Is the UK space industry about to take off?

The failure of Virgin Orbit’s maiden commercial satellite launch from British soil, and the company’s subsequent filing for bankruptcy protection, may have seemed like a fatal blow for the U.K’s nascent space sector. But a range of companies hope to play a key role in the business of building, launching and operating satellites, a $281 billion industry which has been growing rapidly over the past decade.
Billionaire-backed companies like Elon Musk’s SpaceX, Jeff Bezos’s Blue Origin and Richard Branson’s Virgin Orbit have been revolutionising the space industry over the last decade, which has seen advances in re-usable rockets, the deployment of thousands of small communication satellites and new launch sites opened.
To find out how smaller U.K.-based firms are looking to compete, CNBC visited a spaceport being built in the far north of the Shetland Islands, an established satellite-builder and a start-up aiming to see one of its re-usable satellites finally make it into space.

Just googled it - India had requested the British government to stop handing them aid in 2001 and the so call aid is 12 million pounds a year to a British linked NGO and the commonwealth office programmes. I see no relevance in your comment as India does not need your aid ever since the 80s as most of her assistance came from the USSR in farming,science and healthcare. It seems like the aid is given of more of a bragging point for the British government which goes to show how desperate the British are to hold on to what was and no longer is (it was never theirs to begin with rofl) also to add insult to injury India is the 5th largest economy and will become the 3rd in about 15 years. What is one of the UK's single biggest issues that prevents the UK from being competitive is their weather alone. The UK will have a fraction of the usable launch days the U.S. has. Not to mention states like Florida are much better positioned for launching space craft into space. Sure, the UK can have a bit of a space industry for satellites. But by no means can it compete with countries like the U.S. The UK should do things for UK businesses. But if they have to try and compete to stay in business, then the UK will likely fail due to many circumstances out of their control. The way this UK space program has to try to stay in business is to try to find a niche market. But on a global scale, the U.S. is many decades ahead.
@brunol-p_g8800
@brunol-p_g8800 6 ай бұрын
The UK has a solution for this problem: Ascension Island. This British overseas territory is perfectly placed near the Equator and has already both a space monitoring station and a RAF airbase. The closest you are to the equator, the best. It is mostly the reason why the USA was launching from Florida and France is launching from French Guyana. But yes, as you said both the USA and France are many decades ahead of the UK on space matters.
@GalaxyFur
@GalaxyFur 6 ай бұрын
@@brunol-p_g8800 The only problem with that is that literally everything has to be shipped there by ship. Nothing is made on the Island. So from a financial point of view, it's not really feasible. Everything has to be shipped in across thousands of miles of open ocean. In Florida, everything is right there on site. Everything can be moved in by rail, truck, and ship. Plus the turnaround time is basically instant and won't take a month of travel time like it would with Ascension Island. The location and weather I agree are far better than what the UK has. But it again just creates a whole bunch of new issues trying to compete with the U.S. The U.S. has the holy grail of location, weather, transportation, manufacturing, expertise, money, etc... That's why I hope they aren't looking to "compete" with the U.S. but rather are focusing on core UK-specific needs or wants. Because they won't be able to compete with the U.S. in terms of running a business from a financial view. They can be a secondary backup certainly though for doing much smaller launch applications and trying to find a niche for themselves.

Aircraft lift-off in bad weather all the time and this is an air launched system. And they aren't competing with the US, Virgin is a US company, they are just selling launch sites to various companies.

First fix your 20% poverty rate and so many homeless and hungry population before dreaming of being superpower
@GalaxyFur
@GalaxyFur 5 ай бұрын
@@Judah_889@AnthonyDeMello958 All of the EU, Canada, Australia, Japan, New Zealand, Norway, Iceland, the UK, and more already recognize the U.S. as the world's sole superpower. All countries have poverty. And countries like the UK, for example, have a fast-growing poverty rate due to Brexit. So, the U.S. doesn't need to dream about being a superpower when it already is on the world stage. When it comes to space exploration, the U.S. leads the world. Also, the subject isn't about the U.S. being a superpower but whether or not the UK can compete against the U.S. in the space program. Hence, I said it isn't really possible since the U.S. has geographical, industrial, budget, and other advantages. So the UK is better off finding a niche market and doing things for its own benefit and just trying to help with advancing science in general for the whole world's benefit. The UK can play a role. But it shouldn't be looking at it as a competitive thing so much.

During the end of 2035, India will send it's own Space station in space. Then it will be all about India and China in the space war.

The UK manufactures nearly half of all small satellites, and around 25% of larger weather and intelligence ones. That's a large existing market that would probably appreciate not having to pay to ship their kit half way around the world to a launch site.
