I think sometimes judges wait for the contestants to reach a particularly hard part (either a note that needs to be belted or a note that needs to be held for a long while) and see if they can get through it successfully before buzzing. If they buzz early and the note ends being flat or short it can ruin the whole 90 seconds of the audition.
