Coal Trains in the Hunter Valley - 6 Nov 2013: Australian Trains

Freight traffic along the NSW Main Northern line through the Hunter Valley at Lochinvar, Minimbah Bank at the Golden Highway, Whittingham and Glennies Creek on Wednesday 6 November 2013.
Featured are the usual parade of coal trains from PN, QR National and Freightlinger/Xstrata plus an up Freightliner cotton train and the Cityrail services to Scone using a Hunter railcar set.
Included are several two and three way passes of coal trains, which is actually relatively common due to the amount of traffic!

Great videos of longgg trains.at about the 13:55 mark 2 trains pass each other going opposite directions but both appear to be empty.which was the direction for a full train to be going.

• The one on the seperate track has a short fill, you can just see coal in it. Notice how black the Locos are & the leading wagons? It has left the end of the Hunter Valley & gone up, over & through the Ardglen Tunnel, it's the steepest climb on the east coast, especially on the return trip where it would have had another trio of Locos attach to the end to assist it up the climb. The trip through the tunnel makes them choke on their own smoke. Also, the train is 20 wagons shorter than the ones operating inside the Hunter Valley & short filled to keep the wagon total weight down to 92 tonne, instead of the normal 120 tonnes. • Search for Ardglen & Ardglen Bankers for some more interesting videos. • Hope this helps, Tubby Lunchbox.😃

Are the power unit made in Australia or some other country? I notice the difference in the design of the coal cars or wagon in Australia then in the USA is there a reason for this? I notice three sets of tracks are two for coming and going coal trains and one for commercial trains? how are the cars or wagons unloaded from the bottom or do the tip them? Thanks for a very outstanding video as I love train videos. thanks again.

+John Moore The locos in this video are built locally with the power equipment (engine, etc...) imported from the USA. The design of the coal hoppers is partly due to the smaller loading gauge. The three tracks are simply due to the number of trains that run on this section. The hoppers are unloaded from the bottom, they don't tip them.

• The third line branches off the middle line & runs parallel & reconnects to the middle line after 6.7 miles. There are several mines that join the middle line in-between AND it evens out a particularly lumpy section and is a very gentle, continuous climb. • These are EMD & GE Loco manufactured in Australia for our peculiar conditions. Only in the Hunter Valley does the track allow 30 tonne axle loads allowing the wagons to Gross 120 tonnes & Locomotives 180 tonnes.(264,552 lbs/396,828lbs) • Only a small amount of the Locos seen are taking advantage of the extra weight. Most of what you see are 134 tonne Locos so are able to do freight around the rest of the country. • Cheers, Tubby Lunchbox :)

• The long trains with 80+ Wagons & only Two Loco's are using 5000 Class C40aci & 5020 Class C44acHi Goninan-GE Locos weighing in at 180 tonnes & AC Traction. They are 4250/4500 BHP 7FDL-16 GE powered & can use the extra weight for traction. • The numerous other Locos which look identical are C44aci which usual nearly the same AC Traction & identical engine, but are only 134 to 139 tonne enabling them to leave the Hunter Valley. • Cheers, Tubby Lunchbox 😃

It’s very rare to see a snake. I live in the country and I have seen 1 snake in 7 years. I know they are around but they generally keep out of the way.
