Thanks for this review! Amazon just recommended the Commlite speedbooster as Ive been searching for non native lenses for my GH5 and I was worried Id have to buy the metabones and pay 3x as much. @@TLDR_filmmaker Brew sounds good! Thanks, the shelves a bit came installed when we rented the place. Tried to 'set design' on them, better than before but I think it's too busy. TBH... I really need lighting help. I know I could take better product/talking videos but my space is tiny (in Taipei, Taiwan) and therefore restricted as to equipment/big softboxes. I'm using bounce light off the top wall/ceiling, it's not well controlled. Just got my new Sigma Art 18-35 upgrade over kit for my Lumix G7 so I'll practice shooting with the new gear this weekend, Viltrox'll come mid-Nov.

Oh shoot, you're in Taipei?! All my lineage is from there! I've been back a good amount of times, but the last time I was there was around when Taipei 101 was finished. Lots of great memories of the shopping, night markets, and of course the food! Watching some more of your videos, I don't mind the lighting setup you currently have. Everything is generally well lit so we can see everything without there being harsh shadows appearing. But I get what you're saying, it may look flat and not as unique as you'd like. Some basic tricks is to get some RGB LED strips that you could line at the back end of the wall shelves and you can switch up the colors to your liking for the talking section. You can also use some Fairy LED lights or just christmas lights in the background of your product shots to try and get some Bokeh Balls that will give the background more texture. However this may not be as easy with the limited space you have as you will want there to be some distance between the product and the background. At its core I feel it comes down to colors and textures of the background to give the foreground its focus, It can be as minimalist or as busy as you like. I will be doing some lighting tutorials/ideas sometime next year, until then I hope this helps give you some ideas of what you can do to add more to your videos. Keep up the good work my friend and always feel free to stop on by in the comments!

Sir, I brought Viltrox EF M2 for my BMPCC 4k and used nealy 08 month without any problem. But now I cannot Control Aperture thro' Camera. The Lenses I used Sigma 18-35mm f/1.8 DC HSM Art Lens & Sigma 18-200mm f/3.5-6.3 DC Lens using this Adapter

Hey hey The Media House! Thank you so much for checking out this video and asking a question! Hmm, did you recently update anything on the Blackmagic or the EF-M2? I would first make sure your EF-M2 is updated to the latest firmware, you can find them on the Viltrox Website. There is some sort of Green mode I think the viltrox has where you hold down the toggle button thats on the adapter and then turn on the camera. But I think thats usually just so you can change the aperture with the toggle. Lastly I would try this, take out the battery from the BMPCC, turn it on to release any memory power inside the BMPCC, then put the battery back in, attach the adapter and lens, turn on the camera. See if that helps too. (You can also try this step without any lenses to let the camera to power up and initialize, turn it off, and then put the adapter on and power on) This is my best guess on the steps I would personally take, these cameras are essentially computers so I troubleshoot them like such. Hope this helps! Thanks again for stopping by! Stay safe, healthy, and I’ll see you in the next one!

