You can tell Stallings is a true Bear Bryant disciple. Demeanor. Voice. Presence.

Greatest football game of all time every body in the world was running down Bama saying that didn't have a chance against the mighty Cane's and then Bama proceeded to kick a little behind it was awesome.

Can't help but like Gene Stallings either. It is easy to like Dabo, because that good ol boy act is not an act. The day they demand that Dabo start being a jerk to be like some of these other successful coaches that treat these kids like dirt is the day he will quit.

And LOVE LOVE LOVE Coach Stallings.

You gotta love how honest Stallings is as a human being. After being complimented by Dabo, Stallings is asked if he had seen anything special in Dabo while he played at Alabama. At the 5:06 mark, Stalling say "Not particularly, because he was an average player." Dabo's reaction is funny. But, the truth is that Dabo was an average player, who was also an above average human being. Stallings trusted Dabo's character and work ethic, and gave him his first coaching job. Dabo listened,. learned and then surpassed his teacher.

This is a great video. More to life than just football.

That's a good thing! The best coaches were typically average players themselves. Gene Stallings was an average player. So was Jimmy Johnson, Barry Switzer, Bear Bryant, Bobby Bowden, Urban Meyer, Woody Hayes, and even Nick Saban. If they played on the D-1 level they were mostly just backups, or they were invisible phantoms playing at directional state university in a conference that doesn't even exist anymore. The only real exception to this rule is Steve Spurrier. Spurrier's the only person in NCAA history to have won a national championship as a coach, and a Heisman Trophy as a player. (I suppose you could make an argument for Jim Harbaugh, but it's become painstakingly obvious he's either lost his touch completely, or was always overrated and simply benefitted from being in the right place at the right time)

I live in Georgia but I remember coach Stallings very well. Always classy and wasn't into running up the score on weak opponents like Nebraska and Oklahoma did in those days.
@paleo7043 жыл бұрын
Good comment but don’t forget early BCS days had a criteria in their calculation of “margin of victory”. Forced a lot of these schools to pour it on weaker opponent s
