I have a knife sharpening business and will put 90 degree angle on the spines of knives both softer and harder rockwell. While a file indeed will not affect or be capable of sharpening a knife with higher rockwell, a belt sander or a diamond sharpening stone will do the job, with of course being careful and removing the smallest amount of material possible until you have the full aggressive 90 degrees. Helpful tip as belt sanders can be purchased cheap even a harbor freight one will do the job. Hope this helps folks and as always love your educational videos!

A 90-degree spine is fine, but isn't a necessity and mostly only a conniption concern with “bushcrafters” that live in a reality of unlikely hypotheticals and who feel they must start every fire with a ferro rod using their spine, or scrape every piece of fatwood/strip bark with the knife spine, or whatever else they pull out of their Alone fantasyland.

It works well to draw file the spine instead of the traditional filing method. Use a single cut file, hold an end in each hand, and draw it toward you down the length of the spine. Gives a consistent 90 all the way down the spine. You can do this with a stone as well as fine sand paper under a backer. Hope this helps.

I had a really hard knife that didn't have a very good spine and managed to make it 90 degrees with a coarse stone followed by a smoother stone. As far as I know they don't make knives that can't be reshaped/sharpened with a stone. That would be a use 'til dull, then throw away, knife. If a file "skates", then try a stone.

Hope I can help. Put the blade in a vise and lay the file perpendicular to the blade. Pull the file like a draw knife along the top of the blade. This should work better and reduce the chance of rounding over the 90* corner. Also if the file is softer than the blade, wrap some Silicon Carbide mesh or sandpaper around the file and preform the same drawknife like action.

My first bushcraft knife was a Mora Companion HD with a soft slightly rounded spine. I took a carbide scraper on the back of my Smiths field sharpener and scraped it to a sharp 90° spine. I have some knives, w/ & w/out a "90° spine", including 2 Mora's. The 1st Mora, a "Craftline Basic 511 High Carbon", has the back ("spine") filed to "90°". The 2nd in still 'factory'. Very hard knives can have a "90° spine" even if its too hard to file. A cheap 'carborundum' 'sharpening stone' can be used to flatten the back. Also, after filing, back & forth w/ a cheap 'sharpening stone' will give a good finish. As the old saw goes, 'one way or another'. If necessary, a bench grinder could be used. Just "Be Careful!" to hold it bare-handed so it does not get too hot.

Good information. However, I've not found it possible to get a good enough 90 degree on some laminated blades, such as the Helle, to be able to strike a Ferro rod. This is because the outer layer of metal is not hard enough to give a good spark. Also on many of my Moras I've only put the square spine on the front half of the blade because I often strangle the blade when doing finer carving work and find a sharp spine gets uncomfortable.
@JAB671

I'm not so much a 'bushcrafter' as a camper. It is cool if a knife has a 90° spine but I don't mind carrying a dedicated ferro rod striker, sometimes mounted to my sheath alongvwith a ferro rod or in the pouch on my sheath if it has one. Even those strikers that come with cheap-ass Coughlin's ferro rods aren't bad. They weigh almost nothing and they can actually also work pretty well for scraping fatwood, etc. Just a thought for those with knives that don't have a 90° spine and who maybe can't/don't want to modify it.

I might add that the knife doesn't need a 90 degree spine to use it on a ferro rod, the angle is not critical, it could be 70. Key is that the spine must be keen on one side or the other.

This is usually one of the first things I do whenever I get a new knife, if it doesn't have that spine. With the BK2, it is coated. I took the effort to make that edge on a short piece. It took some work. That's a decision/sacrifice you have to make.

I've got a story for you Dan that fits this video perfectly ! I just bought a new Opinel knife today and I LOVE it. It came razor sharp and believe it or not so was the spine. Opinels are folders made in France and I know it's not a fixed blade but it's an awesome knife. It was a little bit stiff to open at first , having tight tolerances cuz it's new so when I folded it shut I cut my finger just a bit (no blood). This knife can scrape shavings from fat wood and shower sparks from my Ferro rod (I tried it). I think that everyone should get an Opinel knife , they're super great. I'm in no way linked to the Opinel company.

I decide to see if I could go one better than a 90 degree spine and looked around for something that could grind a slight concavity into the spine of my knife. Looked at my Lansky axe puck and thought, hmmm. Carefully centered the puck on the spine and made a bunch of short passes ( don’t need much, 3/4- 1” is plenty. Worked a treat.

