I think one of the few exceptions to this rule is if you want to main a different class of weapon. The best example i can think of is buying the Archer as an engineer. While the base weapons are great you aren't going to do much to max's and nothing to vehicles with them. As an engineer (depending on play style) you can often find yourself around or in a cluster of vehicles, both friendly and hostile repairing and what not. It's nice to be able to damage them and pick off infantry in the distance.

people never mention that by sticking with the same weapon you receive a lot of certs for getting the auraxium for the weapon. you get 200 certs with 1159 kills plus you get certs along the journey to that total.

I totally agree. Some ppl that i know wanted to join me on PlanetSide 2. Once in the game, they were getting rekt and thought that it was because the basic weapon was bad. I told them to NOT buy new infantry weapon right now and cert things like the med/eng tool, nanoweave armor, etc. And for armor play, maybe the fire suppression and HEAT/AP Canon for MBT or Lightning (So they can be good in infantry AND armor fight; which mean more cert gain). They didnt listen to me and bought a new weapon anyway and STILL get rekt by others and complain that the game is BS...

Here's my two cents. For the first amount of certs I got when I started my account waaaay back when I bought the ASP-30 Grounder. Yes, it is indeed a weapon. I got an insane amount of aircraft kills with that thing that I ended up climbing battle ranks relatively quick. I remember I used to be a AA turret at almost every fight. I specifically went to places where I knew there was aircraft so that I could accomplish this. Now of course it is definitely better to upgrade abilities and whatnot but the ASP-30 Isn't a terrible investment. At a 650 cert price tag its pretty cheap compared to other weapons. ESFs are also quite a big issue in PS2 right now with all the "cancer" loadouts to farm infantry, but I never had to deal with that since If I saw one I'd just switch to heavy assault and scare it off and/or shoot it out of the sky. It's understandably better to get upgrades but getting a lock-on rocket for aircraft can be really useful early on.

I think you went a little bit overboard trying to make buying weapons seem like a bad idea. It more or less is at the very beginning, but it is definitely valuable to have different weapons that are better in different situations available. Don't blow your bank on weapons at the beginning but definitely start collecting a versatile arsenal at _some_ point.

Agreed, agreed. What I run into a lot is people complaining the game is pay 2 win. They feel they MUST buy weapons to be even remotely useful, and that is all I am trying to dispel here. You should start buying weapons when you have enough currency and enough things unlocked.

I come down hard on buying weapons because so many people carelessly spend on them. But if you have your ability/armor/tool in a good spot, spend away on weapons!

I agree to a point. The starting weapons are awesome, except for the VS and TR semi-auto rifles. Imho they suck even with the ballistic computer attachment. I'm more of a bolt-action guy and on my TR character I bought the M77-B as soon as I was able and I do not regret my decision. Using the semi-auto rifle just isn't effective for my play style, and for many others I would guess as well. Ultimately it's up to the individual.

Looking back at some of the videos you created. This still remains one of the most important videos for anyone planning on playing Planetside 2; It allows new players to set far more useful goals for their certs (class upgrades, which are the real game changer), and at the same time mentions there are no hitscan weapons, something super important for anyone who's coming from an FPS that isn't Arma III. Thankfully this was never a pitfall for me. I remember starting Planetside 2 for the first time almost 3 years ago. I was doing a whole bunch of random gallivanting on the noob map, then I decided to look at what I could spend all those certs on. Naturally the first thing I did was check out the weapons. Planetside being a free to play game I was expecting there to be a massive grind to unlock any new weapon, so I was looking for a goal to work towards. But I'm an RPG player first and foremost. Pouring over stats and figures is what I'm used to whenever I want to choose a new weapon. I was first very confused. I was expecting to see weapons that were better than my starter gun, yet they all seemed far worse. I spent a whole two hours just looking at all the weapon stats until it hit me that none of the weapons were meant to be upgrades, but were specializations.

beginner should try all the weapon he/she wants to use and feel it at the end just delete the character at lvl15 and start over with other weapons or give it a go little more if you like the weapon just to see how other weapon works and feels

