For Anthony Bourdain, happiness is eating something delicious in a bowl that he can't quite identify as scooters go by.

Those bowls of com hến Huế and bún hến Huế most likely cost 20.000₫ or about $.86 USD each. Huế (where that scene was shot) has some of the best food in Viet Nam. I've been there many times and use to live 2.5 hours to the south in tp. Da Nang, also one of the great food cities of the world. BTW he wasn't kidding about the fish sauce. That wasn't the standard and mild nước mắm but mắm nêm that can double as paint stripper. Search YT for the video "My favorite dish | Summer Le" for a great intro to it.

Sudhir Kakar I grew up in France with french and khmere/vietnamese meals from my parents. They're all delicious and different on their own, don't know wich i prefer but I for sure can't leave without any of them :D
@AP-yy3ve4 жыл бұрын
@Sudhir Kakar You know the french had cultural food influence in most asian countries like vietnam so saying it's better than the french... that's a double negative considering most of the recipes they used are from each other, and better yet evolved better.

I know what he means now. Ever since I went to Korea, there's a certain feeling about being lost in another country, eating good food, and being around people who are almost nothing like you but also the same people born in a different place. It shows you how small you are but how you can enjoy life so much by looking back. You don't need to think, just feel and be free.

I went to Vietnam in 2016, 2017 and 2018 because of Anthony Bourdain and this episode. When it was mentioned that Anthony Bourdain killed himself I immediately thought of the despair I felt when learning Robin Williams killed himself too and how I so badly wished I knew both of them and could've made them laugh or given them a sense of worth. I'm alone and am backpacking around the world since May 2016. I feel so sad.

For anyone who wants to rethink their comment please take this seriously. For those of you who aren’t willing to see the other side just keep on your path. No harm in your view. I enjoyed this as I did all of his work. There are two parts of a person...maybe more. His words in his lifelong work are something to take seriously and not to be brushed aside. I’ve seen many comments saying basically not to listen to this man because of how he died. I’m not here to judge that I’m here to say that although this man was experiencing a secret pain he was also enjoying life. I know many can’t comprehend that notion because they haven’t experienced it. But, I have. We all have different experiences with life and no one is as simple as they seem...no one. This man was not a corporate puppet...or as some have suggested..someone who is fed lines regardless of his feelings. This is a man who wouldn’t have done this video if he wasn’t allowed to be 100% authentic. Food can bring you joy, just as anything else. People who tell you otherwise don’t understand the pain of hunger. They don’t know what it’s like to have nothing to eat for days and then to finally have the ability to enjoy a meal. Or, a person who is lonely and misses friends or family...and finally gets to sit down at a table and talk to them and enjoy a meal together. There’s a difference between the person who treats people like crap just to stuff their face and a person enjoying their life and the blessing of having food on their table. Sleep, food, love and laughter. If you want to know what this man was about then you need to understand that at his core he was as simple as four words. There’s a sadness to life that can’t be explained but there is also a beauty to life that people will never allow you to explain. If you ignore wise words like his then you will miss a beautiful part of life.

i wish you were still alive to this day anthony. I don't think you would have done what you did if you really understood just how loved and valued you were. It hurt so many people when you went away. So many people looked up to you and you didn't even realize. It breaks my heart that you have left this world anthony. You weren't just some celebrity, you were a person we would happily invite into our home like so many people on your shows. WE LOVED you Anthony. Personally, you showed me that a punk rocker could be successful. You also showed that generally the average person in any country is a decent human being. You reshaped how the world views a punk kid. You didn't realize how the world regarded you. You are a treasure that has been lost Anthony. I'm sorry that we couldn't keep you in this world brother, it's our loss that you're gone. You gave us a new view on far away places not just the food but more importantly the people. You were, whether you realize it or not an ambassador to america. You introduced us to new food and culture. Often through your jaded lens, we got to see the good and the bad. We appreciated your honest look at situations. The world loved you Anthony, there was love for you everywhere. I'm just sorry you didn't feel or find it. Your fans would have done anything to keep you in this world. I think that both anthony and robin williams are icons that we didn't deserve but needed.
