1. Off ice warmup 2. Forward strokes (squeeze glutes) 3. Forward swizzles, then twist to each side. Then add arm rotations. 4. Two foot slalow (keep feet together, rotate upper body) 5. Backward swizzles, then twist to each side, then add arm rotations 6. Crossovers or Half pumps (make figure 8) 7. Backward crossovers or Half pumps (make figure 8)

Thanks for breaking down moves. I find it more informative than lessons, and I can hear you and your not bored with the crowded process at rinks.

Thanks Julia! Your tutorials are really helpful as a beginner skater in my mid life (just turned 50 😲 learning basic 4 skate level). Classes are short (group) and at my rink they’re mixed age groups. So what fearless little people are learning is much scarier for an older adult. I find your tutorials a huge help as I try to remember what you say during the classes as you show step by step each skill…so thank you!

I have used the same warm up for a year and I just change it up every now and then and always do it to my music and change my pace and what order i do everything
@CoachJulia2 жыл бұрын
That works! So long as you are doing some kind of warm up!

This is exactly my skill level, so very useful for me. thanks a lot. I was certainly not warming up my upper body enough so far. I don't think I will be able to do the crossover 8s in a busy public session where I can skate, but I will just use the middle circle in both directions.
@CoachJulia2 жыл бұрын
Yeah, the middle circle would be a good substitute! 😁

i like this warmup because i’m brand new to figure skating (and pretty new to ice skating in general) so this is what i’m aiming for as my full practice right now 😅 i like that it is a good overview of the basic movements i need to master! i practiced swizzles and half pumps today and i’m going to work more on backwards movements next! thanks!

Thank you for your videos. I am a mature adult finally learning to skate in UK. Your videos help me with what I am learning as you break things down and I can rewatch over. Sometimes it is hard to hear the instructor if there are a lot of students in the skating class.

Can’t wait to do this. I get bored just strolling around the rink. This should also strengthen my ankles so I can better stand on one leg on the ice.

I got a minor yet painful injury while rollerskating last summer, and since then I've been so scared to fall on my butt that I tend lean forward when I skate, so this video is very helpful to fix that bad habit. Thank you, coach!

Great detailed On Ice warm up Coach Julia. I also do off ice warm up too. One important point is to try to be EARLY for Figure skating class or going to a public skate. This allows full off ice warm up without causing muscle or joint strains, AND gives time to get foot seated in boot with ankle in boot heel, for me i do have at times a bit of swelling of foot and ankle, so being early that issue can be addressed with boot correctly seated in boot with proper lace tension. Sad part is I see my classmates for Saturday group figure skating class ARRIVE 5 minutes before class, yes some have done home off ice warm up yet, under FIVE minutes to get feet into boots and laced OH O. It get worse when the kids come in after our session LATE no off ice warm up nor time to get boot warm and CORRECTLY laced. All this can cause falls and injury to the skater and classmates .
@CoachJulia2 жыл бұрын
I agree wholeheartedly with arriving early and getting a good warm up. I have students who come to their lesson and arrive right at the scheduled start time. No off-ice warm up, no on-ice warm up, nothing. Definitely not a good strategy for improvement or safety.

Thank you Julia, excellent video. Right for my level. I can't wait for my next time on the ice this week to follow the routine. Certainly it'll help me a lot as in the level pursuing backwards crossover, glade in one feet, checking position after crossover backwards or an spin. Yesterday, learning to do the check position after two foot spin, I just held my leg behind 3 seconds which for me is a great achievement!!. By the way, beautiful wedding. Congratulations!!!

Ah this is awesome - I've actually cobbled together a fairly similar warmup in terms of steps, but with simpler arm stretches - will try out your suggestions. The core twists will be really good, and that arm roll and then leaving the hand behind the back might help me battle the tendency my left arm/shoulder have to keep coming in front of my body right when I want them to go behind (eg trying to balance a spiral - it's like they've got a mind of their own!) 😄
@CoachJulia2 жыл бұрын
I am so glad you like it and see the benefit of those arm movements!

Thank you for the tips. I realized that I wasn’t really warming up my arms. Maybe that’s why I hardly ever get to the backspin position during jumps… And for curiosity sake, I went over to watch your warmup routine and saw cross steps…(my other coach calls them cross rolls) I’ve been trying to do them for warmups for a while, but kind of put them aside for now. (Mostly because they need more room than other moves. Our rink has speed skaters as well, so the rink has the center area for figures, inner track for the speeders, and outer track for public/warmups) But still, if you can do a tutorial on them…please? And finally…what a week full of videos!
@CoachJulia2 жыл бұрын
Yeah, it's been a busy video week! Lol. I would be happy to do a video dedicated to cross rolls for you. I will put it on my list.

Hi Coach Julia, first of all thanks for all the videos, im just learning how to ice skate as an adult 2 months ago, taking group lesson once a week with some practices on my own, and all your videos has helped a lot. i can comfortably go forward, turn and stop, and a bit of going backwards. But I keep bending at the waist and my butt popping out, does not look pretty at all. But if i try to be more upright, i feel like im falling backwards. I have been told previously my recreational skates are not the best by a few people, and 1 person pointed out that too much of my weight is at my heel instead of mid foot and toes. is it my equipment issue? or just posture issue? if so, what can i do so i dont keep falling backwards when i try to be more upright?

As usual I’m somewhere in the middle of the beginner and advanced (also hi from an assistant coach Julia who’s also in California lol) - what I do is a lap of forward stroking, F and B swizzles, F and B 2 foot slaloms, F and B Russian stroking, F and B 1 foot power pulls, F and B cross strokes. So basically half of each version😂

ok, so that figure 8 stuff might be doable in a freestyle session, but a public skate session ..???? Yeah, not happening. Big difference between nobody on the ice and spending every other stroke dodging some clueless kid along with a rink FULL of people during public skate. Just Sayin. Do a warm up video for public skate / crowded rink. Beginners skate the public skate session. Experienced skaters go to the freestyle session. None of that big arm movement stuff when someone is passing you every 5 seconds. Reality calling. Not being mean, just trying to be real world here.
