How American Is Your Car?

Contrary to what the average consumer may believe, there are no cars that are completely American made. Many vehicles made by American companies can contain some or even a significant amount of foreign parts. By contrast, some foreign cars can be assembled in factories in the United States. While the supply chain is partly responsible for making vehicle compositions complex, there are several indices made by groups that track the most American vehicles, such as the American University Kogod School of Business and Cars.com.

The simple answer is: "It's complicated!" I worked as a machine designer for over 35 years. The company I worked for, in the US, designed and fabricated the machines "in house". What we could not fabricate was sent out to local US companies. So it was "All American!", right? Except, no. Almost all of our purchased components like bearings, fasteners, air valves, gearboxes, electronic control devices were all made in foreign countries. Even some of our engineers, machinists, service people and even some company managers were foreign born. It truly is a global economy and has been for several decades.

No offence to OP but just because one's foreign born doesn't mean you should isolate them in this topic, they could have been kids moving here working and busting their balls to get that job no different than anyone else. There are also situations where the only option (at the time) was to bring someone in, for all we know they could be one of the top 5 people (or better than the locals) in their field. For workers all that should matter is fair pay and they have all the requirements to work, including paying their taxes.

You have a two items virtually identical one built in the US and one overseas costing a 1/3rd. 9/10 times the American consumer will buy the cheaper.

Car manufacturing has become a good & stable source of employment for people here in MX. If anything, we need more of it… not less. Mexico is the #3 nation for auto manufacturing. The Big 3 have been there for decades. Denso and KYB supply parts to auto manufacturers like Toyota and Mazda. They also have manufacturing facilities in Mexico along with Japanese quality control engineers that live there to ensure quality products.

Same on my Legacy model too. Really, it's not strictly about the demestic economy, although that is what we see here immediately, it is truly a Global Marketplace. The supply chain really shows how inadequate the planning was on how to prepare for things like a global pandemic.

There are cars whose parts entirely come from nations that are high wage nations .For example Toyota cars get their transmissions from Japan, some parts from Germany and the UK, all nations that are developed. It is true that for some brands like GM and Ford however, get plenty of supplies from Mexico where wages are much much lower

Big difference between American made and American assembled. Honda is the most American made manufacturer, Toyota is second. Being, they use more American made parts and American made raw materials than other manufacturers. Read a report several years ago that stated Toyota spent over $32 billion on American raw materials for their vehicles that calendar year. GM, Ford, and Ram use parts made as cheaply as possible in Mexico and Canada, which are shipped to the US for assembly. Hence, why they are routinely rated as the least reliable vehicles. That said, the 4Runner and Land Cruiser are the two top vehicles on the road, both made with Japanese parts in Japan, and dominate reliability ratings.

General Motors recently closed their Canadian plant. General Motors of course is the least American car company, it was created by buying dozens of Canadian car companies and closing them. A hard pill for Canadians to swallow having all of their companies bought up by a company that took them south of the border, now completely.

With the former Ford Crown Victoria, many people saw it an all-American car, which was actually made in Canada. Arguably Canada is part of North America, though not American.

There's a historical reason that cars made in Canada are treated as domestically produced in the US. By the 1950s the big three auto makers controlled 100% of the Canadian market. However high tariffs ment that to sell 10 different models in both countries they had to produce them in both countries. This was very expensive so the auto industry lobbied both governments and had them negotiate a free trade deal covering cars and car parts called the Autopact. Over time the manufacturers consolidated production but about the same amount of manufacturing remained in Canada, only now instead of producing small amounts of a lot of different models, Canadian plants produce a large amount of a couple of models most of which is exported to the US and almost all of the rest of the cars sold in Canada are imported from the US.

Co-Motion is a small company in Oregon that prides itself on US made. However, the drive trains such as Shimano and Pinion are made elsewhere. The Gates carbon belt is, I believe, made in USA. The car company Tesla is also made in USA, but many of their electronic components rely on chips from China. They are trying to move more of their operation overseas. We, that is the USA, need(s) to have transportation which does not rely on stuff from other countries, even if that means paying a bit more. A bike has no electronic parts unless you add a dynamo which generates electricity for lights. The best one, like it or not, comes from Germany, the Son Nabendynamo.

