6:30 How careless is this description? Did Korea invade Japan? Korea was the suffered country by Japanese imperialism in wartime. Japanese nagative sentiments toward Korean wave is completely came from their nationalism for returning colonial period and histrorical modificationism. As a South Korean, everytime for seeing these careless and lazy western journalism easily make Korean Gov to the world's most competive Gov which has no impossible, is hilarious.

the success of Korean wave doesn't have to do with the government. The company funding Parasite was on a blacklist by the former government, BTS's bighit was a minor company not getting any spotlight. It's rather the efforts of Korean celebrities and the entertainment industry that led to the global success. If your logic is right, how come other countries like Japan, China, and others who are spending even bigger budgets on cultural export didn't have their own waves? I feel like for The US entertainment industry compared to the kpop industry, (I’ve been a kpop fan for 10 years now) the US entertainment industry already has numerous publications and stories about how malicious they already are. CNBC wants to cover all of that basis when they report on the kpop industry, because it’s true, there are many more negatives that they could’ve touched on in my opinion but didn’t. They honestly could’ve painted it as a bad picture just like they do the US entertainment industry, however both industries will continue to generate revenue and gain popularity no matter what.

I hope that correct truths will spread widely. Korean wave..It is a naturally occurring phenomenon..Korean wave began in Asia in the 1990s. In 2000, the popular Korean drama was exported to over 100 countries.According to date, most countries have been investing in culture for a long time.. This is absolutely natural. Korea has invested less in culture than the United States, France, Italy, Germany, Asian countries, China, Japan, and the Middle East. If it's not fun or of low quality, people don't approach it. For example, I have seen people who like Korean dramas mention the actor's acting skills, contents quality, and addiction.

Agree. It's a very lazy report, although looks like an accurate report because of statistics figures. First of all, the Korean government's cultural budget is mostly support traditional culture and independent culture, not pop culture. Moreover, it is a sum of support for tourism and sports as well as culture. Secondly, the reporter showed the amount of South Korean pop culture exports, but more than half of them are from game exports. In fact, K-pop is only about 5 percent of Korean pop culture exports. Third, the Korean government has never set up or invested in K-pop and K-drama companies. So why does she say that the Korean government invested strategically in popular culture? It is true that the Korean government valued culture, but the Korean Wave was born first and the government recognized and used it later.

But man, SK is a country with one of the most sophisticated democratic system on top of a sheer capitalism. If the gov was able to pull up the industry to the global level, rich nations as China and Japan could have done it decades ago. Remember one of the report from French journalist back in the early-mid 2020 saying the reason for SK's success in reducing the number of infected ppl is by heavy government oppression (which is in fact far from truth)? But guess what? Who's really doing lock down now? Anyways, if you're a journalist, please do your job. Fact.. Every country is investing in culture. South Korea has much less cultural investment than major foreign countries, major east Asian countries or Middle Eastern. In addition, most developed countries and cultural powers have long invested in culture. However, some foreign media ignore that. I have often seen some media focus on other non-critical parts rather than the nature of the Korean wave(contents, quality, fun, addiction, actors' acting ability). There is no deep reflection on Korean culture at all. The frame has not changed 10 years ago or now. Take a movie as an example ..Parasite director Bong Joon-ho actual interview. Bong Joon-ho: "Support for the Korean film industry.There is a lot of focus on independent films, documentaries, and those areas. Most of these Korean films are invested, distributed, and produced by private companies, so I think the Korean film industry has its own health.”

