Mastercam is primarily a CAM solution for programming toolpaths against geometry, but it is also a capable CAD modeling tool for building models or construction geometry to control the tool motion. If you have a part that requires a fixture or customized jaws to hold it securely for machining, Mastercam is a very capable program for many of these tasks. This includes creating parts, features, and even assemblies to check for fit and to include in the program as avoidance regions.
In this example, a fixture plate is required that fits the bosses on one side of a part that can then be clamped and held for the final machining operation. The Impression command quickly creates the base geometry and removes the necessary shape to fit the part geometry. Clamps are selected to hold the part, so the plate must fit both the part geometry and the geometry from the manufacturer of the clamp. CAD models of the clamps can be merged into the project and located for reference to check the final design.