Hey may I ask you a question? I bought a BMPCC 4K and I wanna buy Sigma 16mm f 1.4. Shall I buy the one made for MFT or shall I buy a speedbooster and buy that sigma lens with canon bayonet? Could you explain the pros and cons and the major difference? My main focus is to record music videos
@TLDR_filmmaker
@TLDR_filmmaker 4 жыл бұрын
Hey hey Erichu Edits! Thank you so much for checking out this video and asking a question! If I'm not mistaken, that specific Sigma 16mm 1.4 lens is already made for Mirrorless, which means this EF to MFT booster will not work for that lens. There is a "EF-M" version of that sigma lens, but it's not the same as a "EF" mount. In terms of recording music videos, your lens choices will really depend on your style of video as well as how you like to operate. I myself do not own many Native lenses for my MFT camera because I prefer the feel of a manual focusing lens for my cinema work. But there are times where I will deploy an electronic lens because of either weight, setup, or a B-camera that's not the principle angle. So unfortunately I can't answer too much for the latter question as every filmmaker has their own preference based on Style and Deployment. Hope this helps! Thanks again for stopping by! Hello 特里! Thank you so much for watching the video and commenting! Honestly I don't see any problems with your video image, part of what may be bothering you is that he's on the mountain side, the lens was set to a wider focal length, possibly smaller aperture setting, so the bokeh doesn't have much of a chance to develop that kind of small detail. I'd say to use a more telephoto lens for that mountain side shot to get the mountains closer to the subject, but you may not enough room to move back to get the same framing. Thanks again for stopping by! It's really cool to see a A7iii (?) review in Chinese! Hey tean tan! Thank you so much for checking out this video and commenting! I totally understand where you're coming from in wanting to see a direct comparison between the two. There's a couple reasons why I didn't do a straight comparison as the optics really are very similar as well as the entire video was shot with the adapter. But ultimately I do not currently have a setup where I can do controlled consistent lens test samples so that viewers can see a lens being put through the same conditions over and over again. While I know this would be the most accurate method, my channel is also more based on using reasonsings that are not heavily spec based as I feel filmmakers get stuck in the ideas of specs and not real-world applications. I of course addressed the concerns for sharpness wide open, but I also shot the entire episode with the adapter so that people can see it in action. When it comes down to it, if someone has no prior knowledge of what a normal video was shot on, you would never know the difference between a Metabones, Viltrox, and Commilite even if all three were used in the same video. That being said, I will eventually have a very basic lens test setup for viewers that want it, but my channel won't let that be the entire focus of the video as that's not what we do as filmmakers, we film things in action where motion blur is taken into account, so in the end....sharpness may not really matter as much as we think it does. For photographers, definitely, for filmmakers, we get away with it a little more. Anyhoo, so sorry for this long reply, but just wanted to let you know why my video spends more time talking rather than doing test comparisons. I truly appreciate you checking out the video and stopping by in the comments! Hope I'll see you again in another video every Wednesday!

@@TLDR_filmmaker I did read the whole reply and dont really get it. I mean, sure sharpness isnt everything, but that doesnt mean I dont care about it. What kind of a setup do you need to test which one is sharper or if indeed they are exactly the same. Just film the page of a book with both at different apertures, boom comparison done! Other than that I like your channel.

Greeting's Владимир Павелко! In theory it should, the Viltrox EF-M2 that I reviewed worked with those cameras. This Commlite adapter should also work, but it may also depend on your lenses. Aperture control and IBIS should work if you are primarily a videography, but AF accuracy will vary from lens to lens that Commlite has tested if you're a photographer. Hope this helps!

I bought Commlite CM-AEF-MFT(B) Canon EF/EF-S Lens to Micro Four Thirds(MFT,M4/3) Electronic Autofocus Lens Adapter Mount Camera for Panasonic GH cameras - I had an 18-300mm for my Canon SL2 - connected to my G7 - autofocus does not work at all. Av and Tv work fine. Is there something I'm doing wrong? Some setting I need to change in my G7 to allow this adapter to work? Must I always touch the screen to focus?
@TLDR_filmmaker
@TLDR_filmmaker 5 жыл бұрын
Greetings Sobano! Thank you so much for checking out the video and asking a question! The one thing that I've noticed about these adapters is that you need to make use the AF switch on the lens is set to AF before you turn on the camera, this allows the startup of the camera to recognize that it has a AF lens so that you can use the half-press shutter button to get focus. Another one is to make sure your camera is set to AF instead of MF, cause there are definitely times where I forgot I have the camera switched to MF. These are the only two things that I can think of as to why touch-to-focus is the only way that's working. Hope this helps! Thanks again for stopping by and hope to see you in the next one!

Of course these were turned on. I generally reply on AF for all my work because ofmy old eyes. I've been doing photography since I was 15 and am now 72. So what I discovered was that my Sigma APS-C lens would not AF properly - I bought a Tamron and it does work jsut fine with the adapter. So the lens was the issue.

Gotcha! Glad you were able to narrow down the problem to the lens. It's weird how some lenses work with AF and some don't. My Sigma 18-35 and 50-150 works with the AF in photography mode.

