The violation of our Charter has been rampant for decades from the RCMP on down and there is little recourse for citizens. A tariff might force Canada and Ontario specifically to respect the rights of citizens once they realize how critical they are to a nation when global.competition favours those who produce the best and brightest,.not tnose who expand.their unaccountable covert police state.

my short answer to maga republicans for tariffs: a tariff is a tax payed by YOU, not the country that the product is imported from. for instance, if say we were to import TVs from xyz company in europe that cost $1000 and trump puts a 25% tariff on it, xyz company ships it over for the same cost but the tariff taxes 25% of it making the price $1250 now and the tariff payed will go to the government like any other tax while YOU are the one who foots the bill.

@@SingerDuce so glad you asked. tariffs are intended to stimulate the economy into producing more jobs, however, we are severely unprepared for this as we have been relying on other countries to import things such as oil, minerals, and lumber (all three of which we get from canada). in order to achieve the economic goals and overall production levels, it would take an estimated 10-20 years to reach full capacity.
@Itsme-wk5zw11 сағат бұрын
We'll pay the tax if we buy Canadian made products, but who is gonna pay 25% more for a Canadian made thing, when US made things are cheaper. @@Itsme-wk5zw good point. however, there is also a lower production rate in the united states since for decades we have been importing from other countries in order to do it cheaper. if I was to pay for the same thing from china and something from the USA, due to the US having a higher production cost, it would directly translate to higher prices.

Trump has declared war on the people of Canada and his comments are to be taken seriously. Totally cutting of energy to the United States sounds a bit draconian but a surcharge of at least 25% , (taking into consideration the potential drop in the value of the Canadian dollar ) on the price of energy, bottled water etc. is a must. Visits with Trump like a mendicant with begging bowl in hand is the wrong approach and is doomed to fail. Canada must also initiate contact with Mexico to consider a joint response.

@@A_Bunch_of_Savages I agree and upon reconsideration of my characterization of what Ford said as “ too Draconian “ was wrong.. Suggesting Trudeau become the Governor of the State of Canada underscores the lack of concern that Trump has for the potential consequences to the citizens of both countries and how difficult it is going to be to resolve the situation. This is not a joking matter. and anything less than resolve and strength on behalf of Canada will result in disaster. BTW the talk about the border etc. is just a pretext.

Just in. Doug Ford, the Premier of Ontario has just stated at an interview that if the tariffs in the US are assessed, the Government of Ontario will block all energy and strategic mineral exports to the United States. Most effected will be New York, Pennsylvania, Michigan, Wisconsin and Illinois. Unfortunately the refineries in those states can only process heavy Canadian crude oil. Lighter crude cannot be processed at these refineries. This would result in a total cut off of oil, natural gas and electricity.

Excellent an escalating trade war that hurts Ontario's workers deeply with little effective response - instead of targeted tariffs that hurt GOP senate and congressional candidates in key districts, states and industries which had Trump turning and running quickly the last time he tried this crap. Dropping big bombs mean you take out many more people than necessary arnie - a scorched earth policy like Ford's would be a disaster for Canada. Our suffering would be far deeper than the US because Trump listens to and cares about no one but himself. So you have to target the vulnerable areas that squeeze in just the right places so the GOP politicians will stop this crap themselves and work around an irrational and demented Trump

Unfortunately,.Ontario represents a quasi police state with zero accountability so this makes us quite vulnerable. If Ontario entered the 21st Century and had accountability that upheld our Charter of Rights and Freedoms, we would be innovative, we wouldn't lose our best talent to the U.S, we'd actua!ly have our own strong corporarions who could thus employ Canadians AND Americans. Instead, we have a bloated police apparatus and we don't employ many Americans. I urge Americans to google all the extra moey he spent on Toronto Police alone above and beyond their budgets during covid. This has always been Canadian "conservatism". Our economy is a fossil.

I noticed what you are talking about, how your government took your charter of rights and wiped their butt with them. I was shocked to hear they criminalized speech and lock people up for speaking their mind. I was watching a video several years ago, where a Canadian guy lost his temper in a fast food place and cussed some immigrants. They actually sent the police and arrested him for hate speech and I think gave him a year or two in jail. Now I see they're trying to take your guns. If things get too bad, you're welcome to come to the US. So far we still have our gun rights, but it's been a constant fight to keep them. My state recently passed constitutional carry no permit required, but it took us banding together and voting out all the leftist gun grabbers to get this law passed.

The US is going back to the old days where tariff free trade is only among states. Canada will have to become a state to get tariff free trade. It's not that Trump is trying to get Canada to join us, he's just telling Trudeau that free trade is only among states, like it was for centuries. We never allowed foreign companies to have tariff free access to our economy where they can compete with US companies and undercut them. Canada doesn't need to be buying US dairy when you have your dairy producers who don't wanna be undercut by US producers. The tariff free thing was a stpid idea to begin with.
