As a young kid I never really cared about race and it wasn't until I was older that I noticed that every time I watched a TV show that was an all black cast (sister sister, fresh prince, etc) My mom would ALWAYS say "turn off this garbage" but she would never say that when I watched the Brady Bunch or something. When I I was younger I went to my friends birthday party alice in Wonderland I bought her a present a barbie doll I was younger than 8 she said I could come in her house shes pale and has blonde hair blue eyes I am brown So she tells me ill brb and walks away she comes back and says "do you want to play with the dolls in my room?" and out of the blue her mom tells us to "stay in the living room no going in the room" when she walks away shes whispers "Weird my mom always lets my friend payton (which she is pale and blonde hair) come in my room" I felt like crying but I didnt show it at the time

My best friend in primary school was white, her parents let her come over to mine but I was never allowed over to theirs, my mum would say things like; "white people are weird and have no boundaries in their homes" I don't think it was due to racism but rather ignorance and fear, then in high school I would go to my white friends houses and it turns out it was like any other home in my community except they had dogs running around. I think it's fear that separates people, and sometimes it's good to go against our parents because they are from a wierd generation.

As a child I saw no difference between races, gender, etc. which might have been due to me going to a very diverse preschool (preschool was my first time playing and meeting other children). I played with all the children in the preschool and my first perceptions of race became how I saw these people act. I believe that this is the healthiest way to introduce race to a child because they are learning what people are actually like before they ever hear the stereotypes. I have grown up as someone who to this day won't even think about race unless someone brings it up and as a result has treated everyone the same. While this is not going to work for everyone, it worked when my parents were raising me and it is one of the many reasons I am thankful for my parents.

I'm n mixed but I grew up in a predominantly black/hispanic neighborhood. When I was in pre-school there was one girl there who was white and she was my best friend at pre-school. We did everything together. I remember one day we told each other that we were sisters and we each ripped out a strand of hair and put it on each others head and claimed to be sisters forever. I don't know if she moved out not but I never saw her after that. Idk the reason cuz I was young. I just wanted to share :D

The only thing that really irritates me is just another way I say the thing that most irritates me. I wrote this 32 weeks ago and now the thing I dislike the most about this is that their are only two races in the video. No body mentions mexicans or Scottish people or irish people or anyone else who weren't seen as equal. Black and white are only two colors. And about that last bit. I'm Black and when I was a kid I went to a mainly white school and I noticed that the white kids didn't play with the black kids but the black kids didn't really mind playing with anyone cos you don't really have a choice lol. But the white kids didn't mind playing with mix race kids and me because I'm lightskin and so they thought I was mixed too. The white kids weren't racist but they preferred to stick to there own. (I also realised the parents of the white kids were definitely a little racist on the sly and they didn't associate with the black parents much). Only when we played football/soccer we all played together.

I work in a very multicultural school. All the students get along very well together with almost no mention of race what so ever. White kids sit with Black kids and so on and so forth. Then Black History month comes along and it's as if all of sudden the behavior of the students is transformed and everybody starts calling racial fouls and dividing themselves based on race and skin color. It's one thing to teach about different cultures and backgrounds. However I feel that we should simply have AMERICAN HISTORY Month and give all students at the same time an opportunity to express themselves and their culture and share it with other students. By making a distinction and dividing such celebrations based on race and skin color we are in a sense teaching children to make that distinction and division as well. It's time to change that!

Unlike having a History Month that just celebrates one culture, American history month would teach students that all cultures and backgrounds are important and so were not just singling out one! It would also eliminate the idea of segregating people and their history based on their Skin Color because gee everything I grew up learning from people like Dr. Martin Luther King is that the color of one's skin is not suppose to matter!! I started school on an American military base overseas. I cannot recall one instance when I felt "apart" from the local population, and we welcomed a few dozen nationalities into our home without a second thought. Our classes were completely integrated and racial prejudice was unknown. (I didn't "learn" that I was supposed to feel bad about having pale skin until we came to America. My first experience with a racist attitude was directed at me, on a beautiful day and out of nowhere. They required hospitalization for their rudeness.)

I'm mixed race. When I was a child I don't recall anything related to race preferences in our house. I was taught to judge people by what they do, not what they look like. When I was sent to the predominantly white catholic school I was told in the first grade that the white parents preferred that their children not play with me. My dad had read to us every Sunday morning and I loved books. I just sat on the bench and read and thought those silly girls would probably loose at their games if they let me play. it did hurt to be excluded. I believed they were sawing themselves from embarrassment. I'm still an avid reader and it still hurts to be excluded.

I was 8 when an African American child said I was born racist because I was white and that is what his parents told him. I just wanted to be his friend and was bullied for it. I dont think i had always had a clear understanding of how much my parents hated everyone. Me too, i guess. Its like youre too americanized. Americans this & that. & Like? Im sorry you decided to bring me into the world out here & now this is all i know? Wow, its like we dont even inhabit the same living space... But ohhh i didnt know how much my parents disliked white ppl till my bro hooked up w/ one. & That girls parents are just as odd. Actually, they pretty much bailed on her when she got pregnant. & My parents did pick up the pieces & gave my bro space to do the right thing. But that was a little weird at first. Bc she stayed w/ us. & Waking up to real.. baby cries on school nights wasnt always my norm. & Her weird ignorant ... Drunk dad hit on me too. I completely told my dad. Anywho, i remember when we were on a trip to fl & she (+ her sis) was w/ us. Cracking up laughing bc my niece wouldnt stop staring at a black guy. This is the suburbs.. .but she had to go into explanation bc i didnt get it. Its weird to hear how others think sometimes. Bc i was like im sure shes seen a black person before. Its prob limited in our school bubble... But when were out & about, theyre not that rare. But lowkey i entertained the thought. But was like whatever. Babies stare at everyone. That stranger was prob like wth r they laughing about?