The commlite can be found on ebay for something like $150 right now - and for the same amount over at Adorama you can get the Viltrox. I can also get a KIPON BAVEYES .7X for $209(used but 'E' condition) - is the Kipon worth the extra $60? Is that ebay commlite likely a fake?
@TLDR_filmmaker
@TLDR_filmmaker 4 жыл бұрын
Hey hey Sam! Thank you so much for checking out this video and asking a question! Out of the three the Viltrox is my favorite and one that I still use today for my telephoto lenses on the GH5 system. The Kipon I immediately returned when I got it and tested it, their firmware at the time did not trigger the GH5 IBIS on my Sigma 18-35 and I believe it took them over half a year to finally address the problem, so I just don't bother with them anymore based on that. Viltrox has been very active with firmware updates. Commlite I believe is not very active if at all. While the softening effect of their optics is desirable depending on the type of lens you use if its ultra sharp, I still prefer the Viltrox overall. Hope this helps! Thanks again for stopping by! @TLDR_filmmaker
@TLDR_filmmaker 6 жыл бұрын
Hey WSF! lol I think I get what you're saying, the unfortunate answer is you cannot put a speedbooster type adapter from m4/3 to m4/3 because of how the design. If something is made for m43 already, then the distance of the lens to camera is already set. The only way for speedboosters to work is to use a lens mount system that is a decent distance away from a native mft camera sensor. I hope that made sense too haha! Thanks again for stopping by man!

every focal reducer cause a loss in sharpness and every less gain in sharpness (and contrast) by stopping the lens down by 1 stop when compared to wide open but the general question i have is : do you get a better contrast/sharpness if you stop down the lens by 1 stop when using the focal reducer vs not using the focal reducer at all (like the 18-35f1.8 sigma lens at 18mm@f1.8 without focal reducer vs 25mm@f2.8 with the focal reducer) the idea is not using the focal reducer to gain 1 stop of light or get a shallower depth of field but just using the focal reducer to improve image shapness+contrast by stopping down the lens by 1 stop while not loosing 1 stop of light thanks to a focal reducer that adds 1 stop of light.

Greetings Amanieux! Thank you so much for checking out this video and asking a question! In my experience with these non-metabones adapters vs the bare Sigma 18-35 lens. To get the best of both worlds, the Sigma Bare lens wide open is both sharp and contrasty compared to when its placed in front of either boosters 1 stop down. This is of course if these elements of the image are important for the project at hand. The main reasons I use these boosters is not for sharpness and contrast rather its for the Electronic Controls of the popular electronic lenses, wider FOV, a little extra DOF, and a bonus extra stop of light when in a pinch. Sigma really did something magical with their 18-35mm lens, on its own the images are just stunning and the performance of the lens is second to none at that price range! Hope this helps! @TLDR_filmmaker 5 жыл бұрын
Greetings A Dee See! Thank you so much for checking out this video and asking a question! Your Canon L lenses should not have any problems in terms of communicating to the GH4 or GH5 (I'm assuming these are your cameras?) in terms of its ability to change aperture and relay Focal Length information for the cameras IBIS (if it has it). If you are primarily using this adapter for photography where AF is important, then I don't have a solid answer as each lens will behave differently with it comes to AF performance, even in video mode. My Sigma 18-35 and 50-150 is able to AutoFocus just fine, but my Canon 50mm 1.8 mk1 cannot. So if photography is what you're after, you may want to check out some photographer reviews on the adapter if there are any. Hope this helps! @TLDR_filmmaker
@TLDR_filmmaker 5 жыл бұрын
Greetings Frederik! Thank you so much for checking out this video and asking a question! That is very odd, mine does not freeze when moving between the focal lengths. I wonder if it might be because of the GH5's firmware, are you on the newest v2.4? I am still on the older 2.2 firmware because many projects I'm still working on is done on that firmware and I didn't want to break anything that i use with my GH5 like the Commlite and Viltrox adapter. I would see if Commlite has issued any new firmwares for the adapter and also email them and let them know what firmware your GH5 is on and what's happening. The more they know the faster they can come up with a fix if its related to the GH5's newer firmware release. Hope this helps! Thanks again for stopping by in the comments! @TLDR_filmmaker
@TLDR_filmmaker 5 жыл бұрын
Greetings Trispect! Thank you so much for checking out this video and commenting! Optically I would choose the Viltrox, but I haven't searched too much on how well the Viltrox communicates with the BMPCC 4k, I imaging it should be ok in terms of aperture control, but not sure about touch focus. In terms of EF-s lenses the contradictory comes from filmmakers accidently buying Canon branded EF-S lenses because they mix the idea that EF-S means Crop Lens. Canon Branded EF-S mounts will have an extra protrusion out the back that will hit the boosters optics. When you buy a third-party Crop Sensor lens that fits an EF-S Canon Camera, the Third Party company doesn't actually use a EF-S lens mount, they use a EF mount instead, so there is no protrusions in their Crop sensor lenses. This is where the confusion comes from. Long story short, dont buy Canon Branded EF-S crop sensor lenses if you are planning to use a booster. Hope this helps! Thanks again for stopping by! Hope to see you in the next one!

