In Texas I water my bamboos twice a day sometimes during the heatwave. I also put some mulch on the bamboos to keep them humid and it works good so far on some species. Last winter was horrible here, it was in the lower 20s so they got damaged but they grew back.

Very informative. Thanks for the timeline, it really puts the growing stages of clumping bamboo into perspective. I see it's also a good idea to install a deep and tall border from the neighbors, they can spread out!

Thanks for the updates! My stuff got nuked too up here near Seattle. I have a bunch of clumpers. I also have a bunch of timbers, but I like to play with fire, it’s super fun. You just need to manage the stuff. I have some 12 year old timbers planted bareback where the mother clump is mature but only has a 4’ diameter footprint.

That plastic wall that you put into the ground should also extend at least 15-30cm out of the ground. That way if there is debris, the roots cant use it as way over the wall.

Great video and information. It looks like you have your bamboo planted adjacent to you neighbor’s fence (as I am planning to do). Does it stay on your side of the fence completely contained in your yard? I have a concern about it growing under the fence in my application. Thank you.

Hey, I'm in Vancouver, WA too. Planted 50 robustas along my property line for privacy last summer and the ones that get full sun exposure got absolutely pummeled by the heat dome. How are yours recovering now that fall is here? Mine look like about 50% of the damaged culms might recover and the other 50% are probably goners. I am also starting to think about how to maintain an edge and not let them eat up too much of the yard. Have thought about renting a trenching machine to run along the front side of the hedge once per year or so. Think that would make quick work of it. Yours look really good with the lower culms trimmed.
@myboringchannel
@myboringchannel 2 жыл бұрын
The heat dome thrashed my bamboo, especially the ones furthest west. But I’d say 90 of my culms are well into recovery mode. Also, I’ve had the bamboo for years and they’ve never burned like that. The trencher is a good idea. You can replant what you cut off as well. I plan on taking about a foot off the edges of my grove next year. Glad to meet another Vancouverite here! Would love to see your grove in person!

Hi! In 2017 I planted two fargesia scabrida bamboo plants here in Rochester, NY (zone 6b). They have done very well since then. That is until this winter 2022. We had a couple of unusually cold cold snaps this winter (low single digits) and today both plants have turned totally brown and are dropping their leaves. Are they totally dead or just killed off above ground? What should I do to help them recover if still alive? THANKS!

When do all the messy dead leaves fall? Does the debris blow around when it's windy?

There is a ton of debris right in the grove. It doesn’t blow around at all and it keeps the weeds down (they’re almost non-existent) in the grove.
