New archer and i was using a shallow hook thinking it would be a better release. While looking at other things I happened upon a deeper stronger hook and immediately felt more confident and got better shots. Glad I happened upon this post and could watch you demonstrate this. Thanks

Just found your channel, love this advice. Been shooting 6 months and really trying to dial into the process as barebow, instead of club recruve coaches 'helping' me

My brother had bad target panic, literally shooting the floor in front of him while drawing at one point and blank bale did absolutely nothing to help him but it's what everyone told him to do and it really annoyed him when someone mentioned it. What he told me is he already knows what the release is supposed to feel like but it's aiming at a target that causes the panic and shooting a blank bale doesn't help fix that. What fixed it for him is shooting a large target super close until he could hold a draw on it and then pushing the target further back and making it smaller. blank bale is great for other stuff but I'm not convinced it's much help for some forms of target panic

Hook and anchor location as well as length of crawl all play a role in smashing the nose

really interesting to see the hook differences. I'm having all sorts of the same issues at the moment with hook and release. Thanks for the great video.

If I've had any of these problems? I've had them all plus more! :D I really enjoy your video's and podcasts. I don't do Facebook so miss out on that bit so more stuff like this would be great. :) All of you guys at the Barebow Project are my heroes! I got into archery far too late in life and have been missing out on so much. But I'm here now and have been shooting for a grand total of 16 months. In that short time, I've made a name for myself as being the "perfectionist" in my club. I won a bronze in my first competition after 10 months of shooting, won my clubs indoor league and came third in our outdoor league. Hopefully there will be more to come in the future.... Only now am I starting to work on my form. Something I should have started with! My club doesn't have any coaches and there's none nearby, so I'm left fending for myself and trying to learn online. Maybe someday I'll do a video so everyone on KZbin can tell me where I'm going wrong... Anyway... Keep up the great work and keep the info flowing!

look at your release fingers after the shot. if they are straight, you commanded the shot. if the fingers are still bent, you allowed the shot to happen correctly.

It’s not that cut and dry. Correct is a relative term to individual shooters. Demmer’s fingers are straight and relaxed after the shot. Can’t say his shots are correct.

@@TheBarebowProject when you let your arms relax and hang by your side, look at your fingers. they are not straight but slightly curved. that is what relaxed fingers look like. to straighten your fingers, you must use your forearm muscles. what I was saying is that if you let your shot cycle use your subconscious mind instead of your conscious mind, your fingers will have A SLIGHT CURVE after the release. if your fingers are straight after the release, you used your conscious mind to release the arrow. Demmer uses a conscious mind to release. there is nothing wrong with that release if you can control your mind. the problem with controlled releases (command release rather than a surprise release) is that you run a much higher risk of getting target panic. the human mind will not let you accept impact if it knows it is coming. with a subconscious ( surprise) release, there is no preparation for impact and then a cleaner shot cycle. an example is blind bale shooting. look at your fingers. there are several extremely high level archers that use command releases. look at Paige Pearce. fantastic archer with a command release. looking at your fingers after the release simply let you know if you mentally made the shot happen or let it happen naturally.

@@dd3172 JD3’s release is subconscious but he stays into the conscious mind well into the aim. Comparing Paige to Barebow shooter is apples n oranges. A subconscious compound shot is great and frankly proper as long as the transfer to hold is completed. All subconscious in Barebow opens the door to target panic every time. The whole bracing for impact thing isn’t accurate either., that sounds like sound bites from ShotIQ 😆 Grayson is probably the closest to a conscious release than anyone but still leaves a little moment at the end of each shot for that to creep in. He has talked about it many times. I agree with finger position and what it should look like after the release but saying finger position dictates conscious and subconscious release soley isn’t accurate at all. Where most coaches and Barebow shooters error is where, when and how to separate the conscious mind and allow the subconscious to take over. ~FMcD

This is good stuff :D If I could make a small suggestion, when you're doing this kind of stuff, I think it'd be better to have a camera on the target face as well to illustrate howsmall changes affect the shot :)

Good stuff, Frank. It would seem that the deeper hook , moving the string away from your face, would change your string blur. Is this something you just notice, adapt to, and ignore?

What's the deal with the two motions to anchor? Why not just draw straight to your anchor? Where's the advantage?
@TheBarebowProject
@TheBarebowProject 4 жыл бұрын
gblan there is still a slight angular style draw that allows me to get into better alignment. Therefore the draw cycle is still one movement but I draw back and come up from the bottom into anchor similar to setting the shelf of a tab under the chin with an Oly anchor.

Nice video, but there's a better way to release and it's called the STAR Method...
@davida.4933
@davida.4933 4 жыл бұрын
If you go to my videos you can see me employing it although I don't give an explanation. Also a video testimony from an Olympic coach even though I was using a short 54" hunting bow...many think the method is not real, but you can look at some of the other videos if you are interested. I primarily developed it as real world hunting method, but there are applications to target archery...it is a big method with numerous variations (and not only a release method)...

I love this video. But I must query one thing. I thought that open or closed stance will have no effect on chest clearance because if you’re doing a correct open stance when you rotate and stay in alignment chest clearance will be identical in both cases. The only difference would be clearance against the legs. Which shouldn’t be an issue
