Alternatively, start at 42 & retire at 55 after investing 60%+ of income. Having the 2008 market drop early was helpful.

Although I believe in index funds there isn't a 100% chance of anything including the market going up after 20 years. Look at the Japanese stock market (Nikkei 225 index). Still hasn't hit its 1989 peak.

No guarantee for sure. Investing involves risk. And past market returns can't predict future market returns. So, yes proceed with caution. But ... there's also a risk in working too much as well. We all have to find the right amount of risk we're willing to take on for the future we want.