I've never bought anything with cash in PS2, I grind for it all. I still end up with about 1000 certs every few days. I play mainly NC, they had me from the start with the SAW and it's still my go to weapon. It's a bit of an unorthodox weapon, but I use the E6 lgm for NC as well. It's not that the other weapons are worse, you just have to find which ones your good with. For example, when I fight against TR I mainly stick with the SAW, but fighting Vanu I swith to higher rate of fire guns like the E6.

totally agree with you with one reservation. If you are not buying weapons because you want a tactical advantage but instead to play a certain playstyle it's fine. In my Case I'm a new player who has been playing for less than a week and am only BR 20 And i've bought three different weapons, one of them both faction and class specific, (The Dragoon, the Annhilator, and the Commissioner) and i haven't regretted any of them.

I bought the VS Serpent and the game became a much better experience for me overall, using that and the drifter jets I found my ideal play style which the starting light assault weapon didn't fully provide for me.

But it is true, if the weapons that exist are not working for you, go trial some weapons and then buy the one that feels good to you.

As equal as the weapons are, any high ranking dude still has a huge advantage if they're running high level abilities and especially, implants. There is simply no substitute for a sweaty 4kd heavy with maxed out assimilate and battle hardened.

I'm a relatively new player to planetside. I play the VS and I play a lot of light assault and infiltrator. I have to say, the starting weapon for light assaults (Solstice VE3) is a joke. After 10 meters the bullets go all over the place and the gun becomes a peashooter. So I bought a Pulsar C. Best decision of my life. Bullets hit harder, recoil is manageable. Same thing goes for the infiltrators. Semi auto snipers are really weak in this game IMO, so if I want to snipe properly I have to invest in a bolt action sniper.

The knowledge and wisdom of how to fight in Planetside is what makes a difference between an effective player and a lost player. It's a 'Great Filter' that if you don't learn from harsh experiences or seek these external sources, you can be expected to just be frustrated/not having fun with the game and leave. It is hoped that these works can be made to reach former and newer players to reconsider playing Planetside (and even further games like it) if you flip the mental switch of reactive to proactive learning from any source about the game to basically be better than you once were. From there, you are on the path to being a better player and hopefully, having fun while doing so and that this keeps you interested!

I started playing Planetside 2 a few days ago, and then suddenly in-game the mouse pointer wouldn't highlight anything. I combed the net for solutions and couldn't find any. Lots of mentions of use of the "Alt" key, but nothing in any of the forums helped. The game is unplayable for me. In order to click the "Play" button from the character select menu, I have to move the mouse like 3 inches or so above, and slightly to the left of it. Other buttons like the "settings" cogwheel are for some reason impossible for me to select. It's like the cursor position is not aligned with what is actually being highlighted. When I first open the game, before logging in, the cursor is aligned perfectly. Once inside the game however, it is all jumbled up. I have no idea what to do but I can't play the game.

What do you think about the 345 certs Battle Rifle that is pretty much identical in it's stats in every faction? I buyed it and i do not regret it because that is the exact type of weapon that fits me the most, and also there is no starter weapon like that, i mean sure you have the Sniper from the TR an the Laser faction, but these have only scopes and really are more suited for long range, while you can put a Reflex-sight on the Battle Rifle and do well in more close medium-ranges, also you can attach a grenade launcher (which i think is goddamn badass and i love it) that helps me personally at even closer ranges to defend myself quickly, but ye what do you think, was it a waste of certs? (i started a week ago)

There's probably 1 outlier - the gauss SAW. It's an amazing gun, especially in competent hands, but it lacks versatility of other starter weapons. So NC heavies may consider something with a bit more fire rate and shorter reload. Though if you can work around these problems, then oh boy.

Not exactly, the attachments on weapons determines how one player engages another. If they both turn a corner and spray at each other at the same time, then sure, but if one spots another from a distance, they have a high chance of winning if they can sight in and reliably hit them.

Pay-to-win is on a continuum, from Clash Royale to Overwatch. I'd say that just two years ago, Planetside 2 was one of the most pay to win games in the world, but now it's closer to TF2 where buying kit expands your options but you can enjoy the game without it. Vehicles and base building still take big cert drops to break into, but at least you can now play infantry without getting raped by older players who not only have map & game knowledge but objectively better gear.

