Bruce is so right about crossing the line. I'm an addict in recovery, & as my addiction grew worse, things became acceptable to me that never were before.. And as I did those things, they opened up NEW things that I gradually found acceptable, until eventually I was completely alone, & I had absolutely nothing... but the needle.

And this is what I tell people in recovery... If you're thinking of going back out (stinkin thinkin), remember to fast forward to the very last day before you came to recovery where you were down on the ground with nothing left, or in the back of a police car, or getting Narcanned by the EMTs!!! Hold that memory and feel it, then get yourself to a meeting or call your sponsor if you have one. We're all here for your recovery!! All the best to you!!!

He is trying to rationalize addiction. People that haven't been through it just have no idea what's it like. I'm not sure how meth is, but he is probably using just to feel normal.

In 2000 the surgeon who performed what was supposed to be my laproscopic tubaligation, came into the operating room with breath reaking of alcohol. It was 20 to 30 seconds before going under and I couldn't speak. Woke up 2 1/2 hrs later, when it was only supposed to take 45 min. He botched the surgery. Melted my fallopian tubes and made a 2 inch abdominal incision and completely removed them. He sent out the surgical nurse to lie to my husband to get permission. They told him the machine malfuctioned and caused the damage. Recovery nurses wouldn't even answer why it took so long, they left it to my husband to tell me when he was allowed in an hour later. I immediately told him about the strong odor of alcohol I smelled. This was at a tiny hospital in Kodiak AK. I could do nothing because no one was willing to speak up, they were too afraid of looseing their jobs. A friend who was a traveling nurse, but had worked at the hospital briefly, confirmed it was a well known ongoing problem with him. Some doctors get away with horrible things. And it's often the hospitals protecting them to cover their own butts.

I broke my leg a few years ago and had to have emergency surgery early the next morning. I swear to god the anesthesia nurse was cracked out of her mind..she stuck my hand like 4 times because she was shaking and her eyes were wild wide and red...she was rude as hell too. I was so out of it or I might've requested someone else or something, it was scary.

I used to go to church with a lawyer. He had a side business selling fake PhDs through the mail so his first felony conviction was for mail fraud. He gets out, returns to working as a lawyer, and gets caught embezzling large sums of money from his elderly clients so he gets his second felony conviction for that. At his sentencing, the federal judge even told him that he would be back as he hadn't learned his lesson yet. His license was suspended. After he gets out, he gets caught again for mail fraud as he had a scam business on the side selling personalized pens and pencils while working as a paralegal. This time, he gets sentenced as a habitual offender so he did hard time. He also had been calling himself Doctor as he bought one of his own fake PhDs. No drugs were involved. He was just stupid, lazy and greedy.

I'm a disabled veteran and it's hard for me to drive, and hard to get in and out of the vehicle, get my walker out, wrestle with the door, and do it all to get back. I worked at a famous hospital...as an administrator...for decades. There was one nurse,a long time employee, who was found to be "stealing" narcotics from patients. What happens in a case like that is the nurse reports that a patient is in pain and gets a "verbal order" from a physician for a narcotic pain medication. The nurse then gives the actual narcotic to him/herself and then gives the patient an injection of sodium chloride...a harmless substance. That nurse was caught, suspended and, under the hospital's "one chance at redemption" policy,he went into rehab, came out,and just recently retired from that hospital...20+ years later.

It's nearly impossible for a physician to lose their license in most states. I LOVE that you can always count on Bruce to keep it real. It's actually not unusual for very high level professionals keeping virtually super-human schedules and doing almost super-human things, to utilize "chemical assistance." These folks are just human beings like the rest of us....just as Bruce said. Even George Washington was a "weed connoisseur" (I'm not saying anything negative about weed, but some folks literally still class it as an "illegal drug," like the federal government for example) and grew it on his farm. I've learned in my 48 years that it's always better NOT to sit in judgement of others...as it's impossible to do so righteously unless you've literally walked a few miles in their shoes. P.S. I just want to say that the facial hair is quite distinguished on you Bruce! You wear it well!

