Just two years ago, she wasn’t even eligible to participate in elections. But after the recent polls, Maryam Nawaz, daughter of former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, has become the Chief Minister of Punjab, making history as the first woman to hold this position in any province of Pakistan. The Punjab Assembly, with its central importance in the country’s electoral politics, now boasts the largest number of seats held by her party, the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), without any support from other parties. Her selection as the Chief Minister was straightforward, without any complications during the assembly session on Monday. However, until 2022, participating in electoral politics was the biggest challenge for Maryam Nawaz. In 2018, she faced a seven-year sentence in the Avenfield case related to concealing her father Nawaz Sharif’s London property. She was convicted for “aiding and abetting” her father in hiding the property. Additionally, she was declared ineligible to participate in elections for ten years. But in 2022, the Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM), a coalition of opposition parties, ousted Imran Khan’s government through a vote of no confidence. Her uncle, Shehbaz Sharif, became the new Prime Minister. In the same year, the Islamabad High Court quashed her sentence in the Avenfield case, allowing her to re-enter electoral politics. Thus, in the recent general elections, she stepped into electoral politics for the first time. Before 2016-17, Maryam Nawaz was not actively involved in practical politics. Her attention was primarily focused on revamping her father’s party’s social media wing and engaging with youth. However, after her father’s removal from the Prime Minister’s office in 2017 due to the Panama case, Maryam Nawaz became more politically active. She went from being a vocal critic of the establishment to becoming the chief organizer and vice president of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N). Eventually, she abandoned her confrontational stance during the PTI government and embarked on a swift journey to the Chief Minister’s office. Some political analysts attribute this transformation to the time when Saudi Arabia facilitated a meeting between Nawaz Sharif and his family members, including Maryam Nawaz, in the aftermath of the 1999 military coup. “Those were the days when Nawaz Sharif used to discuss politics for hours with his wife Kulsoom Nawaz and daughter Maryam,”
