not, and almost all fail to some degree through the 18gauge steel; our head holds up super well to get a 9/10 review!

If you look closely, you’ll see the cut in the gel that extends an inch and a half in front of the broadhead. It’s kind of hard to see on a phone. Sometimes it can’t be seen on film. But it’s common for a head to impact the gel to a certain point, then due to the elasticity of the gel, it springs backward a bit. So the head did penetrate 8”, then bounced backward 1.5”. Again, you can see it if you look closely. At the same time, it was docked 1 point in the bonus section, for the blades not opening in this test and another 2 pts for the blades potentially closing too readily.

Well, a mech and a fixed each have their advantages. Sure the IW is much more durable and will penetrate better...but this or most mechs will fly much better and have a much larger cut. Everything is a tradeoff.

I once killed a doe with a field point to prove a point. Also, I pass on every mechanical so do not take it personal. I have only ever shot fixed blades and always will.

IMO a complete failure. 0 stars. Unreliable blade depolyment makes for a complete failure. Sure lots of cool features but it would be like buying a muscle car that didnt start most of the time regardless of repairs

@@triplepointoutdoors That's good but the other big problem is blade deployment and having the blades remain open while in the test media. The blades cannot cut to their full cut width if they are not in a completly open state.

@@frankbrowning328 I'm going to explain that today on our Facebook page and why everyone who tests gator style heads in gel gets it wrong. The Clovis, like any style rear deploy, deploys beautifully and cuts to a full width when going through animal tissue as evidenced by our hog, deer, ram, and antelope kills. The problem with gel is that it's intended to greatly impede and stop bullets and arrows. It self seals, and wraps around the shaft to drag and stop arrows way faster than in game. I've tested the ClovisTM in gel with my Mathews compound and the ravin crossbow. The problem Mr.Lusk had is that he used a compound. All briadheads stop at around 6-8in and don't have the energy like they do going through animals to see the cut path. You can,however, see the true deploy with a bow with sufficient speed like a ravin or other higher speed crossbow. I have gel tests we've done on our Facebook page...and ill do more today in order to explain, how in gel you really need that speed to do a correct test. When I did it my mathews shows around 8" of penetration, more than any mechanical, but with the ravin it truly shows what it does through an animal. The ClovisTM blows through the entire gel block sticking 2" out the back side and fully deploys through the gel with a 2" cut and it's helical. John needs to use a crossbow for those tests because he's not showing what truly happens in animal tissue...which is VERY different than gel! All of our big game kills have been 100% deployments with huge entrance and exit holes as you would expect. All of the tests done on gel should be using a bow with sufficient speed to show the true cut path, because mechanical or fixed, he's getting that part wrong respectfully! I'll be going over the physics of this today on our Facebook page and we have all of the data and video to explain this important point. The head will pivot around bone because when one blade folds in, the wing butt of the other side is fully out, and under extreme pressure wanting to always fling back open...John didn't realize this point of how the pivoting action works, so I'll explain the physics today with data and results! Thanks for sharing your thoughts, Frank. I will say, it's not uncommon for gator style blades to not deploy or close prematurely in test mediums...only to do very well on game. Not sure if that is the case with these or not; time and field tests will make it clear.

I honestly want to know. I teach an exploring hunting and fishing class. I was showing them the difference in mechanical and fixed this video came up and in 4 classes at 25 students a piece at least half of them said the same thing after we watched his review of the sver.

The ferrule is longer so that the leading tip is much further than the wing blades so there is no change of deflection, The leading tip, and cutting blades, all have several variations of single bevel sharpening for severe edge sharpness and strength. The tip and cutting blades are all out of .039" thick SS. The cutting blade hole is designed so that more weight always remains on the cutting blade side so that regardless of speed, it wants to stay against the magnet in flight. The cutting blades have a large 40degree bevel to induce helical rotation in the head. The wing butts do not extend beyond the cutting blades and are curved to gain the maximum surface area of cutting. The set screw holes allow us to put them in opposite the main screw to keep centricity and security in flight. The magnet sits in the center back of the ferrule with a round through hole to secure the cutting blades with NO retention device or o-ring. The ferrule itself is machined out of 7075 al alloy. The rear of the ferule has a 10% flare to greatly increase penetration while also inducing the magnus effect in flight to self center the broadhead for extreme efficiency. Our leading tip system is modular depending on what game the hunter is seeking, etc, etc.
