+heidebill Cool! Have fun with it. If it's your first CNC there will be a slight learning curve for a little while as you work with different software packages. If you're used to CNC stuff you will have it up very fast. There is lots of support online. It's a great community of support. Best of luck.

how to connect with mach3
@TinysWorld

I have the CNC 3040T USB version with the black control box. It does have the parallel connection on the back but it appears to be dead. Certainly I couldn't get Mach 3 to work with it no matter what I tried so I use the software that came with my CNC 3040 which was USBCNC. It's very basic but it does all I need for the moment. I just use it to set up and home my machine, drag my Gcode files into it and let it rip. These are great little machines for the money. So far I've milled out PCBs, Acrylic Signs and Engraved some stuff. It does everything I've asked of it. I have upgraded my stock 200W motor to a 400W motor recently so I can have a go at slowly milling some aluminium molds eventually. I purchased the four axis version though I've not used the fourth axis yet. I'm still getting to grips with regular 2D and 2.5D stuff. One of the reasons I purchased mine (as well as for rapid prototyping) was to mass produce small signs and plaques but it has quickly become apparent that these machines aren't suited for any form of mass production at speed. For this reason, I am now looking to buy my CNC 3040 a bigger and more powerful brother. Something in the region of 600mm x 900mm working area. I have a 4ft x 13ft space free in my workshop waiting to be filled so now I need to get saving. I've been looking at one machine called the Blue Elephant which might fit in there nicely. It's around $4000 - $6000 (depending on model / customisations etc) shipped to the UK. It's feed rate is measured in M per minute, not MM lol. I'm going to have to put my little baby CNC 3040 to hard work to earn it's keep and pay for it's big brother LOL =]

Hey Tiny World, thanks for posting this was really helpful to me! Do you suggest anywhere I can learn to make proper G code? as when using the CNC program that comes with the machine it stops after making one short curved line. Could this be because I don't have a full licence? (as the long code they gave me doesn't work). Or because my g-code just isn't correct? I haven't cut anything successfully yet, but i will be using it to mill out specific 2D shapes from aluminium/wood. Any help would be really appreciated.

Hi, Sorry I have not replied sooner but I've not been well. I over did things this summer and managed to injure my back :( The CNC Program that comes with these machines (Often CNC USB Software) I find is quite limited and basic. I only really use the software that came with my CNC Machine for milling out PCB circuit boards. For cutting out shapes, making signs, engraving or anything else along those lines etc I highly recommend Vectric Aspire (A.K.A. V-Carve) but it isn't cheap to buy - BUT it is worth every penny! Prior to using Aspire, I have tried lengthy tool chains using free softwares to convert one format to another to another such as Inkscape then to G-Code then to a G-Code sender but it just ends up long winded, complicated and I seldom got the results I wanted without hours of fiddling and messing about. Now I only use the software that came with my CNC machine for milling out PCBs. For everything else I use Aspire (V-Carve). And while V-Carve looks mega complicated and intimidating, it's actually quite simple and intuitive to use once you've watched one or two tutorials. I've milled out signs I've designed in Aspire as well as engraved dog tags, engraved plaques etc. It really is a powerful and versatile tool and worth the money IMO. I'm not sure but I think there used to be a demo version of V-Carve with limited features and functionality so you could have a little try before you buy. It's a lot of money to spend if it's not what you're after. It might also be an idea to drop the people that make V-Carve an email to discuss your requirements and see what they recommend. I know they offer package deals on their software such as 2D and 3D carving bundles so rather than buying just the one software and later realising you need another, it might be worth checking out what you are likely to need and get a bundle. Hope that helps!

Is it possible to swap the spindle motor with a 15w laser module?
@drez20001
@drez20001 6 жыл бұрын
A laser could be attached to the CNC where the spindle is, however, controlling a laser is different than using a spindle or router. Software commands are different to turn the laser on and off, control the duration, and power. For a small laser it would be a better idea to get a laser machine that is designed for that purpose. Best of luck.

I just got a 3040t today. Very similar to yours so I hope you can help. I have not yet installed the software. But I was trying to turn on and test the spindle just using the manual control. But it will not start. Does your spindle work without the software on? Not sure if it's a bad cnc or if I need to install software first (waiting on a new/old computer to arrive).

will this work with a MacBook pro? also I need to buy software? Is there anything else i need to buy to set it up?
@drez20001
@drez20001 7 жыл бұрын
This CNC will not work with a MacBook. It requires an old desktop with an old school parallel port. There are some workarounds for the parallel port but it's a Windows based machine. And, yes, there is additional software needed. It's a fun hobby but there is a learning curve if you're coming into it with no prior CAD/CAM experience. The best way to get started with CNC is to join a forum and ask lots of questions. Best of luck to you.

@drez20001
@drez20001 7 жыл бұрын
Unfortunately, no. This CNC is based on older tech with the most common CAM program being Mach3. This machine works the best with Windows XP on an old desktop. Some of the newer 3040 CNCs do have a USB option, however, they are still running for the most part on older computers.

It's a great hobby with almost unlimited potential for creativity. I have a lot of videos on using this CNC as well as other CNCs that I've built but not too many on the setting up of the 3040. If you have a 3D printer, another way to go is to build the MPCNC www.thingiverse.com/thing:724999 I recently built this CNC and it's pretty cool. You can also buy the kits from Ryan at vicious1-com.myshopify.com/ This is the MPCNC I finished about a month ago. kzbin.info/www/bejne/oIuxf35rh9iXsNk As far as forums go cnczone is huge and would have people there to help new folks enter the hobby. If you're looking for a small forum you could check out www.worldofwoodforum.com/vb/ that's where I started years ago. It's a small group of people but very welcoming and helpful. Also, check out the CNC With Dave show. It's on every Saturday night at 9pm. It's a great group of people. Dave also sells kits to make very good and large CNCs. kzbin.info/www/bejne/pnKUfY2ka5V9baM

@drez20001
@drez20001 9 жыл бұрын
The computer I use to run the CNC is an old Dell that is running XP. For my main computer station I have Win 7. There are many CNC software programs that will run on Win 7. Mach3 however was designed for older systems but I have run it in Win 7 just to run 'fake' tests. I haven't tried to actually drive the CNC with a Win 7 machine. It should also be noted that it's really best to have a dedicated computer (not laptop) running the CNC that doesn't have any internet connection, virus protection, etc. or any programs running in the background. Step counts are very precise and if the computer is running more than just the CNC it's very easy for the step count to get off and the cut to go way off track. I do have the old Dell networked to my main computer. This way I can design cuts on my main system and then just send the files over to the old Dell. Best of luck.