@TLDR_filmmaker 2 жыл бұрын
Hey hey E- Synagogue! Thank you so much for checking out this video and asking a question! The two lens options you suggested are a bit different in focal length so you'll have to understand if you want a 50mm look or a 75mm looks. The lumix 25mm 1.8 will give you a full frame equivalent look of 50mm, while the other booster version will get you a 75mm look. For me personally I would suggest to get the Viltrox EF-M2 over the commlite because Viltrox continuously supports their adaptors with firmware updates, commlite rarely if ever will. The Viltrox booster method will give you a brighter lens for low light and you will want to look for either a fast 24mm or 28mm lens to get you closer to the lumix 25mm. Either look for vintage lenses or Rokinon's, these are manual lenses only. If you need some sort of Autofocus for photos, then you will want to get the much more expensive Sigma ART prime EF lenses or save up for the Sigma 18-35 (which is the best value for a boosted setup). But if you don't have the money at the moment, then you're best bet is Viltrox Booster with vintage lenses or used rokinon prime lenses. Hope this helps! Thanks again for stopping by! Stay safe, healthy, and I’ll see you in the next one!

Its, of course, not a low-light beast, but all narrative filmmakers need to think about lighting to help craft the story. So the low light argument, to me, is no longer valid. Greetings Ivo! Thank you so much for checking out this video and asking a question! In terms of using them for video work where you use manual focus, aperture adjustments, and IBIS on the GH5. The Sigma lenses should work, but I would not attempt the Tamron as Tamron lenses have always worked weird with Active Adapters and could potentially be damaged. If you are using these lense for photography where Autofocus is crucial in your work, then I unfortunately do not have an answer as different lenses will focus differently when they have to go through an adapter to a different camera format. Generally speaking if AF is part of your work, you will want to go with native lenses for your camera body. Hope this helps! My guess is that the lens itself had a different type of focus protocol that was used in previous cameras, so the adapter isn't sure what to do with the information. Hopefully either Viltrox or Commlite will eventually update the firmware to account for this. I'm betting more on Viltrox as they have been release firmware every few months since I bought the adapter. Thanks again for stopping by! Check back every Wednesday for something new!

Hey man i got a question i was hoping you could answer. setup= GH5+viltrox EF-M2+sigma 18-35. My question is when i have my gh5 on continuous autofocus there is a constant clicking noise from the viltrox im guessing. Does that happen when you have yours on autofocus? It's really annoying because i know my mic is picking the clicking up. Love the setup but the click is rendering the continuous autofocus useless from a VLOG stand point. I hope you can help! just subbed btw.

Hey hey West Virginia Wild! Thank you so much for checking out the video and asking a question! Unfortunately I feel there is no way for our Sigma 18-35 lenses to have near silent continuous AF because of a couple things. 1) The lens was not originally built for silent Continuous AF, so the way the EF protocol is talking to the adapter and then to the camera body comes in "stepping" form instead of a smooth transition focus. 2) The motor technology isn't a fly-by-wire system like a Canon STM focusing lens. I'm not entirely sure if a STM lens would fair better in continuous AF mode, but it might be more silent than an HSM lens. For vlogging with the GH5 the only thing I can think of is to use a Wired or Wireless Lav mic depending on how you use your camera, or to perhaps invest in a native Panasonic lens for silent AF. The new GH5 firmware thats coming at the end of this month supposedly enhances the Continuous AF in video mode, I will hopefully do some tests to see how well its improved even though I don't use this feature. Hope this helps!

Why does my Commlite adapter read as f/1.3 compared to 1.2?
@TLDR_filmmaker
@TLDR_filmmaker 5 жыл бұрын
Hey hey Nate! I think it's just how the firmware determines the display with what the lens transfers to it. Even if it says 1.3, I would just treat it like a 1.2 as the Sigma's aperture is still technically wide open and not caught somewhere in between 1.2 and 1.4 (1.8 / 2.0)

Love the format of this video! Great follow up to the Viltrox! Was going to do (and am still interested in doing) a Commlite comparison video to the Viltrox myself but didn't manage to get the promotion in time. One thing I would add is that anyone who bought the Viltrox from Sharpest light in the initial offering days was guaranteed 18 month warranty and it was stamped on the Viltrox outter box packaging. The warranty only applied to Sharpest light orders. Also, Manual lens attachment does work on the Viltrox now as of firmware 3.0 at least. One other note about the Viltrox, its has German made Optics which is why you may be noticing it is sharper! Did you happen to find out where the optics were made for the Commlite? Happy shooting everyone!

