I worked on some of the early CNC machines in the early 70’s with only 3 and 4 axis machining, paper tapes and not much else. It has certainly come a long way! The only limit today is ones imagination!

@@muzzaball standard indexable tool holders (the kind with inserts) range from under $100 for small endmills to $200-$500 for indexable drills and up to $1000 for large shell or face mills. You can also get custom tool holders with specific geometry to cut special patterns called form cutters, these can get very expensive in the $1000-$10000+ these are common in the automotive and other high production applications the consumable inserts themselves are in the $5-$50 range generally the bigger the tool the more is cost, especially if you want an unusually long tool as these are hard to manufacture. For carbide tools the carbide itself is the biggest cost. a half inch carbide blank might cost $30 with the finished tool only costing $35

What surprises me most is that they do not use any type of coolant emulsion in the roughing process, even being aluminum. I thought that temperature gradients could cause some plastic deformation.

I couldn't help but notice that no coolant, not even for the form taps, was used. From my experience, no coolant whilst taking, what looks like, fifty-thou cuts is a lot of stress on the indexible cutters. You can actually see smoke caused by friction between the tool s and the metal being cut.

@MikkelRS My opinion is that everyone should be that anal on cleanliness. It gets lost obviously when you're in a workshop and speed is the key but realistically as a young manual miller I dislike the fact that every machine I touch has 30 years of dried coolant and swarf embedded into both the machine and the surrounding floor. Id love to work somewhere that allowed time for a full clean down after every few jobs. I dont think working in a mess should be an accepted norm

Why would you use such a tipsy container to cool your endmil? You tipped it over when you pulled the mill out. Had the liquid nitrogen landed in your lap, you would be regretting it. One other thing... You left the mill in the nitrogen for so long a layer of frost built up, adding to the diameter of the tool. That makes it harder to insert. I'd like to see what happens if you take the tool out of the nitrogen before a l ot of frost builds up.