I don’t use the spine as much as some, though I still do. And get a 90 degree on them. Incase I need it, as I normally just use a bic and some tinder/kindling that I eother find and process or make and bring with. I always have high end fire starter that I make and bring with me, think of almost solidified napalm, without the aluminum shavings, I just go heavy on wax. Add petroleum jelly and ivory soap shavings, otherwise very little gas added to the mix, some kerosene and diesel, some naphtha. Melted paraffin wax, ivory soap shavings and mix that with fluffed up cotton balls, pulled apart, oh yeah, some oil too. Usually use the bags of the tea lights you get cheap at the store as the way source, then I reset the wick and pack full of my mixture, in the same little tin, if super bad weather/wet and you need a fire now, fluff up the top of it, spread out the wick. And use matches, lighter, or strike it, it will light, and it will burn, hot. For a long time, even in a down pour. It will light any twig/branch fire, or split wood to kindling size, no matter how wet, that set up will burn for 28 minutes or so, with at least a 1-2 inch flame, have tested, it works. And the first 12-15 minutes is a good 5-9 inch tall flame an inch or so around. I grew up on the Oregon coast. And lots of times, it’s horrendous trying to get a fire going. Especially when out backpacking/hunting, way out in nowhere. And you need fore to cook on, warm up, dry out your clothes. For those who don’t know, it is wet there, the air is wet, the ground is wet, it rains. A lot. Dead wood is wet, tinder is wet, you are wet. The ferns and under brush will soak you, the fog will soak you in a half hour, in fall/winter, early spring. When out in the actual woods, not on a trail, you will be cold, wet and muddy, period. Everything else will be cold wet. And probably muddy, a good 7-9 months and y YT IH will be rained on, almost daily, for most of the day, or at least subject to wet, heavy fog. It’s classified as a temperate rainforest. So gets cold. Over 100” of rain a year, the water table, in valleys. Is at the highest point a foot below ground. That’s where and why I developed it. It’s mostly the napalm recipe, but made solid, instead of a slightly thin jelly. Without aluminum powder added if any of you want to make that, be careful, do it out doors, not on your deck, and use a double boiler, to melt the wax. Then add each ingredient below that. from the thickest to thinnest ingredient, so a little naphtha at the end, then mid in the pulled apart cotton balls. And only heat to the lowest setting needed to melt the wax, that will melt anything else, let you mix. And should be the thickness of thick oatmeal, when heated. Before the cotton is added. It takes time. But oh does it work, and if you store it/don’t use it. After 6-9 months depending on how hot you’re area is, reheat and melt, add a little more diesel, oil, kerosene and a splash of gas, naphtha, until it’s thick oatmeal consistency again, as those will slowly evaporate out. Especially in hot, dry environment. I only make small batches, mainly for emergency use, if needed, or if I’m cold/tired, wet when backpacking and can’t be bothered to make a fire the right way/weather is kinda bad, and wetter than normal. Then I’ll cut out a small piece and use it. Of not an emergency. So fast and easy to get going. If I use it. Is about a sugar cube size. Has never failed to get a fire going, no matter how wet/green of twigs and other tinder. No offense to anyone but ferro rod is way down my list of lighting a fire. I can, and do from time to time, to keep up on basics, but that’s not fun. Or coveinant to me, when I’m trying to backpack and enjoy my time out there. The ok boy thing below a ferro rod, is bow drill, or other pre Iron Age methods. Though I also have a striker and some flint/chert, just to try. And occasionally use, for fun, and light training. So by all means, learn, practice and use the much harder ways. Enough so you can do it, but I also use modern tools/materials, that are a little older, repeatable, effective. Just like I ensure my lives have a sharp spine. Of more or less 90 degrees to use. If I need it. Never hurts having a tool to use, and basic knowledge, experience to actually use it. Of nothing else, is a cool trick to show your buddies, or it could save your life. Sure my method is cheating, but if you made it. Have it, and need it, it will save your life. Or if you want it, it will make your life far easier, but you could easily strike it. With a ferro rod, if you had a 90 degree spine, lol. And your lighter was wet, or out of fuel, or got broken. Just cause I “cheat” according to some, doesn’t mean I can’t, or won’t do other methods. Bow drills suck, haha, at least to me. Hand drills are way, way worse. Have done, 10/10 won’t recommend, personally, unless training/not other option. But today, with our tech, surplus of knowledge, time, goods, if you’re resorting to a bow/hand drill…we are in bad times friend. And wish you luck in staying alive.

To me, a sharp 90 spine is a good thing on a utility/camping knife, not such a good thing on a kitchen chef's knife. A couple of years ago I bought a cheap chef's knife just to have one to abuse...I mean when I was doing something I didn't necessarily want to use my "good" hand made Japanese chef's knife on... It was so dull as-manufactured I was working so hard with it my finger started to bleed - the spine was that sharp. I joked I might have been better off flipping it over... I have since sharpened it (a lot, like once a month or so, it doesn't hold an edge), and intentionally dulled the spine. Now, my LionSteel and ESEE knives...that's a different story and completely different use case.