Hey Karr! Thank you so much for checking out the video and commenting! I'm happy to hear you love the format of my channel! My Commlite booster has that 18mo warranty sticker, I wonder if they are still doing that for both Viltrox and Commlite. Its the weirdest thing when I suddenly got a huge influx of comments in my older Viltrox videos that manual lenses do not work. I tried my Rokinon and Vintage lenses on the booster and everything was fine! The good news is that users have been in contact with Viltrox and they are working on a fix, the bad news is that problem more likely stems from Panasonic changing something in their OS. My GH5 Firmware is 2.1 My Viltrox is 2.2 As of these firmwares version I've had no problems with my Manual and Electronic lenses. I do not know where the Commlite optics are designed from, though I would say its most likely the same optical design with a different coating as the coats seems to be different colors when you shine a light at it. Thanks for all your efforts to explain the focal reducer. What I'm looking for is a focal reducer from Canon 5D to Canon 7D which has an APS-C sensor. What focal reducer brand would you recommend? BR Martin J.
@TLDR_filmmaker
@TLDR_filmmaker 6 жыл бұрын
Hey Martin! Thank you so much for checking out the video and the kind words! Unfortunately it is not possible to have a focus reducer from a Canon FF to a Canon APS-C, the reason for this is because both of these mounts have the exact same flange distance to the sensor. In order for a Focal reducer to work you need to adapte a lens that has a longer flange distance to a camera that has a shorter flange distance. Sorry to be the bearer of the bad news :( Thanks again for stopping by, check back every Wednesday for something new!

Greetings S4k Films! Thank you so much for checking out the video and commenting! Are you referring to the Rokinon full manual or newer AF versions? If its the full manual rokinons, I have no trouble with it because I never updated my firmware on my GH5 and Viltrox, it worked out of the box so I saw no need to fix anything. The problem is Panasonic has changed something with its new firmware 2.3, Viltrox is aware of this and are working on a firmware fix to combat whatever it is that Panasonic did. For reference, I am still operating GH5 firmware 2.2 and my Viltrox is 2.1. I would check every so often on the Viltrox sight and see when they have a working update to work alongside the GH5 ver. 2.3 Hope this helps! Thanks for the great review. I just got mine from China. Did a quick test with Sigma 18-35 and 17-50mm lenses and I can't seem to get infinity focus when using anything below ~30mm focal length on either lenses. There seems to be no way to adjust the optics unlike Viltrox. Pretty disappointing....

Hey Johnny! I haven't tried it just yet as my commlite adapter reaches infinity with my lenses, but on the Commlite there seems to be more than one screw on the camera mount side that would tighten the optic inside the adapter. Once you loosen the screws and are able to move the optics, look at the adapter from the Lens side and rotate the optics clockwise to get your infinity focus closer to the mark on the lens. I will take a look at my adapter later tonight to see if I can think of any other way to rotate the optics to achieve infinity focus. Hope this helps!

Thanks! There are two screws. I think the silver screw is for making a 'hard stop' when mounting the adapter onto the camera. I'm not so sure about the black screw. It's really tiny. I removed it completely and tried to rotate the optics but it didn't work. Sent Commlite an email hopefully they have a solution. Thanks for your help!

