Most missions are preplanned and meticulously scrutinized before an errant splash can harm friendlies, btw. We would literally rather deny fire missions even if a unit became overrun by enemy action than hit friendlies due to probability of error.

Dominic: I was in Ukraine in 2005. 2 weeks with my Church choir and one week at a TECHNICAL INSTITUTE (which will go un-named). I found, intellectually, the Ukrainians to be TOP NOTCH. I think, some of the wonderful "information" if examined closely..will lead a lot more Orcs to "dead ends", and I DO mean DEAD ENDS. So have FAITH BROTHER! The Poles have always been rock solid allies since WW2 at least, freedom, democracy & rule of law runs through their veins! After England declared war on Hitler for illegally invading the Poles, they fought their hearts out and when the Nazis overran them about 20,000 Polish military men made it across occupied Europe to England to continue the fight for freedom & their homeland. After eventually convincing the British military & RAF they were capable, skillful enough pilots and up to the job of being able to defeat the Luftwaffe...the RAF took a seriously big chance on the Poles which was demonstrated by the huge trust Britain was giving them by creating a significant number of Polish fighter & bomber squadrons consisting of hundreds of extremely valuable RAF aircraft during a time when every squadron could mean the difference between England/Europe losing or winning the war. The RAF Poles had to swear loyalty to Poland and England and needless to say, as history shows, those brave, loyal Poles fought just as good and bravely as our British airmen. They killed loads of Germans, they played a significant role in helping us win the battle of Britain and Polish airmen participated in some way in practically all RAF operations in the European theater of WW2. By the time France fell to Germany in July 1940, 8,384 exhausted Polish airmen had made it to Britain in hopes of continuing their fight in the last stand/country able to fight in Europe. For the record before the French were defeated they only used 10% of the available Polish pilots because they looked down on them as inferior. When the scores were tallied up after the Battle of Britain it turned out that those brave Poles were credited with 13.2% of the total kills in the B of B...incredible! The RAF top brass said, the contribution of the Polish airmen flying with/under the RAF can not be underestimated in the overall victory of winning the Battle of Britain. So yeah, Ukraine and any NATO partner couldn't wish for better allies than the Poles, they won't let you down...just like us Brits. Slava Ukraine!!!

He's going to need some help from more experienced soldiers to set up defenses for his position. The experience to analyze terrain and likely avenues of advance by an enemy to best defend attacks is a different skill set that doesn't build on his civilian experience. Using the computer equipment and being adept at math helps compute fire missions. So he's not useless as some might suggest. But he's not going to be the one to set up the defensive perimeter should it come down to this. So he's pressed into service due to his specialty, and can make use of it. But he's not a fully trained soldier. Is he ready should the Russians get desperate enough to deploy chemical rounds? Does he know how to don his protective gear and administer a nerve agent antidote kit to a soldier in convulsions? Just want folks to recognize this for what it is. I'm glad he's there and don't wish to downplay his value on the battlefield. Just want people to have realistic expectations and understand the limitations here.

@@buffuniballer Interestingly, I was in the Artillery and did surveys and computing fire missions too. You mention specialised medical skills such as administering a nerve agent antidote. I was never trained to do that, and doubt if many soldiers are. I did do a medical course also, including being trained in a casualty department (by civilian nurses and doctors). You have to remember that soldiers learn skills applicable to their Corps. It is no surprise that Artillery people are not really trained as Infantry, although maybe they should be. I just think that the Army overrates soldiers and underrates civilians sometimes. I think that skills are learnt throughout life, and that the ability to adapt depends on the person.

The USA so far giving 10 billion or so to Ukraine is a big deal, but the amount of sacrifice Poland and Romania are giving is much much higher. Advice to the West from an ordinary guy in Shymkent, Kazakhstan: I hear that the Western countries are afraid of Russia's great deception of "using nuclear weapons". This is simply a ploy to easily destroy Ukraine and then avoid Western interference in efforts to restore the former alliance. Even if Russia has advanced 1 km in Ukraine, the problem should be taken very seriously. Do not indulge in all kinds of sweet dreams. Western measures against Russia are surprising. Correct measures. But this also seems to work very little. Because China and India are supporting the Russian invasion by trading with Russia. This is actually an attempt to strengthen the invader. Maybe: 1. The USA should give Russia the status of "Aggressor" and not "Sponsor of Terrorism". No country should trade with a country that has such status. Or the name of the status given to Russia should be made very soft. But transfer the list of prohibitions that apply to a state with "sponsor of terrorism" status to the list of prohibitions that apply to a state with that soft status. 2. If necessary, open a second front for Russia, perhaps in Syria or Iran. Let him withdraw his armed forces from Ukraine to Syria. But the opening of a new front on the Russian border is an opportunity for Russia to conquer new territories. Don't forget that either.

Which is why there are field workshops. To explain: a shell spinning down a gun tube wears the grooves, the explosion sends bits of cartridge casing after it, a gun barrel will last a hundred rounds before accuracy starts to deteriorate. It would, in the medium term, be unbelievable if the UN were not to withdraw the Russian Permanent Seat on the Security Council after this.