I’m so glad that I bought a brand new car in June 2020. The Hyundai dealer was overstocked with vehicles at the time. I had my choice of over 20 different 2020 Sonatas to choose from. I got a fantastic deal, well below MSRP. Since then I have made an effort not to put any more miles on it than possible. In June 2022 the car will be two years old and have less than 15,000 miles on it. I plan on keeping it paying it off and sitting tight. I don’t even believe that their 2023 forecasts are accurate. I think we’re looking at 2024 maybe even 2025 before supply chains are anywhere near where they were before Covid, and even then things are never going to be what they were before Covid. I was just at CVS today and half of the shelves in the store were empty.There was no milk there was no orange juice, only two of the eight or nine items that I needed were there. So I’m not even gonna bother to shop at CVS until the supply chains are better. No sense wasting time gas or putting miles on my car for empty shelves.

Why is this important at all. I couldn’t care less where my car is assembled or how “national my car is” I still expect the same quality, same price and warranty. I disclose I live in a country that doesn’t produce cars so that may be why I don’t se the big deal about this.

I am canadian.....in 2007 I bought my CRV 2007 EXL....at Honda Plattsburgh NY....for $26 000 US....the Honda dealer in Montreal Québec want $37 000 CAN. Strangely enough...my CRV 2007 from Plattburgs NY is made in Japan with the ULEV certification for California rule.....the car was shipped from Japan by boat, delivered in LosAngels and shipped by train in NewYork state......my Plattsburg Honda dealer charge me $500 for transportation!!!!! The dealer in Montreal, the CRV was assembled in Ohio......with a $1200 transportation fees....go figure At this time....the canadian dollar was at par with the US dollar...... at the end, I had save $11 000.....for a better quality car made in Japan

American sports cars are almost always assembled in the US. Those companies usually put their best workers on those lines since those workers know what they're doing (eg the Camaro and Corvette factory in Kentucky).

VERY few brand new vehicles, if any, are 100% American anymore. My 2023 Mazda CX-30 was assembled in Salamanca, Mexico. 65% of the parts were made in Mexico, 25% were made in Japan, and only 5% were made in America. But it doesn't mean in any way it's a poorly built vehicle. There are a ton of these on the road and have been given very favorable reviews from car reviewers and owners.

@@minhaj23227 No, you see no US cars in Japan or EU, because most of US cars are simply horrible in comparision and dont take local customs or laws in cosidiration. You have some rare muscle car or pickup here, but that really because one is a fan of such cars and not because of needed a car and made an rational choice. US cars are simply too big, too inefficiente and have too low quality compared to what else you could buy in EU or Japan. Its same reason why Wallmart failed in Germany - they thought that same principle that works in US would work in Germany. It didnt. On other hand Lidl and Aldi are exploding in US, because they did bring new thing to US while changing some things to please local population. From US car makers only Ford did same in Europe - and guess what, it was actually very successful with it. And its same thing that German or Japanese carmakers do in US - lots of models popular in US arent even availeble in their home countries, they are tailored extra for US. And thats why they sell. Not because of some tarrif nonsense, that you can avoid by opening a factory there.

Very simplified for trade. Country of origin does not indicate the origin is purely from that region for USMCA. It merely indicates that the good passes one of the three test to be considered country of origin US, Mexico or Canada. The value content is typically never 100 percent derived from that area. Usually the three test are deminis, tariff shift and RVC to pass and be considered "100% origin" from one of the USMCA's country. There is currently debate with Mexico and Canada saying that if country of origin is from that region the value content that is foreign not from those area's should be ignored and considered 100% value from those regions. The US is stating the opposite that even if it passes those value contents must be broken down by foreign and not use just being country of origin determination. The topic is a lot more complex and the system to make it work would be a lot something bigger than people can even imagine.

Pretty much all modern cars aren’t 100% American made since a lot of things have been outsourced in the 70’s and 80’s to the present. All cars from the early 70’s and older are 100% American made since Ford for example made all the components at the Rouge plant in Dearborn Michigan where raw materials and ore went in one end of the Rouge plant and new cars and trucks came outside the other end of the Rouge plant.

As to look in one prospective as how American is your car as to say the Buick Envision is Made in China and is coming as good quality as a Japanese made vehicle.