Have you found a way to adjust infinity focus on the commlite adapter?
@TLDR_filmmaker
@TLDR_filmmaker 5 жыл бұрын
Hey hey Paul! Thank you so much for checking out this video and asking a question! Similar to other boosters, the optic can be rotated to adjust infinity focus. There's a tiny screw on the camera side of the adapter that you'll want to loosen, and then using a grippy cloth (so you don't damage the optic) you can try to rotate the optic with your hand, it might be hard because usually there is a type of breakable glue down in the optics screw threads. Once its loosened you can then make your adjustments and testing which direction you need to go to get to infinity focus. I have to say that I don't know if the optic will be slightly loose once the glue is broken up, it shouldn't, but just know that could be a thing. Hope this helps! Hey Clayton! Thank you so much for checking out the video and asking a question! While I don't have personal experience with it, I don't see why this adapter won't work with the g85, there have been reports that the Viltrox EF-M2 works with the g85 so I would assume this Commlite will work with it as well. Generally speaking when it comes to electronic controls like aperture and IBIS, the adapters should be fine, it's when you account for how well the AF works, you may get a different story. So if Electronic operation is all you need and not AF performance, then these electronic adapters will generally do the trick! Hope this helps! Hey hey Jaya! Thank you so much for checking out this video and commenting! Since you're a beginner and working and learning the camera on a budget. I would actually suggest to start off with some cheap prime lenses so you can learn the craft and build up your work, maybe even make some money, and save up to get the Sigma 18-35. Probably one of the best budget ways to go is to get a passive Booster and Vintage prime lenses. There are quite a few to choose from and I laid out a video about this topic here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/b4LNc4tqmrp1Zqs If you don't want to go this specific round and would rather buy some newer manual lenses designed to go right onto the GH5, you can check out some lenses from 7artisans, starting with the 25mm range. *7artisan 25mm f1.8* rover.ebay.com/rover/1/711-53200-19255-0/1?mpre=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.ebay.com%2Fsch%2Fi.html%3F_from%3DR40%26_trksid%3Dm570.l1313%26_nkw%3D7artisans%2Bmft%2B25mm%26_sacat%3D0%26LH_TitleDesc%3D0%26_osacat%3D0%26_odkw%3D7artisans%2Bmft&campid=5338250782&toolid=20008 For a GH5, the 25mm will act like a full frame 50mm, this is a great place to start working and you can film a lot of great stuff with just this one lens. You can then further go lower with one of these focal lengths near the 12 or 17mm (MFT terms) which acts like a 24 or 35mm (Full Frame Terms). So now you have one wider and one normal. You can film a lot of things with just these lenses, after all this it will be up to you if you'd like to get something more telephoto, but I would say wait on those lenses because a wide and normal are good starting points as you learn and develop your skills. I generally advice against buying expensive lenses when you start learning because an expensive lens won't make your videos look any better. Start with cheaper budget lenses (these all perform quite well) and learn how to use lighting and sound (if you need sound) for your videos. Once you learn how all of these things play together, then you can start saving up and buying more expensive gear that will fit your needs. Because right now as a beginning, you're not sure what your needs are, so best not to waste money buying the wrong type of lens until you know exactly why you need that lens, light, microphone, etc. Hope this helps! Thanks again for stopping by! Stay safe, healthy, and I’ll see you in the next one!

Hello בדיקה ואישורים ! Thank you so much for checking out this video and commenting! There is a fix that a viewer found that seems to have worked for people that weren't able to get to infinity with tightening the Viltrox Optic. Essentially for the viltrox you have to unscrew the optic completely out and you will some some glue inside the adapter that you can scratch away a little bit so that the optic can tighten further. The ROI on it just doesn't make sense to me especially in videography. The presumption among shutterbugs?!?!? That the standards are the same?!?!? If so---wrong, dog breath! Thanks for trying. There is some overlap, for sure. But in critical ways video is a different critter. Thanks for, as the brothers say, keeping it real for us vidiots. Hey hey again William! It's been awhile! Thank you so much for checking out this older video and commenting! I agree, I feel the S1 so far are hitting more photographers than it is for filmmakers. I for one am still gonna be gunning for it at some point for both photos and videos (primarily videos). Photography and Cinematography definitely have their differences for sure, and of course some principles the exact same. The major thing we have in common is chasing for lights to get to the shutter speed we want, photos are definitely more light hungry in a single area while we videographers are light hungry for a large large performing area. All fascinating stuff from both disciplines. I've actually relayed to Viltrox (the booster adapter brand I use) to see if they will ever make a x64 booster, I refuse to pay the metabone price. But I definitely would like to have a x64 at some point... however there are some rumors about the GH6 having a unlockable S35 sensor inside. If this is true.... I am beyond excited! The GH6 would be a indie cinema monster!