There was a valley between release and when we got these new infantry loadouts to everyone that really made the new player experience even rougher since the inequality of game knowledge and gear was widening further and further to not really give new players much of a learning space and equivalent equipment to be on the same footing. Glad it has changed now, and vehicles should be next on the chopping block with this vehicle update coming sometime this end of year (could be end of August or later, we havent heard when it is supposed to land but most of the real balancing aspects have been done last time we heard).

No G2A lock on yet. You still have the dumbfire for blatantly close aircraft and you have the rocklet rifle on Light Assault which has proximity lock on effect for supportive damage (more than small arms but not as large as launchers). You also have basic flak cannon on one arm for max which can help deter (but not kill unless pilots are really slow to react). You have options, and realistically speaking, it would be good to see the G2A lockon be unlocked, but right now it is not.

No lock-on launchers yet. But they did significantly reduce aircraft's ability to engage ground targets. So the A2G spam is not as bad.

There's a few reason why most players would never use some weapons over other because some of them have the problem of being jack of all trades and master of none which SOME of the starting weapons have. Further more, most new player would never be able to run infiltrator other than only using them as a sniper, since they do not have smg available. Other points are factor like implants and medical kits, repair tools and medic tool that are undeniably better in higher rank plays than in New players.

No one will deny that certain weapons shine best in specific scenarios, but the key message of this video by Cyrious, is that all starter weapons are competitive for new players and you dont need to pick a new weapon up to specifically be a better player. You need to mainly learn how to fight on the maps, teamwork, experience of movement etc which are bigger concerns than weapon loadout alone. Medkits are luxuries and so are upgraded tools, they help provide the difference between life and death in high efficiency fighting, but for actual fighting, these things can be done from the get go and are not the crux of the issue, the crux is working with allies if you wish to last longer than the other sides all chaotically fighting for a base or 'objective'.

I have to disagree, some weapons are almost necessary to be effective (even at the start) Ones I WOULD say new players should get ASAP (after *SOME* upgrades) (From the perspective of a NC Player) I recommend getting level 4/5 of Medic tool & Engi Tool, Level 2 Medkits, Nano weave armor 2/3/4 on ALL Classes. Phoenix Rocket Launcher - My First Weapon Purchase, and I never regretted it. (No equivalent on TR/VS) Blitz OR Cyclone (SMG) - My Second Purchase, Worth it every time as Infiltraitor needs a CQC weapon (Fast Firing or High Damage SMG)

This Video is going to my friend who whines and complains that this game is Pay-2-Win. He kept trying to tell me that the only reason someone was able to peel away all his health like that is because they had bought a gun that he didnt have. Attachments are terrific. I recommend purchasing a 1x Reflex sight, and if available, for any weapon you don't hipfire most of the time get a forward grip, compensator, and high velocity ammo, if those options are available for that weapon.

There is perhaps ONE case here where I'd disagree with this, and that is when it comes to weapons that are so far divergent from the defaults, they actually change the classes core ''game play loop'' to a very substantial extent. Granted, this probably only really applies to the Infiltrator, due to how a lot of it's roles and the usability of it's abilities rely upon what kind of weapon you are using: You want the best secondary you can allow yourself if you go Stalking. And you aren't really the smartest fellow if you try to go for close range infiltration with a sniper rifle. Just switching from a semi-auto to a bolt-action enforces a substantial change in behavior.

Everybody who says "the starter weapons are the best" is wrong. Maybe the best for YOUR playstyle, but not for everybody. I am suck with the starters, but far better with the average-balanced NS weapons. Don't get me wrong, I too say that you must concentrate to your abilities and tools first, but for me just 1 new weapon made a surpisingly better gameplay overall... and I say this after 800+ hours and with a new faction character.

