I was a seaman in the Coast Guard from 1975-1979 and we had a 44ft double ended self-righting boat this is 47ft version of that boat very impressive. Was in Sturgeon Bay at a small boat station we had a 41ft aluminum hull boat 600 horsepower we took off the top of 10-12-foot waves doing a rescue. Loved doing rescue work.

These captains are the best of the best....I have a buddy Capt. Phillips who ran a 42 footer like it was a jet ski back in the 80's out of San Pedro. Unreal what they can do with watercraft.

Takes years to qualify then certify as a Surf Coxswain. But more importantly, a great Coxswain is only as good as their crew so having a highly trained crew is just as important as having a highly trained Coxswain. The MLB 47 was designed primarily for this type of operation. It sucks for personnel transfers, boardings, or anything where the transfer platform is lower and smaller than the 47. Police officers learn to push their cruisers to the max and essentially train by driving it like they stole it. Same principle applies to CG training, CG doesn't train in perfect conditions because then when everything is worst case scenario you have crews that are now operating in conditions they are not comfortable in. When operations are easier than training scenarios the scene slows down and things become manageable. Train, maintain, operate.

Perfect example of something the Coast Guard does everyday but nobody really sees it or experiences it. Great job to Station Golden Gate for taking the time to film the surf training (surf training requires two boats so the other motor life boat was filming the training because they were standing bye for casualty control or rescue). Most local, state, and federal agencies struggle trying to tell their story. Taking the time to video activities and then insert a cool soundtrack to them is something that should be encouraged instead of just hearing about different agencies when things go wrong. That's why people like watching the environmental police shows because it gives the public an opportunity to see things they would normally never ever get to see. I wish I could go back in time and have a body worn camera or an authorized go-pro camera to document experiences that unless on video you would never believe they actually happened. It's not just about the death, destruction, or carnage but rather it's about telling your story. I am sure people would love to sit shotgun on a Coast Guard small boat engaged in a midnight pursuit of a drug smuggling vessel where you can't see 3 feet in front of your face yet you are traveling at 45 knots tracking a tiny contact on radar and their wake as you encounter it ever so often. These pursuits last hours and in the end the vessel will normally toss the drugs in order to escape. Keep making the efforts to tell your story Coast Guard. BZ