I absolutely agree with professionals sometimes being the worst. I had experience with attorneys and some debate every rule they don't want to follow at the moment. And when they then mess up they blame their assistant to avoid bad reviews or liability. And then they wonder why people don't want to assist them anymore...And no, they don't think it's them... The worst about all professionals: they ALWAYS back each other up, even when they know they shouldn't. There are things outsiders don't understand and when you must defend each other, but sometimes you also need to clear your stables to save your reputation. I would not want to be associated with that swamp of a doctor, e.g.

I worked at the hospital parking garage when I was attending U of IA. A surgeon pulled up in a bright yellow sportscar and argued with me about $2.49 he owed for parking. He claimed not to have the money on him. He mocked me for my job, told me that he saved lives all day and threatened to call my boss. I picked up the phone reciever in my booth and said "I can call him for you, but the answer will still the same." As I started to dial the office number he *magically* found a $20 bill.🙄 I just took the money and before giving him his change I looked him in the eyes and said "You're a doctor with a sportscar and thats not enough for you? You think your better than me, but I don't lie to weasel my way out of paying for parking." He swore at me as he drove away and I put him and his license plate on the parking department's "problem child list". It's never enough for some people, you can never be too pretty or too rich.

Addiction changes you. Nothing matters once you get deep into it, but getting the next high, whether it be drugs, gambling, sex, or whatever your addiction is. It changes you, changes your life. Once you fall into it, the old you is long gone, and you will never find that person again. The joy, the innocents, the love for life is all gone.

The REAL scary thing was how normal this situation seemed to this guy's attorney on the phone, as if there's so many of these cases that many lawyers can live comfortably off of defending these Drs. THAT'S HOW FREQUENT!! I've seen a lot of doctors being a 3 time leukemia survivor and have had bad feelings about more than one

In the UK, as a medical student, we were told right at the beginning that, doctors are seven times more likely to suffer alcoholism/drug addiction. Furthermore, we were told that the chances of a doctors marriage ending in divorce, was also much, much higher than the national average. He then looked around the room & said, we're a pretty sick bunch of people in the medical profession. Go away & decide whether your desire to work in the medical profession, is worth the risk of screwing up your home life, because it can happen to anybody.

Methamphetamines don't help someone focus like prescription amphetamines do, they cause someone to HYPERfocus, which mimicks OCD, causing overcorrection and needless/senseless repetition, like needing to fix a door knob and loosening and tightening the screws so often they end up getting stripped, or polishing, and handling a silver chain incessantly until it finally breaks because the task never feels done well enough to the meth user. They lose the ability to manage time and tasks efficiently and effectively. Nobody wants any of that happening to them during surgery.

My brother was an anaesthetist and an L-fentanyl addict & alcoholic. Until one night after theatre, tidying up he took a little too much. One induced coma, helicopter flight to another hospital, week in ICU, 2 trips to rehab later he isn't an anaesthetist, but he's alive, and so are most of his patients (meaning he didn't kill any, allowing for disease and natural processes). Apparently it's not uncommon amongst Doctors, especially those w extreme responsibility and the over achiever complex. I am also under the belief a large number of pilots succumb too...

Substance use disorders are pretty common in medical professionals according to the ones in my recovery group. I even got to experience diversion when I had a nurse say I was drug seeking to the next shift. I didn’t understand it at the time because I asked for Zyrtec but when I got the itemized bill I saw that each shift I had with her my controlled migraines medication was “given” but I never had it. I felt empathy for her but it not much considering the cost of the meds.

Bruce, I’ve been in aviation for 20 years as a pilot. Surgeons are the number one casualty profession of aviation. My instructor use to say, “They’ve got a God complex and you can’t teach em how to fly. They act like they already know.” So it’s true, surgeons are academic all stars that crash the most airplanes they fly, because of their mindset.

When I was in college I had a philosophy class in which I gave a speech about how drug use leads to homelessness. The professor made it a point to criticize my perspective by saying there are a lot of professionals using hard drugs but are not homeless. Now in my 30’s not only do I see professional drug addicts I think back to that professor and think he was using too.