Stop claiming Hallyu as a result of the governmental support. If it was possible, why the heck other countries didn't do that?
@jiggythibs
@jiggythibs 4 жыл бұрын
It is indeed due to the government who has been organising concert all over the world since the early 1990's. There use to be cheap concerts subsidised by the government with cheap tickets while advertising Korean brands in front of the concert halls. The USA have done the same (investing in culture) since the 1930's at the beginning of the TV. They secured quota of American movies in theatre and music on radio in France for about 50 years. France although spreads its culture with Alliance Francaise and different events subsidised by the government. As well as other countries. Why the other countries don't do that? Because it's a risky expensive long term investment. It took about 30 years and billions of dollars to Korea to be recognise worldwide since the government started the Hallyu program. Other countries have different priorities, different budget available, different lobby influencing their governments,... There is many reasons. However, you can see that other countries do so through free international TV channels like TVE, NHK, DW, CCTV, TV5 monde, Arirang,.... All of our countries have to make choices and prioritise what they believe is best. However, the government isn't the only reason why Hallyu has become so successful even tho 5.5 Bn USD per year does help a lot. The creations (talent) of the artists, the success of Korean brands like Samsung, LG,... wordlwide, and few other reasons are the other ingredients that have made the recipe successful which is although why it can't be replicated everywhere.
@Sururuk
@Sururuk 4 жыл бұрын
@@jiggythibs You know nothing about the case of Korea. First of all, 5.5 billion dollars budget for culture ministry? It is a total budget of the "Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism," including support for artists(fine art), subsidies for low income family to enjoy cultural activities(usually tickets for museums, classical music concerts, musicals, plays), building and maintaining sports facilities, and helping tourism industries, and education of Korean language in foreign countries. Governmental effort does almost nothing with Halyu. Do you really think Gangnam style was a result of governmental subsidy?

@@Sururuk I don't know why you are sensitive in regards of having a government promoting culture. This is something people should be proud of. Having a government supporting culture and artists is a dream for many artists. I've never said BTS was subsidised by the government and I don't see why they would when their label is on the stock market valued in billions of USD. Regarding the support of concerts in general by the government, it is still going on and there is a budget specifically for that in 2021. If you speak Korean, go on the moef website and see for yourself. I think this video has upset many people including you since it sounds like BTS and the whole 한류 wouldn't exist without the gov support. K-wave is successful simply because it has contents that people like, the very same reason why Japanese manga/anime are successful. If the contents are out of date or not interested to general public anymore, it will quickly fade away. South Korean government supports K wave by promoting private sectors and fair competition within the sector. Nobody cared about BTS when they first came out. They went through endless hours of practice and challenges to become the best kpop boy band that they are now not because of some "national policy" of South Korean government. It's not like China where they just throw endless supply of money they have directly to entertainment companies and bribe interested parties for promotion.

I see many valid points, but I'd like to stress something that is gravely overlooked, and it's the influence of KZbin and social media on Kpop and K-entertainment. If there was no KZbin, Kpop today would be nowhere near this popular. I can't stress this enough. The hallyu wave of the 2000s were only limited to Asian countries because of its close geographic boundaries. The late 2000 early 2010s was the ideal point for its exposure into the world as KZbin and social media started booming. The hallyu wave that was already flourishing rode the wave of KZbin/social media and basically turned into a tidal wave that eliminated all boundaries. But what's most important is that Korea just kept producing pretty amazing entertainment products, and it was a matter of time for them to be exposed and consumed internationally.

The thing is BTS never really followed the traditional kpop model standard of the big3. From the beginning, they stood out because they were outspoken when other companies censored their music to fit a mold. BTS were rejected for YEARS because there was no mold for what they were doing and now they are accepted because BTS created a new form of expression that was rare if not absent from the previous form of kpop. Nothing the bigger groups from the big3 did really helped BTS in fact what they created was exactly what caused them to be ostracized. They'd compare BTS to them and think BTS were nobodies who didn't fit the idol mold. I am not saying the others did nothing for kpop because they did, but they didn't really contribute anything to BTS or their success even those who managed to poke a hole for themselves in the western market.

The key driving force of 'Korean Wave' is a political freedom. Now, Korea become just example of democracy. In 1980s, Hong Kong ruled by British had a very strong soft power especially in Asia. But since 1998, Hong Kong lost their cultural superiority very rapidly as they lost freedom under China. The Current Korean society is full of freedom comparable to British Hong Kong. Furthermore, because Korea's economic power and population is much greater than British Hong Kong, Korean soft power has now prevailed over the whole world beyond Asia. In contrast, Japanese society has never had such a freedom.