@@TLDR_filmmaker I would buy a GH6 with those specs everyday and twice on Sunday. (Actually, I don't do any business on Sunday). don't get either one (imo) because image sharpness is more important than speed. if not metabones (better sharpness), I'd recommend a dumb adapter or a native lens, just remember that you may have to stand farther back to frame the same, and that larger aperture means shallower depth of field bc slight forward/backward subject points going through fringes of the aperture don't meet up at the same point on image sensor like they would through center of the lens

Did you notice that you didn't have that the vignette from the sigma 18-35 1.8 (when wide open) that you mentioned in another video when you used this adapter rather then the viltrox? Plus would you say the committee adapter is safer because it fits the lense better and is less likely to wiggle around?

Hey Joel! Thank you so much for checking out the video and commenting! I didn't notice the vignette, but to be honest everything I've shot with the Viltrox and the Sigma I didn't notice the vignette either. Because I primarily deal with narrative films, the soft vignette is something that people usually add in post production just to take the harshness off the edges, so it's definitely something that doesn't bother me. As far as which one is safer? I honestly still prefer the Viltrox because the optics are just a hair better and their firmware team seems to be quite active since the launch of this adapter. For the wiggle on the Viltrox I simply add some small pieces of clear tape on the camera side of the mount and it snugs it up nicely for me. Hope this helps! Thanks again for stopping by! Hey hey Andrew! Depending on the lens, it will register on the camera as either f/1.2 or f/1.3. Hope this helps! Thanks so much for checking out the video and asking a question! Check back every Wednesday for something new!

Thanks for reporting back, appreciate it. I'm torn on what adaptor to go with. Seems the Cammlite is a bit better bet than the Viltrox but still, Metabones has the track record.....

You are most welcome! I can't confirm this but someone had said in the past that Commlite isn't all that great with firmware updates. I've actually been surprised that Viltrox has put out 3 updates since its release into the US Market and also connecting with you guys as well. Theres definitely something to be said for Metabones that they have a much better equipped firmware team to keep up with updates. In one of my video I feel this will be the deciding factor for Viltrox, if they can keep up at a decent enough pace. I hope they do!
@ScottBell
@ScottBell 6 жыл бұрын
Yeah the amount Viltrox updates is encouraging. I just had a Metabones come across my plate for $500 CAD which is a great price, so going to return the Viltrox and go that route I think.

Id say if you're doing lots of pro work monthly, then there's something to be said for paying a little more for reliability and how fast they update firmware for newer cameras. Another potential route is to keep the viltrox (assuming its been working just fine with your electronic lenses) and buy a completely passive speedbooster. When I filmed my first feature with Rokinon Primes, I bought a cheap generic EF-MFT booster adapter and I've continued to use it to this day with my manual lenses. Not sure what the prices are like over there in Canada for those, but it would most likely be the most economical approach. Hope this helps! Greetings from the states!

What I don't understand is people who refuse to use a simple UV/daylight filter (even a high quality one) to protect the front element of their very expensive lens because it will compromise the image quality, and yet will happily put a sophisticated optic like a speedbooster on the other end of it.

Hey hey Chris! Thank you so much for checking out this video and commenting! This video is a bit old and I was just reviewing it as the Viltrox served me quite well. However I released a video this year where I have now completely decided to stop using speedboosters. Part of it is because of what you stated, but also because of the principle lenses I use mainly being Sigma Art APS-C lenses. They are so good natively, no reason to compromise it. Now what I really want is an adapter with a good drop in variable ND filter. Kipon announced there's but the price point is a bit off in my opinion ($450 some dollars, no booster optics). I hope we see one from Viltrox, I use their non-booster active adapter now ($130) if they came out with one with a drop in Vari ND filter for like $150, I'd be on it! Thanks again for stopping by and I’ll see you in the next one!

You don't remember if the viltrox has a warranty!!!. Maybe since you have the viltrox, and are doing a comparison review, you might want to take the 3 minutes to find out. If both adapters are basically the same then why not go with the less expensive one?
@TLDR_filmmaker

Hey hey Perry! Thank you so much for checking out this video and commenting! Yeaup, since this video is quite old, Viltrox back then wasn't as big of a heavy hitter and I had purchased the Viltrox from a 3rd party seller. Things were different back then but now Viltrox has a large department to handle defects. Both adapters are different as I show in the way it handle sharpness. I personally prefer the Viltrox over the Commlite after using it for a few years now. Viltrox is very active with its firmware updates. Commlite is nearly non-existent. So this being a 3 year old video, I say Viltrox has won out. Thanks again for stopping by! Stay safe, healthy, and I’ll see you in the next one!

