6:40 to 7:30 absolutely slaps every time. Also good choice of recording! The whole Seattle Symphony set of Dutilleux's orchestral works is my favorite.

It is a great set, but I'd argue the Orchestre de Paris with Semyon Bychkov conducting Sym. #2, Metaboles, and this piece is definitive. Give it a go!

What a discovery! And what a unique musical world he lived in.

that the score is so hard to read at the beginning shows how colorful he orchestrated this. These broken gestures falling down at the end are easy to imagine but hard to get it done so as we hear here

This is really cool! I’ve never heard this composer before. However, looking at the score I am noticing places where the orchestra isn’t performing what is written. For example there are several flutter tongue flute passages where the audible flutes are just playing the notes and not using an exaggerated fluttering effect which is called for by the score. Other than that I really enjoyed this piece!

This, and the parallel fifths. Otherwise OK.

@@Contrapunctus1984 Why would parallel fifths matter in this harmonic language?

Yeah, this conductor is kind of a fraud and this set really disappointed me. Check out BBC Phil's Dutilleux set under Tortelier. WAY better!

Modern is a big word.. modern is Hendrix’s Star spangled banner, or Debussy’s La mer, a little kid could love and / or hate one or the other, or both …what do you mean modern? I wonder how can someone be exposed particularly to this specific work, it’s so rare.

it’s atonal and dissonant without sounding like gibberish. hard line to walk. very interesting as well
@seanmaccarthy-grant36043 жыл бұрын
Not atonal. Uses a definite harmonic scale throughout, not just for timbral purposes. But you're right, it does toe the line lmao

Music in the spirit of the 19th century ...
@GJYYNGII2 жыл бұрын
This is music of 20th century, not 19th. If this were music from the 19th century, then it wouldn't been made during the 1800s. But then again, contemporary music wasn't a thing, and people would find this to be unsettling.

Why did he add that Interlude?

Because he wanted to challenge Villa-Lobos
