There wouldn't be enough room to throw punches and if you tried to defend with punches then you're going to get slammed like Tito did to Evan Tanner. Tristar Gym hey coach Firas great video, I'm only 5'6" so I love information like this, as even average size is still bigger and taller. I did have a question though. your statement towards the end about not wanting to wrestle a taller opponent, caught me off guard. I thought that wrestling and BJJ was a great equalizer when it comes to size. with a lower center of gravity and leverage. I am a natural grappler, and normally this is my goal, not to stand and bang with those that have long reach, but get inside and get the takedown? And here you seem to advocate the opposite, saying wrestling on the inside favors the bigger taller opponent?

It would however be nice to see how he holds up against a real middleweight trying hard to knock him out (during the stand up exchanges) and has outstanding Jujitsu and wrestling ability to control the fight on the ground. Yes, he's bigger and taller, but he has ZERO musculature or power! He's essentially a 6'3" ECTOMORPH! And Ectomorphs (I'm one) are so lanky that they have no power & little center of gravity. Notice how he's moved around so easily and when they clinch, he can't get a single takedown! A real 6'3" MESOMORPH with real muscle, would've body slammed Zahabi 10x in that "fight" and his punches would've staggered Zahabi. I'm guessing this is supposed to approximate a street fight but in a real street fight, the second the fighter with the greater body mass grabs you, you're going down! And once on top of you, you'll be "grounded & pounded". At 6'3" tall, this guy SHOULD'VE REALISTICALLY been a HEAVYWEIGHT NOT A MIDDLEWEIGHT! I'm sorry but I just don't buy this at all - totally unrealistic even for just a demo. IMHO.

I love Firas. I've been watching The UFC since i was in middle school around 2000 - 2001 or so. As I became more and more of fan I began to obviously follow certain guys but i was still basically a casual. Back then i loved Tito Ortiz and Ken Shamrock which goes to show you i didnt know shit lol. Eventually I started understanding the sport much more but somehow I was never a fan of GSP. Being 32 years old now over 20 years into this shit I understand georges game much more and respect it. The wrestling used to lose me whereas now i get that wrestling is huge. All this being said it wasnt until a few years ago that I learned of Firas Zahabi and I became a huge fan of his. His mind is brilliant. Wether its fighting or other things such as philosophy. His JRE episode where him and Joe end it with a phenomenal discussion on the philosophy of science is one of my top 3 favorite JRE episodes. That hour long discussion blew my mind and made me a Firas fan for life. Keep it up brother

Good insight into how to beat a taller opponent. However, how would you fight a smaller opponent who uses these techniques?

I agree with this but in mma wouldnt sagging your hips like this leave your legs pretty vulnerable to a single, double, and a variety of trips? I do completely understand this aspect completely if it’s for kickboxing tips though. Just curious

No offense Coach but I have a couple questions! 1. When you sag your hips, what's to stop the guy doing a basic Tai-otoshi or Osoto gari? These are judo throws that work well when a person sags and puts all their weight on their feet. 2. When you frame the face. What stops him from turning away and doing a basic hip throw when you give him space to get his hips in? 3. When you frame on the face, are you not giving the taller man a Russian tie? Again I'm a big fan of your videos, and your mentality and philosophy! I can't wait to watch more and wish you nothing but the best!

Tried to deny myself, but couldnt help it.. To some people criticizing this demo about technique, "opponent" or uselesness in real combat: a) partner is there to help demonstrate the movement, not to fight Zahabi b) drill is not about closing distance rather than getting out of clinch, which taller opponents usually do (to answer those "what if knees, what if teeps etc") c) when you are skilled and drill/spar with equally trained friend, you both develop a sense on what kind of pressure/speed and power you can apply in order to have a good one (in case these two are even sparring in the video..) Had to, I'm sorry in advance =D

Floyd mayweather uses this techniqie ALOT. Only boxer ive ever seen do this. Mike Tyson would have been so much more effective against bigger guys when they used to tie him up if he'd used this technique.

I agree on alot on what you're saying brother, but this tall guy ain't good to use his lenght and isn't good at stand up. So you will have a different approach with an another tall guy who's lot better at using his distance and got good stand up skills. Not saying that the tall guy in this vid ain't good, he might be so. But as an earlier muay thai fighter I would recommend these tall dudes to regularely take 1 weekly muay thai session. And spar at least 1 time every 2. week. When devolping great stand up skills, then they can just take 1 training session with sparring every 2nd week. Just an honest advice brother. Thanks for sharing your knowledge, salam.

A good rangy fighter beats a good spark plug almost every time. Long frames are the best body type for mma. Lean guys dont tank as quikly, their length can control range, and long limbs are a great asset whem implementing folk style wrestling, which in my opinion is the most effective form of wrestling for mma. Long fighters are a fucking nightmare for shorter opponents when the fight goes into deep waters.

Oh geez. This is like watching an akido "master" throw around his students. The taller guy didn't even try to keep you at range. Pretty sure a knee up the middle everytime firas bum rushed him would do the trick. I have no doubt firas is a talented teacher but this is randori not fighting

what would be the breakdown on how to defeat connor mc gregor, seems like only nate diaz managed it being good on his feet, outboxing connor. seems legitimate to think closing the distance and wrestling, taking him to the ground. circling away from that left hand. avoiding footwork traps that he may use to trap you and being careful of your movement, use lots of kicks since he is unlikely to take you down. and work him while being cautious so he gets dragged into the later rounds where he is known to get tired. but every time a fighter steps against him they swing wildly and really dont perform. what is the game plan for him?

I mean at 4:30 in the video firas threw his whole body weight into the punch and the student kinda tied him up. Out of respect for his coach I'm sure. But in reality he could have dumped firas on his head. This is role play. I wanna see how good firas really is.

who the hell asks how to fight a taller opponent? probably people that never been in fights. anyway, just take him to the ground. the taller the guy is, the less balance he has and its easier to take him to the ground. also, the taller your opponent is, the harder it will be for him to be effective on the ground because of long limbs and being all over the place. if its not for overall fighting but only striking, just get closer to him and work from the inside. its that easy. the hard part is to actually do it of course, never said otherwise, but thats the path, nothing complicated.

This is great but as a tall fighter lanky fighter as you explained that I am I always make sure that the little guys slip or duck you're getting either straight punches or uppercuts coming straight at you when you're smaller than me I am keeping you at the end of my punch😂

I have a wuestion. In 3 minutes in when the opponent grabs high under the underhooks and you dont drop your weight, i see w techniwue here they csn do without switching to a lower grip but wonder something about it. Why do they teach it in greco roman to put the opposite foot forward and switch feet then turn them to the side rsther thsn the natursl foot thst is across? Lets day you have the underhooks and make them step back with opposite foot across each other in close distance. But in wrestling they always teach to switch feet then and then turn them to the ground. I always wondered why?