Well, I've already ordered my Viltrox EF-M2 because of your review. So, hopefully I should be good to go. As soon as I get it, I will rent some Canon lenses from lensrental.com. If it works well, I'll probably end up buying the lens from Lensrental. I did that with a Panasonic 50mm lens.

Hey hey again VFX Todd! Both of these adapters are so similar that I can't really recommend one over the other, at the end of the day they will both do the job depending on your video needs. I'm excited that you were able to snag a Viltrox, its really done very well for me. What kind of lenses are you thinking about pairing up with it from Lensrentals? I've used them in the past and they are great!

Interesting and unfortunate, hopefully Viltrox will update their firmware eventually to allow Z-cam. It confuses me that we have a lens mount that is designed to work a specific way and either lens companies or camera companies don't follow the design so that everything works... why is that? I don't get the point.

I wonder wether it works with modified EF-S lenses. Viltrox EF-M2 sucks with those.
@TLDR_filmmaker
@TLDR_filmmaker 6 жыл бұрын
Hey hey again Maciej! Thats a good question, unfortunately I don't really have an answer. The only true EF-S mounted lens I have is the 18-55 kit lens that came with my old Canon T3i. I'm going to assume, though, that Canon EF-S lenses may have a weird code in their chip that makes it awkward to work with adapters. All the third party APS-C lenses have a EF Mount and probably just uses the EF chip set to communicate. Canon being Canon, I wouldn't be surprised if their EF-S lenses had some kind of extra code to keep things proprietary in their systems. Hopefully as this Commlite rolls out to more stores that people can comment here if their Canon EF-S lenses work! Thanks again for checking out the video and commenting!

Hey James! Thank you so much for checking out this video and commenting! I will say, even though I have both adapters and use them constantly, I have my Viltrox permanently on my Sigma 18-35mm (My principle narrative lens) while the commlite sits with my Sigma 50-150mm (My special shot lens that doesn't get deployed as often). If I had my choice for my 50-150mm, id probably go with the viltrox again for consistency and just that hair amount of sharpness wide open! Thank you so much again for stopping by! Hey hey Uncaged! Thank you so much for checking out the video and commenting! I know right?! Unfortunately this lens is pretty much the "go to" for anyone doing narrative film work (what I primarily do). If I was doing anything with event videography I would definitely have a different lens setup to test this with. That being said, if you're looking for an adapter that works, any EF lens that transfers EXIF data will work with this adapter in terms of Aperture adjustment and IBIS for Panasonics MFTs Cameras, Olympus cameras can get funky. If Autofocus is your primary concern for photography and image quality, then I would suggest not going any adapter routes, best to get native lenses instead. Hope this helps! @TLDR_filmmaker
@TLDR_filmmaker 6 жыл бұрын
Hey FlamecomMartian! Thank you so much for checking out the video and asking a question! While I don't have a G7 to personally test, I do believe this adapter should work fine as people have used the Viltrox successfully on G7's. In terms of aperture control, you should be fine, if you're looking for AF performance for photography, that may be a different story depending on your lens choices and how the G7 calculates focus. Hopefully someone can chime in if they've used this adapter on a G7. Hope this helps!

@TLDR_filmmaker 6 жыл бұрын
Greetings Frol! Thank you so much for checking out the video and commenting! In theory the Viltrox should work with the new Panasonic G9, unfortunately I don't have that camera to confirm 100%. However if photography is what you're after with good AF performance. Native Panasonic lenses will always outperform an adapter setup. These adapters I feel are more for filmmakers who need to control a lenses aperture and IBIS, while photographers may find these adapters slower than what they are used to with native lenses. Hope this helps!

Hey vkallmünzer! Thank you so much for checking out this video and asking a question! While I don't have personally experience with this adapter on a G7, in theory there should be no problems in terms of communicating to the lenses aperture. If you're wondering about AF performance for photographer, it may vary depending on which lenses you mount onto it. If you mainly do video work and just need aperture control and having a booster optic for FOV, then this adapter shouldn't have a problem. I have not ran into any problems with this adapter yet on my GH4 or GH5 and my Sigma 18-35 + 50-150mm lenses. Hope this helps! Thank you so much for stopping by!