As an early child educator this makes me very sad and disturbed I had no idea what kids were being told so much past than what we tried to teach in our program. Different color of skin would often come up and talked a lot about it. One way we taught it was focusing on the similarities of our outer appearances and the inside of our bodies. We often would bring a brown and white egg in and ask them what's the difference between the 2 eggs. They would state the obvious one is brown & one is what. Then we would crack the egg and show them what's inside and ask them what's the difference? They would respond there isn't any. Then we would tell them that's how our bodies are we look different from the outside but on the inside we are the same. Then we would ask a question they could reference to most likely their class were of different nationalities & cultures so we would often ask questions along the lines what the world around us of everything was the same. Like there was just one kind of tree or on brown grass or only night and no day and what if there was only one kind of person and we all looked the same and sounded the same would that be any fun? Most agreed that would be dull & boring so we would allow them to point out similarities and differences and encourage them that's what keeps things fun learning more about things we just do not know a lot about and seeing the similarities and differences between humans and other things within our world. It wasn't something we covered once then moved on we would visit it or input new ideas of thinking as the class progressed. It's true it often starts in the home and it's sad that kids thought it would upset their parents. The way I look at things I get a part of that, but one day that child will be a part of society & the adult world and as much as they are of the parents' world one day their world will be all theirs and why not teach them cultural diversity and how to accept or the very least co-exsit without making it about color and learning to know a person and decide if they are good by who they are as a person. It's really disturbing we are now in 2020 and we still have this division.

it''s funny to me, how afraid adults are to talk about skin color with kids. We will do almost anything to avoid saying "black" or "white" or any other race. Today i was reading a book with a 2 year old toddler in my class. The book was about bath time and it showed how the different babies would play with toys and play with the soap and the water. One of the babies in the book has dark skin. imediately the child i was reading to pointed out that the black baby had the skin color of a black child in the classroom. All I said was, "yes, that's right, that baby has the same skin color as ________" isn't she a cute baby? i turned the page and there was a white baby. I said "Aww, look, that baby looks like you." It was very simple but, if i were to ignore the child pointing out the different colors, what would that help? Why not point out that all the babies in the book are cute?

This was 2012 and yet now we're in the later part of 2020 and things are still the same, if not worse. I really do find it shocking that parents send this message to their kids. I am white and have two kids aged 5 and 3, one is at nursery and one is in school and I cannot imagine telling my kids that they cannot play with other kids because they are a different skin colour! To me, that's like telling someone you don't like them because they have a different eye colour or different colour hair. My 3 year old is a little young to grasp the concept but I have talked to my 5 year old about how her school friends, several of who are either Asian/Indian or black/mixed race and I have asked her if she's sees how they are different. She fully understands that she has "pinky white skin" (her words) and some of her friends have the same as her and some have "brown and black skin" but as she says, "they have beautiful skin and I love all my friends". That is how we are raising our kids...to see the (obvious) differences, but also to know that it doesn't define someone and we can all get along, whether white, brown, black or any other shade. It is something that makes the world interesting and exciting and that it would be boring if we were all the same. Just like there are different hair colours and eye colours, there are different skin colours. I have also told her that if she ever hears or sees someone bullying one of her friends because they are a different skin colour to her, the right thing to do is step up and say that it doesn't matter and being mean about someone's skin colour is bad and if that means telling a teacher, that's what she should do. If I found out that either of them had been mean to someone about their skin colour, I would verbally whoop their asses because I will not tolerate racism from my kids. Education begins at home and it is the parents' job first and foremost to raise their kids to respect everyone, regardless of how much or how little melanin they have in their body...because that's what it boils down to.

I just remembered what my comment to this was 9 years ago. My initial reaction was to hate the white kids. Today, I have a different view. I strongly dislike their parents and whoever has led them on the wrong path! I cannot hate these kids though. Sadly they are misguided! I feel bad for them. I can only hope that since this video they have learned to open themselves to a better way of life, but I know that is a pipe dream. Maybe one day we can not be judged by skin color. I won't see it in my lifetime but I hope my grandchildren or great grandchildren can live in a better world.

My parents NEVER instilled racist attitudes in me and I was "anti-racist" for most of my life. But now, I truly believe that blacks and whites are significantly different, not just in skin color but also in intelligence and temperament. I don't hate blacks (at all) and I believe that blacks and whites can be friends, but I no longer believe in total integration at any cost. Does this make me a "racist"? No, I don't think so. I think racial consciousness and tribal identity is completely natural, normal and healthy.

In the mid 90s, I experienced ( caucasian btw) racism for the first time in school when I became friends with an African American boy when I was in the 4th grade! I still was friends with him, but I was bullied more then he. I was called "jungle fever" by other 4th graders and other ugly names. What the hell? Then I was made fun of for being friends with a Cuban girl. I was friends with both for years until they moved a different state despite the hate. I've been stubborn and independent since as long as I remember and never let hateful people tell me or stop me from being friends with anyone. Just because we had people teaching us hate doesn't mean we have to continue it. Important to think for ourselves early on. I teach my boys to think for themselves, stick up for whoever and be friends with whoever. 💞✌😊

My father is Puerto Rican he was born in a town named Manatí in that area the Puerto Rican people were predominantly light skinned with maybe blue or green eyes and they did not like dark skinned Puerto Rican’s. And watch the channel 42 or Univision most actors and actresses and anchorman and women are white or rather Europeans. Mexicans are descendent of Aztec Indians not Europeans. If you’re Hispanic and can pass for a white person some not all will be racist against his or her countryman.