Yes, the Korean government wants to increase GDP with it and is investing with it, but it has not become a game changer and rather follows it belatedly. The only thing the Korean government did well in the Korean Wave decades ago was to lift regulations and oppression that had remained since the military government of the past. Nothing, no one can be perfect so of course Korean wave ( Hanyu) also accompany and bring with positive and negative things togather but sick of hearing that this culture comes from Korean government support and some strategy ,etc...... if world wide medias really want to know what is going on and the reason why korean wave beocmes popular, they should listen BTS and BLACKPINK songs and figure out what they want to say. Before Media report this kind of story, this is essential and basic manner for them.

@Bom Purply you are entirely right, but you are talking about 2020. Korean entertainment needed help in the beginning, now it’s flying by itself. The Korean government took Korean entertainment globally by many different ways (cultural centers / creation of Korean broadcasting company / creation of Korea foundation etc.) If you want to learn more about how the Korean government created the Hallyu part of their soft power strategy, I recommend you reading « The Korean wave, evolution, fandom and trans nationality », (especially chapter 4). It has been written by Tae-Jin Yoon and Dal-Young Jin who researched the origin of the Hallyu I had the opportunity to interview them writing my PhD thesis on the matter, and I can tell you that the gov is 100% responsible for the Hallyu.

I live in Korea and I have never heard government supporting entertainment industry, they rather censor it. Most popular groups like BTS, Blackpink, they got no help from government. BTS came from a small company, almost bankrupt. Please learn about the industry before posting this type of stuff.

same reasons blinks make mvs about BTS and when we click on it all we get is bp. STOP RIDING BTS COAT TAILS.....they have had 4 collaborations with MAJOR US singers and they still couldnt do it. As a mater of fact we were all worried the major singers would be shamed ......Bts collabed with a song and brought it up from a freefall to #1..wait...that might be a good idea. that way ppl can compare the two and see what we mean.....IM CONFLICTED>

Where are you getting your facts? Saying the first Hollywood movies were allowed in 1988 is a complete false fact. Koreans were enjoying Hollywood movies decades ago

This reporter exactly conveys what japanese media has been spreading about how Korean wave has been possible today. However, K pop or Korean Wave has never been directly supported in any but just they amended the law and some restrictions. So people get more chances to do their business in entertainment and bring higher competency and capability. Japanese govt is the very one has brought every budgets for their entertainment industry, Cool Japan.

So disappointed to see yet another inaccurate description of the relationship between South Korea and Japan. Are Western countries saying Germany has very negative opinions toward Israel because of their history? I wonder why not? Because thats what you are doing to South Korea. Its so ridiculous its not even funny.

I am very surprised by Korean movies. I think the quality and especially the acting ability of Korean actors makes Korean movies superior to many Hollywood movies. Who knows; soon they might just become the next Hollywood of the world. Also, imagine what could happen when the two Koreas become United!? With S Korean know how and abundant N Korean natural resources to include labor; United Korea will surely become a global power house of economy, culture and even military power. Believe it or not; S Korean military power is already rated 6th in the world. If it absorbs N Korean military, it could become 2-3rd military power. S Korea is already building an aircraft carrier. Upon completion; it’s naval power will surpass Japan.

The real growth engine behind KPop I believe is 대학가요제 (pop competition from college students) which pulled in huge number of talents for singers and song writers. I mean, this was the turning point of South Korea's music industry (ran by MBC for the first time in 1980). Even in 90s, Korean pop culture was already very huge at least in domestic market. Also places like Hongdae (place where indie artists perform busking) or increase in popularity of hip hop or ballads in 90s all contributed the growth of kpop industry. I mean, I dont think these CNBC analysts analyzed a lot. They just stated the current facts as to how much it is successful but failed to explain what truly caused it.

K wave is the result of hard and smart work by Koreans who realize that competing with China and Japan to survive while having no natural resources is insanely difficult and inefficient. It is much easier to export Korean cultures than cars and TVs!