Hey Cyrus it's me again we had a nice discussion in one of your past planetside 2 videos (why play PS2 in 2017 I think it was) Just as a reminder I'm the guy who keeps comming back to PS2 only to leave every time because of certain reasons Anyway let's get right into this video and my problem with it As a new player starts planetside 2 or any other shooter for that matter they obviously want to get guns, why is that? *It's because having variety is exciting* I remember buying the commissioner as my first weapon because not only do I like hard hitting sidearms but also because I wanted to play the infiltratior more offensively and not just as a Frontline sniper People kept telling me to play medic and engineer instead so I can get lots of certs and then buy stuff but being a heal/revive/repair grunt to a lvl 200 veteran just isn't fun You revive 5 players and then you die to a freaking gunship shot, over and over Do you get lots of certs for doing these things? Yes you do, relatively But is it fun? No... Hell no. Especially if ones being "forced" into it to get a decent amount of certs This leads me back to the infiltratior, after buying the commie I noticed that it just isn't enough and I wanted to have more fun playing an assassin *especially after watching wrels videos of him coming up from behind killing 5 players and then going back into the shadows* So I bought the Sirius, a high RoF smg and let me tell you I had a blast using it. I got really really good at it aswell, killing up to 50 people before dying in certain scenarios But again, I suffered from a loss of certs because I wasn't doing the mundane healing/repairing tasks Now to a slightly different scenario as to why I kept buying weapons *The max trooper* As a new player at around rank 15 I noticed how useful maxes can be most of them dual wielding either anti-air flak guns and just annihilating aircrafts or being the meat grinder in close corridors with their dual miniguns I wanted to be one of them, so i started saving up for another flak cannon (cause the one you get for free ain't enough) and also some freaky vanu laser guns for infantry At this point I started losing interest because I needed 3000 certs to get them after already spending 2000 and more (because I DID spend certs upgrade things) With the stock max I didn't have much fun the two different stock weapons aren't a challenge against an akimbo shotty or minigun max The bottom line is... People are curious with an ever lasting itch for new and exciting things (in this case all the fun toys in PS2) And when you realize just how dumb and boring the road to that point is, you fade away Nice video though I just wish I saw it 2 years ago lol

Thanks man. And yes, if you want the variety, I highly recommend buying weapons. What I am more combating with these videos, is that people feel like they HAVE to buy a weapon to be competitive, and that just is not true. By all means, by a weapon if you want to use a different weapon. But if you feel like the grind is to long, just ignore all the extra weapons, because you don't need them. And then there really isn't much of a grind in this game.

Glad I caught this video, I just started last week and I was saving for one of those 1000 cert guns. I have a few questions though. First off, how do I work this Gauss SAW? I expected a ton of recoil but that thing is just ridiculous. The fire rate as well is a lot slower than I thought it would be, and I get killed frequently in one on one fights even if I get the drop on someone. As for hitting anyone at range or effective suppressing fire, forget about it. I don't understand exactly what I'm doing wrong. Another thing for me is the rocket launcher. The Shrike is alright against infantry, but vehicles seem to just shrug off my shots and I can't really hit anything that flies with it. I was planning to buy at least 1 rocket launcher with homing capability but after watching this I'm kind of worried. I can't really hit the broad side of a barn with this thing unless I'm close range, and being close range to a bunch of tanks or a spawner is bad news. What should I do? One more purely noob question, I bound by switch weapon command to mouse wheel down, but I can only switch between the main weapon and the pistol, not the rocket launcher or anything the medic or engineer have. Is there a way I can change that?

So, on the Gauss SAW. While it is an extremely competitive weapon. That doesn't make it a very good newbie friendly weapon. :( It is very high risk, high reward. If you don't like it, I recommend buying the GD-22s, if I am not mistaken that weapon costs 250 certs, so it won't break your bank, and it is more new player friendly. A lock-on launcher is a nice thing to have. If you want to spend any money. I recommend buying the Elite Recruit bundle. It comes with the NS-Annihilator. A weapon that locks on to tanks and aircraft. Otherwise you could buy just the annihilator with certs. It does not have a dumbfire capability though. I am not sure on the switch weapon thing. Make sure your mouse wheel down is bound to "cycle weapons" and not just your pistol. But that one I am not to familiar with. I use my number keys just above my left hand on wasd, I find that easy enough. So not to familiar with how to set that up.

I suck with Carv for my playstyle watchmen is better. SMG infiltrator is another playstyle, that you can unlock if you want, but you start with very competitive play styles. You don't need an SMG to be competitive. C4 on light assault is a big upgrade for sure. Again though, it doesn't make you more competitive shooting. Gauss SAW is the best weapon in the game, but bad for noobs for sure. GD-22 would be good.
