Tristar Gym hey coach Firas great video, I'm only 5'6" so I love information like this, as even average size is still bigger and taller. I did have a question though. your statement towards the end about not wanting to wrestle a taller opponent, caught me off guard. I thought that wrestling and BJJ was a great equalizer when it comes to size. with a lower center of gravity and leverage. I am a natural grappler, and normally this is my goal, not to stand and bang with those that have long reach, but get inside and get the takedown? And here you seem to advocate the opposite, saying wrestling on the inside favors the bigger taller opponent?

This is great stuff, Coach Firaz. I'm a follower of your videos. They provide practical and immediately applicable techniques. My question about fighting a taller opponent is how do you deal with his knees and elbows? Donald Cerrone for instance has a wicked knee which he uses effectively to meet opponents who slip and blitz in. Jon Jones throws killer elbows in mid-range and from the tie up. Thanks again and looking forward to your response.

This is great! As a very tall Bantamweight, I am never matched against longer or taller opponents, so this is great if I flip the script and use it to know what to avoid. Just a thought, I always hate body punches from shorter fighters more than anything else in the world. There's more torque and they dont have to drop level as much to land. Plus they tend to punch upwards so it doesnt do as much when to the face.

I love Firas. I've been watching The UFC since i was in middle school around 2000 - 2001 or so. As I became more and more of fan I began to obviously follow certain guys but i was still basically a casual. Back then i loved Tito Ortiz and Ken Shamrock which goes to show you i didnt know shit lol. Eventually I started understanding the sport much more but somehow I was never a fan of GSP. Being 32 years old now over 20 years into this shit I understand georges game much more and respect it. The wrestling used to lose me whereas now i get that wrestling is huge. All this being said it wasnt until a few years ago that I learned of Firas Zahabi and I became a huge fan of his. His mind is brilliant. Wether its fighting or other things such as philosophy. His JRE episode where him and Joe end it with a phenomenal discussion on the philosophy of science is one of my top 3 favorite JRE episodes. That hour long discussion blew my mind and made me a Firas fan for life. Keep it up brother

I have a wuestion. In 3 minutes in when the opponent grabs high under the underhooks and you dont drop your weight, i see w techniwue here they csn do without switching to a lower grip but wonder something about it. Why do they teach it in greco roman to put the opposite foot forward and switch feet then turn them to the side rsther thsn the natursl foot thst is across? Lets day you have the underhooks and make them step back with opposite foot across each other in close distance. But in wrestling they always teach to switch feet then and then turn them to the ground. I always wondered why?

No offense Coach but I have a couple questions! 1. When you sag your hips, what's to stop the guy doing a basic Tai-otoshi or Osoto gari? These are judo throws that work well when a person sags and puts all their weight on their feet. 2. When you frame the face. What stops him from turning away and doing a basic hip throw when you give him space to get his hips in? 3. When you frame on the face, are you not giving the taller man a Russian tie? Again I'm a big fan of your videos, and your mentality and philosophy! I can't wait to watch more and wish you nothing but the best!

what would be the breakdown on how to defeat connor mc gregor, seems like only nate diaz managed it being good on his feet, outboxing connor. seems legitimate to think closing the distance and wrestling, taking him to the ground. circling away from that left hand. avoiding footwork traps that he may use to trap you and being careful of your movement, use lots of kicks since he is unlikely to take you down. and work him while being cautious so he gets dragged into the later rounds where he is known to get tired. but every time a fighter steps against him they swing wildly and really dont perform. what is the game plan for him?

Thank you for the video it’s a very well done documentation on how you should counteract a toll fighter I noticed Colby Covington does a lot of this he’s a monster against the fence similar to Khabib I also noticed the tall opponent never was on the aggressive side I believe if he had turned up the pace and forced you to react to him it would’ve been a little different he’s been a thermometer not a thermostat a thermometer reacts to it surroundings a thermostat changes its surroundings something to think about I would love your feedback
