no, NVIDIA has always been under valued. The gain in efficiency only leads to wider adoption of AI and NVIDIA is present in all aspect. Efficiency means more data is produced by more efficient AI models -> more NVIDIA software solution will be utilized for training-> more training -> more NVIDIA chips for training -> more sophisticated models require more sophisticated hardware to inference -> NVIDIA is also present in this domain.

When the USA banned China from the ‘International’ Space Station, China built their own, called Tiangong. (You know, the space station which doesn’t currently house stranded astronauts.) It is a shame the USA always has to ‘block’ and tariff counties, rather than allowing cooperation and free trade. The ultimate result with China however, is just to make China speed up, and become even stronger.

For anyone who doesn't understand whats going on. So far the American AI language models have all been very power intensive, and investors thought we'd need millions of high-end Nvidia GPUs to run them. It's more than that. A lot of the best models rely on CUDA, which is Nvidia's own proprietary technology. Deepseek didn't use CUDA, and they did something that those big companies (including Nvidia) would have said was impossible. So it's not just that you can get more with less Nvidia, it's that you can get more WITHOUT Nvidia.

It's certainly reduced the _value_ in the compute layer, but it's still an open question whether a $100 million data center running AI with these and other advancements will bring us much closer to AGI/ASI than competitors. A week ago the value of an expert LLM coach/partner/assistant was only $200 a month (ChatGPT Pro), because it is drunk and unreliable and needs supervision. DeepSeek just dropped cost of that junior intern. But make a reliable LLM so it can do the work of a mid-level lawyer/doctor/programmer/researcher and it's worth a _lot_ more; as Dario Amodei says imagine having lots such employees. And if open models keep up with closed then the AI won't cost as much as that job currently pays, and the economy changes dramatically. Exciting times!

They weren't lying. There were open source models before last Friday like Llama 3, and the best versions took a lot of resources to train and run. Engineers made steady improvements in efficiency. This is what a breakthrough looks like. LCD TVs didn't mean anyone was lying about the existing plasma TVs being expensive. It's also possible that this is a brilliant Chinese psyop and DeepSeek R1 actually required a lot of training on black-market Nvidia chips. We won't know until somebody replicates its training.

How come the U.S. is still freaking out when Chinese always work more for less and Americans always work less for more. Products from China have been always more affordable and with more advanced technology. That is just how Chinese system works and that is how the world, especially the developing countries are benefited from Chinese products. It is now clear why they (US) are going the way of one-shot to AGI, so as to keep fast followers like China at bay. and not feed followers with performance data/capabilities of leading edge models; it is like not giving students answer keys to exams. As for fast followers, it' is always easier to optimize a known pathway or process, but it is incalculably harder to find/invent solutions at the leading edge -- the edge of unknown. What fast follower Deepseek has claimed to have done is to optimize the method to train something like the OpenAI O1. But remember that O1 is not the leading edge of AI, that model as we know is the O3 as of a few weeks ago, (which has already been shown to be a quantum leap over O1). But if Deepseek were to try and invent something like O3 , Deepseek would still need to get gigantic GPU farms to explore all spectrum of plausible solutions.

In other words, Deep Seek or any AI model will have to be OVERWHELMINGLY (3x) more useful for any temptation for widespread commercial adoption. Intellectual property is a large part of the valuation for many companies, and therefore the widespread adoption will mainly be done by retail.
