If that’s what you took away from this rather than the horrendous havoc the CCP wants to wreak on you (Assuming you live in the US/Canada/Australia etc) your priorities are wayyyy off. Plus, Chinese nationals undercover in the US are the #1 way the CCP currently steals our corporate intellectual property and trade secrets. So while of course a lot of Chinese Americans are here explicitly to get away from the oppressive ways of the CCP or at the very least have no desire to return and live under their heal, it’s not that black and white. Plus people in China have been so brainwashed against us they too have sadly become a threat due to the fact their government has cruelly turned them into one for their own benefit

As someone who works in IT industry, the problem with civilian infrastructure are companies who refuse to bring their infrastructure up to the level needed for security. Putting a high priority on IT infrastructure and expertise should be a priority over profits at this time. Unfortunately smaller businesses and small towns will respond reactively possible without power or running water.

They will always be a threat because we refuse to give developers the necessary time and resources to perform their jobs well. We’d prefer to hit an arbitrary deadlines so sales people and execs can make their bonuses. Cyber security is a problem because we do everything as cheaply and quickly as possible. Soon we will learn that the internet should have been built like bridges but it was built like video games.

Bribing individual politicians can be relatively benign depending what they want. If it is just market access, approvals etc it doesn't hurt the whole country that much. But China wants to take Taiwan, and sees US is hopelessly weakened by Russian purchase of some politicians. It may get a lot worse in 2024 if Dems fall for the splitting 3rd party / alleged indie candidates or stay home. US could realistically be crippled by 2025 so China needs to be ready to pounce on Taiwan. Infrastructure meltdown could be useful to hurt national morale & trust in govt.

It’s news because the technology is now at a place where it’s all come together. The gaps that might have been there years ago when implementing an attack, have now been taken care of. Everything is more streamlined now and we are more reliant on technology than ever before. Years ago, we might have had one foot in technology and one foot in doing things manually. Now we have two feet in technology. Every aspect of life is a push of a button.

My experience has been that public schools here in the US don’t teach computer literacy. If they do it’s an elective. Also the cyber job market is highly competitive often requiring people to have years of experience before landing entry level positions. China seems to be doing a better job of bringing their people into cyber. We have the talent in the US just not the willingness to invest in people.

The technologies of the 50s, 60s and 70s already required a lot of technological mastery and energy, particularly oil. Unfortunately, in the event of a conflict with a power such as China in 2024, these technologies would not be of much help. If I follow your reasoning we should also have a backup system in case the oil runs out and hope that the American army has preserved steam engines, coal, horse-drawn carts, sailing boats and all the weapons dating from the Civil War otherwise we would have difficulty defending ourselves against the Chinese if we came into conflict with them... I'm not convinced that this is the right option. I hope the US government and its military have developed better options. If you flatten a tire on the highway, the old wooden wheel inherited from your great-grandfather won't be of much use to you.

As an electrician I can assure you that there is no need for a web vulnerable critical infrastructure everything should have hard wire and human isolation capabilities. Any attack shouldn’t be more than an inconvenience to jump into plan old school. If you have a system that can be disrupted via internet or mag pulse or power problems then the fault is yours. It’s like having a self driving car without any pedals steering or shut off available for the driver. Don’t cripple us with convenience.

EXACTLY. And my family thought it was crazy to ever think they could target us like that. It’s a total possibility BUT the movie does have one assumption that I believe couldn’t be true. And that’s that the American people are that dumb to stoop so low without wireless communication. Paranoia isn’t the main cause for internal conflict of a government system. I believe we would overcome the idea of our fear of not knowing exceeds that of reason and rationality. For example, in the movie there is an assumption that multiple countries are out to get us via fear tactics and confusion with a side of zero wireless communication. But there are other avenues for communication that doesn’t involve the internet. That AND the fact that we still defend ourselves from such attacks. The government would find some way of informing everyone about what exactly is taking place but in the movie, it’s COMPLETE loss of communication AND reason, when I know that would not happen entirely. Americans aren’t fooled that easily

Again I'm not an expert so I barely know what I'm talking about. Also, making whatever cyber infrastructure that is important more robust, again cutting down and simplifying things that could do without complicated tech. One thing about nerds and bourucrats, i.e. ( gov. Officials) they like to make things ( sometimes ) complicated more than necessary. Just build robustness. That question is very interesting and I'm pretty sure someone more knowledgeable can comment on how unnecessarily government uses cyber technology. Bring back the mores code. You can't hack something that is already out in the plain. As far as defense infrastructur I don't know. All I know is the entire tech world isseries of 0 and 1 s so no matter how complicated on the surface it is there should be an alternative... Idk I'm taking a shit as I'm writing this fyi. Also what does a cyber world mean ?
