I’m right there with you on the waste board no needing to be a bigger deal than it must. I have some strips with t track in between but my MDF strips are just held down by blue tape & ca glue. ;) I think the pencil idea was a good one. Small loss

Ohhh! Maybe I’ll do that on future replacement Wasteboard pieces. I was wondering how I would not demolish my table with screw holes over time.

I thought I was the only one that had the pencil idea! Great minds think alike. I like the simplicity of your waste board. I think I'm going to do a series of holes across the front and left side of my table, drop in a couple of pins and use them as a way to square the material in that front left corner.

Wait till you snap your only 1/8 DC bit all while in the middle of a job. What a neat trick with the pencil. Wish I had thought of it. Love that you are sharing your learning of the machine. I’ll tell you a secret I have yet to flatten my waste board and I don’t use t track.

Aw that sounds terrible! Does the breaking of the bits have to do with heat, you think? - now I wanna see your Wasteboard! I think you are right… they don’t have to be crazy intricate.

@@OakHillMillworks I wish I could blame it on heat. I’m not affluent in video games thus when moving the gantry I went down instead of up. Bone head move! As for no t-track I utilize micro jig dove tail grooves instead. I have their dovetail accessories pack and paired with some simple hold downs. It does ok. I went this direction mostly to not have a bit accidentally hit and break. Which looking back I have already accomplished that feat so it was for nothing.

Hi Christy, love the idea with the pencil as this will square the waste board to the machine not the table. I went to my local hardware store and bought some bright steel long nails to suit a collet cut the top of and lightly clamp it in the collet to do trial /test runs with my hand over the E stop i ran a number of tests ( Bent some nail and not some cutters ) till confident the program in vetric was right before cutting. love your simple ideas to solve complex problems cheers

Hi Ma'am, this is the NorthEast Regional Manager for PETNo2P. (People for the Ethical Treatment of No2 Pencils). We saw in your video the distruciton and mayhem you caused that poor innocent No2 Pencil. Not only did you whittle down it's back end, you carelessly drove it's head into the wooden slab with such force as to crush it by atleast 1/4 of an inch or more. We are upset that you joked about it being "an accident" and even mortified that you did not provide evidence that you reestablished the beauty and usefullness of the victim. For that, you are hereby put on notice. We don't want to see any more torment or torture of future No2 pencils. Just remember our slogan: "They are unique because No Two Pencils are alike." :) But in all reality, great video, and gives me a less complex option idea for my next waste board. I want to simplify mine now that I've used it for over a year, but it took so long to make it w/ the threaded inserts and stuff, I can't bear the thoght of trashing it right now. Keep up the great work.

Waste boards are meant to be replaced and you may find you have different wants/needs like threaded inserts with a fence as you move along. I’m actually thinking next time I replace mine I might do a small section in the front left as threaded inserts and the rest be t track like I have currently. 🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️

Yeah I think I mostly had no clue what I needed so I laid down a basic set up just to get going. I see so many people just using double sided tape / CA glue and tape.

The pencil was brilliant. Perhaps a 1/4 dowel to practice for a bit for us newbies. Much better to break a dowel or a pencil than a bit.

Tip for you. use Xbox controller to make the outer marks with pencil in router. use the controller buttons to lock out the axis not being used. no programing needed. and do not over tighten the pencil in the router. could be bad.

I've been spending the past week trying to figure out how to do my waste board for my new CNC router. I have extrusions for based which is unlike those with MDF table surface. I could attach a photo to show but unsure if its possible to add on comment

@@OakHillMillworks Thanks yeah, I guess I've figured it out. Will put down plywood on top of the aluminum spoil board extrusions that is part of the machine frame work first as permanent base with inserts and dog holes. I would then glue some MDF on top of the plywood. over time when the MDF is surfaced down to seeing the plywood. time to glue a new layer of MDF and use saved template to make new holes to same place as old ones. Thinking that's the easiest way to do my waste board.

@@OakHillMillworks You've got that right. Those CNC do help a production shop a lot. I'm still using chisels and hand planes; so I'm not banging out any work. Hand work satisfies me, but sometimes there are a lot of mistakes. I think the CNC would cut down on those mistakes. But, again, I'm at the end of the road. Maintain the flame.

@@themeat5053 there are lots of people who get into the tech and then get to a point where they want to learn hand-cutting dovetails and slower rhythms. We have to enjoy what we do at the end of the day. ♥️

People spend way too much time on waste boards and often overlook the ability to quickly change out to a new one or treat them like they weren’t ACTUALLY waste boards lol.

@@OakHillMillworks whatever you can do to save time on repetitious work. I just ordered one of these, we'll see but I plan on making it as hands off as possible. On the Stepcraft I used I even installed the auto tool changer, saved tons of time and I could work on other projects while it did its thing.