I never had a professional license but did work for the Police in Australia for 15yrs. I attended a party with some friends who I have known all of my life when I was about 25. Didn’t think much of it, went in, all was fine until I lost them in the crowd. The party was in a single fronted terrace house in Sth Yarra Victoria and was spilling out onto the roadway it was so big. While looking for my friends, I went into a room with the door shut and I saw people in there shooting up what I believe to be heroin. I nearly had a heart attack when they offered me some and couldn’t get out of there quickly enough. Found my friends, said I was going home, and all I could think of was if that house was raided by the police I could have lost my job due to the drug use in there. I wasn’t a professional and still my work and my job was more important to me than staying at that party. But it sure taught me a lesson about what parties I attended. After that just went to parties full of coppers and it was fine 😂

Addiction and alcoholism is a huge problem in the medical profession. I know of nurses with major alcoholism and addiction issues and have had several chances to get sober and just couldn’t do it. I’ve seen photos of nurses passed out in the locker room and it’s heartbreaking. Many are too proud and arrogant to admit they have a problem and do something to course correct. As a result, they lost their license and careers. All that studying and really hard work to establish themselves was for naught. I met a waitress who shared her story about how she lost her nursing license because she could not get sober. She had a bunch of chances, went through rehab multiple times and just couldn’t do it. The power of the addiction and open access to narcotics was too much.

When I was in nursing school, a young woman I had a class with got a DWI and she got kicked out of the nursing program and put on (school, not acedemic) probation. We were in shock she would do something like that. I hold my license I earned to a high standard, because I am the one who has to catch a mistake, assess for decline, give medications that have certain side effects I need to watch for that could indicate toxicity. I'm saying all this because, as you said, we are in a position of trust.

This is why I don't go to hospitals anymore. I was admitted one time because of an infection in my leg, and a nurse came at night, to give me meds. I was half asleep. She was supposed to put 3 pills in the cup. She thought I wasn't going to notice because I was sleeping, but I just happened to sit up and look into the cup. There was an oxytocin in missing, she told me. I must have dropped it in the bed somewhere. And she helped me look all over for it. And I saw her throw it on the floor. I had to get other hospital staff, and there it was crazy. I couldn't believe what I was saying. Another time, a nurse came in with a medcard and was supposed to be giving me my medicine, and she fell asleep standing at the car. Make sure it's on some sort of drugs, herself. Nodding out!

For anyone who has used drugs, or ever listened to music, its obvious they can have a mind expanding effect. They can hone an art, Layne Staley is a prime example. He just couldn’t seem to be that guy without the drugs, and once he was high he sang beautifully. However Layne didn’t risk anyone’s life but his own to sing high. So while I can see surgery as an art, doctors and staff should have zero tolerance for use while on duty.

OH CONTRAIRE My Favorite Criminal Lawyer !!! These "Professional A - holes" don't always get caught😡 My Father (RIP😢💔), was in a coma 1971-1991. (I was 3 years old when he was a cop on bike hit head on by a truck 🚛). Hence, Pops got mega $$$ from accident. Pop was in Navy so he was fortunate to get VA hospital for 20 years. (Although it also could have contributed to the length of suffering). So His mom, my Grandma took care of his "Estate" invested very lucratively for 18 of the 2o yrs she passed away 2 yrs prior. His sister my psycho Aunt took custody of Estate (i was in undergrad). AUNT & JUDGE LET THE BOND GO, AND EMBEZZLED MILLIONS. Why did they let Bond go 🧐 Because its the Bond companys who does forensic accounting after payout of "LOSS" THE BOND COMPANY ALSO PRESS'S CHARGES. Without the Bond company they had no one to hold them ACCOUNTABLE 😡 MY LOOSER LAWYERS COLLECTED ONLY 1 MILLION, of which they billed HALF. My Aunt left her husband dying of MS for dead took off with her "young son's best friend" 😮😮😮and the Judge RETIRED! MY BROTHER SAYS """THEY'RE LIVING OUR LIFE$$$!!!" To this day ZERO accountability!!!! PROBATE COURT MILWAUKEE WISCONSIN.....DAD WAS IN VA IN WOOD WISC. MY BROTHER & I LIVED IN CONNECTICUT. I MET WITH FBI IN MILWAUKEE WISCONSIN AT TIME, "''"THEY DID NOTHING THE LOCAL POLICE..... SIGNED ME OFF AS CRAZY 21 YEAR OLD "KID"""!!! SMH "EASILY PROVEN EXCEPT IT WAS THE ACTUAL PROBATE JUDGE""" 😡 Try living with that your whole life!
