The shortage is real. Auxiliary are sole presence at closed Coast Guard stations. They might as well convert Auxiliary back to the reserves. Instead, getting free labor from civilians to run stations.

I have never understood the forced retirement age. Many experienced people are at their best and highest knowledge level and productivity in their 60's and 70's. Let's face it, after boot camp most people in the service will never have to run 1.5 miles in 12 minutes and 51 seconds again. I'd rather have an experienced 70+ year old pilot, doctor, lawyer, engineer, electrician, plumber, boatswain's mate, navigator, etc. with decades of experience any day of the week rather than someone decades younger with little training or experience. Perhaps the USCG and other branches of the service need to consider vastly increasing the retirement ages for experienced personnel.

I am a retired MK1 graduated 3rd in my A school and was qualified as a radio watchstander and boat engineer back in the 80s. With all that training I would still hesitate a long time before going on any heavy weather rescue mission. I suggest reading 10 Hours Before Dawn and understanding just how easy it is to get put in peril. RIP Charlie Bucko and the rest of the Can Do crew.

Could you make a video about the auxiliary?
@jeffmilroy93459 ай бұрын
I can tell you some stuff. Back in the 80s there was an auxiliary member named Mike who was qualified as a radio watch-stander at station Wilmette Harbor who knew every function of that station and its rescue boat crews. He was entrusted with just about any task by the regulars and the Chief. He was sort of an exception as most Auxiliary simply piloted their own boat and enjoyed the perqs of membership. So it is sort of like you make your own reality depending on how much trust you gain and time you spend earning it.

I’m 33 years old, prior Navy (Aviation Electrician), working temp warehouse jobs (which don't promote veterans to management levels), and living with grandparents in LA. Previously, I had aspired to become a pilot. Primarily, it was Naval Aviator (with Air Force and Army Pilot as alternatives alongside even Marine and Coast Guard aviator; yes, I looked at all branches). After serving four years in the Navy as an Aviation Electrician (AE), I thought it'd have made for a great transition (since I was very much eager to fly the very same jets I worked on and take off from and land on a carrier day in and day out). But, alas, because of the Navy's current state (and some missteps I made during my enlisted time as a Sailor), it wasn't meant to be despite having earned my bachelor's degree after my enlistment. After a long real talk with a lot of Coasties online (along with family and close friends) these past few days, I've recently made up my mind to go CG. Hopefully, by late next year, I’ll ship out to Cape May for boot camp. When it comes to a brand new job specialty, I’m looking to go AET (Aircrew-Avionics Technician) since that’s the closest to my previous rating and I’d like to spend a few more years in Aviation before putting in my package for OCS-T (since I've already fulfilled the education requirements and am really looking to commission after potentially making Petty Officer 2nd Class). Great content btw, Julian. Thanks for this!

Technically the retirement age is 60, max. However that gets waived all the time for personnel in critical billets. My guess is they will make the retirement age 62 to allow them to serve 20 years. That or they will just have to apply for a waiver to extend their enlistment.
