Clyfford Still and the Albright-Knox Art Gallery

Long before the Clyfford Still Museum (CSM) opened in Denver in 2011, there was already a substantial, isolated body of work by Clyfford Still on public display-in Buffalo, New York, at the Albright-Knox Art Gallery. In this five-minute video produced for the CSM’s 2014 exhibition "1959: The Albright-Knox Art Gallery Exhibition Recreated," former Albright-Knox Art Gallery Director Louis Grachos, Albright-Knox Chief Curator Douglas Dreishpoon, and CSM Director Dean Sobel discuss how this reclusive artist came to donate 31 paintings to the Albright-Knox in 1964.

Every time I visit the Albright-Knox, I always spend some time with Still's works. It is always a treat. I really hope I can visit the Clyfford Still Museum one day.

I live in Seattle. When I lived in Rochester, one of the things my friends, and I enjoyed most was a visit to the Albright-Knox. I was speaking to an art dealer in town a while ago, and I mentioned the A-K, he looked at me with a sad grin and said "there's nothing like that out here". It's true.
