The 80's were different. It was probably cable TV that did it because that meant everyone nationally was watching the same shows every night but celebrities in the 80's were on a whole other level than ever before. Guys like Eddie Murphy, Michael Jackson and Michael Jordan to this day are 1000x more famous than any other celebrity.