If your knife is too hard to file it, just switch to a cheap diamond sharpener, a lot of them are cheaper than a good stone. Not only coated knives aren't worth trying, knives from laminated steel too - their sides are pretty mild, unable to strike ferrorods (fatwood probably yes). My most expensive bushcraft knife is a Mora Companion HD stainless for 20€ and comes without a 90° spine, their Bushcraft Black (with 90° spine) is twice that much - for me a no-brainer to put some ellbow grease to the Mora Companion.

Word of warning, [striking or scraping with the back of a non locking folding knife] in England a full bladed knife or one with a locking blade is illegal to carry as EDC, so some keep a small non locking knife in their pocket or pouch. [Which is legal to carry around] Some of these folding knives are really good carvers and quite good for bushcraft so The temptation to grab the folding knife instead of your main knife because it is close to hand is high, The problem is if you use the back of blade to scrape or strike, the knife can fold up and close as you apply pressure and cuts your hand. [you need to remember to close the knife up before you scrape or strike with the back of the blade]

Sympathy, my friend. It’s unfortunate and a special level of government intrusion into individual freedom that a once great empire has been stripped of handguns and locking blades. The sick part of that removal of freedom is that it’s always done by ‘us’ / our ‘representatives.’ We allow a vocal minority to shame us, guilt us, and shout us down with their “this is for your own good; this will make everyone safer” BS. Exhibit A: after years of that horse shit, today you actually have to be concerned about not slicing your finger should you decide to put pressure on the spine of your knife. When freedom is gone, it’s gone, and it’s never coming back. 😢

This was the first time they had used the Ray Mears special edition knife and he has built a reputation for only putting his name to quality products. We all struggled to use the back of the knife on a ferro rod during the course. I had a standard version of the knife with me which worked fine. During the ‘test’ at the end we had to set a fire using the knife and ferro rod. The instructors were getting quite frustrated that no one could perform this basic task, so I struck a spark using the point of the knife (yes I know cringe cringe). The instructor grabbed the knife and said ‘no no no you do it like this……..👎🧐😩😵‍💫 they spent the next half hour collecting all the knives and failing to get a spark🤪🤪🤪🤪🤪 they were really pissed at Mora. When I got home I just put the back/spine of the knife on a large rotating wet stone, although this technically set a very slight concave on the back/spine of the knife it actually gave me a sharper edge. Every time I see a Mora knife I smile thinking of those four instructors indignantly strutting about the camp🤪🤪🤪

Well, easy way to do it. I have done it before, on hard alloy steels, a dremel on the lowest speed and the tungsten cutting bit, going slow. Using cutting oil on the bit, along with cooling the blade in a jar of cutting oil, goes surprisingly fast. And doesn’t take out the temper, when done right. But you should never throw away any knife that isn’t completely broken into small pieces and functionally useless, as any metal blades knife, will be worth its weight in gold. One day, after modern society goes away. Or I’d not our lifetimes, can at least be given to goodwill, or local charity like that. Or sold at a yard sale. Helping else. Knowledge os great, and king in many ways. Situations, but try to replicate a steel knife or pot, let alone the modern alloys in the field. All but a few will fail from having to find the raw resources. To processing them, into useable material, then actually making what you need, as you’d have to use each step and amount of what you got, to make the tools. So you could make the next set of tools. To make the thing, at the end. I know how to do it. Have done small bits and pieces of each, step. But never fully from beginning to end, and with my experience and area, I’d be stuck with iron, mass scale until I could make a blast furnace to make good steel, in large numbers, but I’d suffer the same down falls of the industrial revolution until about the 40’s I’d have no real sensors to help me. But I have history and knowledge. So I could the same quality/slightly better as a result. Someone in the Stone Age would’ve killed for the cheapest Chinese stainless steel butter knife. As that ground on stones to make a metal knife, that’s actually sharp, and lasts, for harvesting plants. Processing meat/game, fish, or even general camp work, would be life changing. Let alone a simple iron/cast iron pan or pot.

It's nice to have a 90 degree spine, but you can get away without it by carrying a steel striker in your kit.

You can, but it is much easier to process fatwood shavings with a 90 degree spine, at least that's why I like mine that way

Why ruin a great knife that does not have a 90 Deg spine? A ferro rod will create sparks with a granit stone, broken glass bottle etc. I carry a old hacksaw blade to do the same things that a 90 Deg spine on a knife will do.

Not a fan of sharp spines on knives. A rounded back is easier on chapped fingers and hands. Bring a scraper for all that scraping stuff.they can be super light and a scraper around your neck will go through TSA. Just saying. A scraper can be a fat wood scraper, A spark scraper, A chise! And so much more. Just think that tnrough. A knife is best used as a smooth back instead of ruining your fingers and hands, your fingers will thank you.

Thank u for the "files only cut 1 dir" I hate hearing someone playing the 🎻with a file. I prefer 2 lay file flat & PULL the back of the knife down the file.. helps me from rounding the edges
